  • Bike racer, and I love the Garmin RTL510 light - best cycling purchase!
Style: Tail Light Only Pattern Name: Tail Light
Are you a recreational cyclist, commuter or racer? Want to take your safety up a notch - this is for you and worth every penny! I am sure it was designed by cyclists at Garmin who ride a lot, and have needs just like ours. Kudos, Garmin. I'm a racer (CAT 3 Masters so nothing special), so I do a lot of training whenever and wherever I can. I'm always concerned about my safety, especially lately while I have been riding alone (solo rides due to Coronavirus). I ride on diverse roads that include highways, rural farm roads as well as surface roads in our city. Each presents different safety concerns from distracted city drivers, speedy open road cars and trucks that are angry when lycra a clad guy is on their roads. So, I need safety! So, my wife purchased this from Amazon for my birthday. I could not wait to test it out. Setup was a breeze. I charged it for a couple of hours, then mounted the bracket on my aero post - they include multiple adapters for all types of seat posts. I placed it as far down as I could so as to avoid interference from my rear wheel, but low enough so that my small seat pack does not obscure the light at all (or radar). Pairing was a breeze. I have it paired with my Garmin 530. My 530 is also paired with my iPhone and a power meter and a Wahoo HR monitor. For the light, I just went into setup, detected new sensors, and pow, it was there and all working in a few moments. I was ready to ride. I clipped in and hit the roads and in summary, this new device was amazing. It never missed a car, no matter what type of road I was riding on. It even successfully negotiated problem spots like hills and turns . Even when I was stopped at a streetlight, it would let me know cars were approaching from behind. The user experience and audio and visual notifications on my device were great, and well thought through. I have a lot going on with my Garmin, it helps me with food/fluid intake reminders, lap timers, road hazard warnings and now cars approaching - this integration was seamless and overlays every other notification screen. Well done Garmin. I was very surprised that it will mark multiple approaching cars, right on my screen. Impressive. It missed one motorcycle that was tucked in behind a car. Understandable. It also seems that cars were more aware of me vs. my standard very bright rear blinky. Perhaps it is because the light mode changes as a car approaches? Not sure, but the cars were different yesterday on my ride and I appreciated it. I was different, too. While I still looked over my shoulder when I needed to make a move that would have placed me in the lane, I did make changes to my habits. When I was alerted to an approaching car, I moved further right - as far as I safely could. Of course there is the safety benefit from moving that far to the right, but also makes me seem much more car friendly. Maybe that is why cars behaved differently. I have not done a group training ride and probably will not be able to for at least several weeks. Other reviews and several cyclists I know say it works just as well riding in a pack. I would not have purchased it if others had not said how great it is in a group, since normally, that is the bulk of my riding. Maybe in a future software release, it can detect if I am the last in the group and only blink when a car approaches if I am last in the group. I hate being blinded by the blinky lights of my riding buddies. Super annoying, but worth it. We will see what this one does in the future. I have no comment on battery life yet. Yesterday was a 4 hour ride with lots of cars. Battery was fine. I hear it last about 6 hours. Future versions I believe will get better battery life, brighter light and will be smaller. I would not hold out, though. For the price, buy it now. It is a solid performer that is just what a cyclist would want. Happy Birthday to me! Thanks, wife. :) ... show more

  • One of the best items I've ever bought for my bike
Style: Tail Light Only Pattern Name: Tail Light
Hands down, this tail light has been one of the best products I've ever bought for my bike. I tend to be a bit skeptical of products and I had my reservations at first, but after reading some reviews and watching a few videos it seemed to be a great fit for the type of riding that I do. I generally ride alone on rural roads and having the ability to know if someone is coming up behind me has been a great asset. Operation: The unit is charged with a USB cable with one power button to select between several blinking modes. I suppose it can be used as a standalone tail light, but that defeats the main benefit, which is radar. I use an Edge 810 and after a software update of my headunit, the tail light paired up without issue. There are settings in the headunit that can change the blink pattern of the light when a car is detected as well. Once the light is paired with your headunit, the screen will display the data like normal but will have an additional symbol in the upper right corner. When a car is detected, the unit will give an audible beep, and a red bar will show up on the left and right side of the display with a small dot that represents a car, if the unit detects two cars, two dots will show and so on. If the closing speed of the car is quick, the dot will move rapidly from the bottom of the screen to the top. Once the car passes, the display will change from two red bars to two green bars. If you do Strava segments, you probably know the display on the headunit will change from your "home screen" to the segment and if the RTL510 detects a car, the same red bar/dot will overlay on the segment. So you will always know if a car is approaching you. I've found the light will detect a car with enough distance and advance warning to allow you to maneuver as needed. It's accuracy has been 100%. The RTL510 will detect motorcycles as well. Pacelines - During a recent event which occured on a closed track, I was in a paceline and the riders behind me were not picked up on radar. However, I did notice that if a faster rider was coming around us, it would pick them up on radar. Installation: The tail light comes with a single quarter turn mount for use with either a round or aero seat post. I have an aero seat post and the fit is terrific. I'm a big fan of Garmin mounts and I purchased an additional mount for my other bike, it makes it so easy to switch between bikes. Miscellaneous: This tail light is bright even in daytime and with the various strobe patterns and burst modes, I don't see how you can't be seen. It's a premium tail light, so it should be expected to be bright. Cons: As far as I know, this light is only compatible with Garmin devices (a full list is available from Garmin's website). Buying this taillight is making a pretty large investment into the brand and Garmin headunits have caused frustrations with users in the past (myself included), so do your homework on the headunits before buying this tail light. - EDIT 8/28/19 - Wahoo announced support for ANT+ and RADAR on 8/27/19, there are several youtube videos showing the operation of the RTL510 with the Wahoo head units. This is a great addition for Wahoo users. Closing thoughts: As a tail light it's impressive, but not a standout, having the radar capability makes it standout from the crowd. It's one of those things that after taking a few rides with it, I find I don't want to ride without it. If you're already a Garmin user with a compatible device, it's terrific. If you're just getting started or thinking about switching from another platform, I'd make sure Garmin is where you want to go before buying the RTL510. To use an analogy, Garmin headunits are like a sundae, the RTL510 is like the cherry on top. EDIT 8/28/19 - no need to debate platforms (Wahoo/Garmin) anymore! ... show more
