  • An incredible watch but.....
Style: Smartwatch
After using several iterations of the Apple Watch, I decided to make a change. The change was not because I was displeased with the Apple Watch- I do think the Apple Watch, if you have an iPhone, is a great piece of tech. However, superficially, I just love the way the Garmin looks, specifically, the Tactix Delta, as well as I wanted something a bit more durable. As a disclaimer- I make a few comparisons to the Apple Watch- I of course am aware that the Apple Watch will have a huge advantage in terms of integration with an iPhone because Apple makes both, makes the software for both, etc.... The Garmin seems to be the "undisputed" champ when it comes to distance running, marathons/marathon training, backpacking, etc, with its ability to track splits, and various data on the run. Additionally, the battery life is incredible. I don't use many notifications, but i do track fitness data and I easily get several weeks on one charge, if not longer. The GPS tracking has worked very well for runs/walks. I have not had a chance to get it out on any trails yet. It does track some really nice data that you can review in Garmin Connect app on your phone. One downside is that you have to have the Garmin Connect software running on your phone to track data. If it's not running, it will sync with the watch the next time you open it. Not a huge deal, but of course not as straightforward and streamlined as Apple. If you do not care about the Tactix looks/don't need the few specific features it comes with, the Fenix 6 would likely be a better option (the current model at the time of this review) and potentially save a few dollars. I will say the Tactix Delta only comes in the size of the Fenix 6x (the largest watch face size) which is much larger than even the 44mm Apple Watch. I was concerned it would be too large, but I actually very much like the size. I am not a big person- 5'10"... so i don't have particularly long arms/big wrists. But after a day or so I got used to it and do not in any way think it looks too big. I just wish Garmin and Apple could connect to create the ultimate watch- the durability and looks of the Garmin (which admittedly is more personal preference than anything) with the software/phone connectedness of the Apple Watch. Perhaps a future iteration! Over all, if you don't need all the notifications or the great screen of the Apple Watch, or are looking for something built more for outdoors/activities/adventure (not saying the Apple Watch can't do that- it does it well, and is getting better with new WatchOS releases... its just the watch itself in my experience has always been a bit more fragile), then the Garmin would be a great option for you. Or, of course, if you are an Android user, I think the Garmin would really be a great piece of tech to have if you like some notifications on your wrist that syncs well with your phone. Just my two cents for a very "average" user... I am not a marathon runner/backpacking through the swiss Alps... just enjoy fitness, being active, and trying new technology. ... show more

  • Its more of a tool than a smartwatch, perfect for me and I love it.
Style: Smartwatch
I wanted to get some use out of this before submitting my review. I’ve had this watch for a little over a year now. I do field surveying for a Telephone Company. Part of my job is locating and identifying utility poles and getting GPS coordinates for them. I’ve used a handled unit for years, but as I got older, trying to carry survey stakes, rangefinder, hammer, clipboard, water bottle and other items became too much even using a backpack. I decided I wanted a GPS watch to free up a hand. I was looking at smartwatches, and my son has a Samsung, and my wife has an Apple. One day I tried both and compared them to my handheld’s readings. I work in the remote areas of West Virginia, where there is very little Cell service. I learned without Cellular, the smartwatches are no better than my Galaxy Note 8. It gets close, but within a hundred feet or more “close”. Just not close enough. Then I came across the Garmin. I’ve used Garmin handhelds for years, but the price seemed crazy for a watch. I tried it anyway, and here is what I’ve learned a year later: This thing is not a smartwatch. It is a tool and that is it. If you use it as a tool, you’re going to love it. If you want a smartwatch with a bright screen to send messages, make calls, and read emails, you’re going to hate it. The display is awful (dull, bland) compared to my son’s galaxy and wife’s apple watches, and the control buttons are not very intuitive. It takes a while to get used to the controls (not a touch screen). But the GPS is much more accurate. This Garmin watch is within 5-10’ of my handheld GPS 64. Not bad for being a watch. The other thing I love about it is all the features I can use while outdoors. The topo map is not hard to read, the compass works pretty good, the altimeter seems accurate and all the body functions it tracks is a bonus feature I didn’t think I would use. (heartrate, O2 saturation, respiration, calories burned,) and has in way made me more active since I can now track my progess. I wear this thing when I kayak, mountain bike and hike, and can track many different stats. You can even customize the widgets for each activity to reflect whatever you want to track/record. (elevation, time, heartrate, elevation ascended, elevation descended, top speed, average speed, and many more). For working, tracking/recording your path, getting GPS coordinates and exercising outside of cell range, the Garmin blows away the Apple and Galaxy smartwatches. If you’re a city or suburban warrior, and just want an extension of your smartphone that you can wear on your wrist, then skip the Garmin, you’re going to be disappointed. ... show more

  • Betting on Garmin in case of an Emergency
Style: Smartwatch
I did a lot of research before I made this purchase. I bought it for my son who just commissioned as an Infantry Lt in the US Army so I wanted him to have a reliable trusted piece of equipment. This specific watch kept coming back to forefront during the extensive research. Garmin don't let me down, myself son's life may depend on you. ... show more

  • Great Rugged Watch
Style: Smartwatch
I've owned and used the Garmin Instinct Tactical for about two years. I got interested in the Tactix Delta as an upgrade. Overall its a great watch! When I first put the watch on I couldn't help but complain about the size. I do have small wrists. However, after wearing it for a few hours I started to not notice the size as much and really liked the way it looks. Its a great looking watch. Now for function! It should be noted I am an active law enforcement officer and the Tactix Delta does what it is advertised to do and holds up really well. I haven't abused it to much at the time of this review. I have gotten it completely submerged in water and covered in mud. The fitness tracking is fairly accurate and pairs well with the Garmin Connect app. The GPS is great, fast and accurate navigating the map can be a little slow as it is not a touch screen and operates by using the side buttons, but its not as bad as you would think. Overall its a great rugged watch with plenty of tools like GPS, fitness / health tracking, can receive notifications. When I purchased the Tactix Delta it was about half the original price, as it has been out for a few years. I'm not sure if i would have bought it otherwise. The price is a little steep, however if you have an active lifestyle and need a good rugged watch, that has GPS independent of you phone its worth it. Stay Safe! ... show more
