  • Really wanted to love this watch but hard too.
UPDATE ON WATCH #2: The second watch after a couple weeks of use seems to keep excellent time compared to the first watch! Functioned perfectly for the first week and connected very quickly to the GPS satellites. The watch now seems to freeze every time the alarm and I cannot snooze or shut the alarm off, it just freezes the watch while alarming. Also seems to freeze when I switch profiles and the only way to fix wither of these two problems is to push and hold the power/lighting button (top left) for about 15 seconds and this forces the watch to shut down. After a few minutes I can restart the watch and all seems to work until the next alarm or profile change, very disappointing. I really wanted this great looking and great fitting watch to work. This is now the third Garmin Fenix I have had and I have decided to go back to Suunto, thought I could save a few bucks on the Garmin but not worth my sanity or reliable watch. Oh well The Good: Watch looks great and fits really well, I love the size and shape it fits my wrist really well! Charging cable and clamp seem like quality and lock onto the watch nicely. Battery life seems to be pretty decent thus far and the screen while low resolution is very easy to read and you have options on how to set it up. I really love the time zone screen, able to add several different time zones. The alarm has audible and vibrate features and this is AWESOME, really awesome feature. The Bad: Being a watch (timepiece) I expect it to keep accurate time, FAIL Garmin! About every day or two this watch will gain about three to five hours! I had a hard time believing it to be honest, this is a very simple thing! I have used $10 watches that kept better time its insane that Garmin cant get this to keep proper time (without constant satellite connection). Of course there is no option to manually set the time, SO I have to connect to a satellite (several minutes outside) to get accurate time again. This is a real problem when it does this overnight as I miss my alarm for work. More Bad: Moving from different screens in the watch is really slow, it's got to load (and yes i have the most current firmware update). Outside of gaining five or so hours every couple days the watch also just switches time by several hours daily and if I hit any button and come back to my main time screen it's corrected itself (annoying). Still More Bad: New out of the box my return button wasn't working and if I jam it in REALLY HARD it sometimes works. This makes the task of setting the watch really time consuming and frustrating. Waiting for a replacement so I can return this one and hopefully the new one works as designed (tells accurate time at least!) As mentioned the satellites are a bit slow but that's not super critical for me, sadly I need them to keep this thing accurate in time. (fail Garmin). Overall I really love the looks and features of the watch, but am in disbelief that it doesn't have an option to set true manual time and cant maintain accurate time. I had thought of maybe the Fenix 3 but after reading all the bad reviews and hearing about more button issues I wouldn't pay the asking price. I have a Suunto Core that's been on my wrist for about eight years and still works PERFECTLY! I sent it in recently to get a new case for purely cosmetic reasons and thought this would be a good well priced watch to tide me over while my Sunnto was in the shop. I had nothing but great experience with Garmin products in the past but this is really a fail, after all the reviews and interacting with the Garmin customer service I would expect much more. I wont likely be buying anything else form Garmin in the future unless they really come through on watch number two and get some better quality control going. Suunto has never given me any issues at all, hard to beat that. Maybe the Suunto Traverse is my next watch? I will update this when watch number two arrives and see hoe that one works. ... show more

  • Watch it!
I bought this watch in November of 2016. The tech in this watch is not state of the art today. The Garmin Fenix 3 is the newest in the Fenix line, and it is a far far more evolved piece of technology. The Garmin Fenix 3 costs around 400$ new. I bought the original Garmin Fenix for under 100$ factory refurbished. Were I to compare the Fenix to the Fenix 3, I would probably rate the Fenix with a single star. I am not rating it based on the Fenix 3 tho, I am rating it on it's own merits, of which there are many. I loaded a gpx containing the entire Oregon portion of the PCT....it works great! There is no proper map with the Fnix. Instead it draws the path you want to follow. As long as you keep the nav pointer on the path, you are where you want to be. My primary purpose in buying this is to navigate the PCT during the winter. Last year I got lost around Mt McGloughlin because fresh snow had covered all the paths and there are all kinds of trails out there so the canopy was no help. I wasted about 4 hours, and at the end of the week when I had finally reached Crater Lake, I realized that I wasn't going to have time to walk the rim :( With the simple GPS "map" (track?) display I won't be getting lost this year. Yeah, youi can use your cellphone for this purpose, and the display you'd get would have infinitely more info. The problems I have had there are that wet, cold days are not friendly to precision touchscreen swiping, and it takes a lot of power to keep a cellphone with GPS running for a week or two in the winter weather. In the summer a little solar panel is enough to keep the phone going indefinitely.... in the winter its the Garmin Fenix and a 50k mah battery pack.... Very happy with this purchase. In a couple years when the price drops I will upgrade to the Garmin 3 while everyone else is using the Garmin 4 or 5....... In my opinion it pays off to lag a little behind this kind of tech. ... show more

I bought this watch for a big trip to bag 14ers in Colorado, along with the prep hikes leading up to it, and I think it was a great choice. I love the features and usability of the watch. One of the main features I was after was the altimeter, which seems to provide accurate and consistent results for changes in elevation. I currently have the auto calibration for the altimeter set to "just at the start", but I'd like to experiment with options, including manual calibration, to improve the overall accuracy of the altimeter. While the smart phone integration was not the main feature I was looking for, the iPhone notifications over Bluetooth are a nice addition. Upload and sync with the Garmin software has been a piece of cake. I'll need to see how it works out for management of tracks, routes, and waypoints over time, as I use the watch more. My only issues with the watch so far have been: a) pretty much 1 day battery life is all you get with heavy GPS usage b) When I had to wear rain gear while hiking, it tended to hit the buttons on the watch and do things like turn off the GPS. There may be a lock feature that I need to learn to use. Based on my experience with this factory refurb Fenix, I am seriously looking at the latest Garmin watches as an alternative to the apple Watch. ... show more
