  • Coming from Apple Watch Series 2
Love this watch. I have to admit, when I first bought it – the first week or so was tough. You're getting used to a completely different app experience, and being that Apple is a top of the line smartwatch – I felt like the Garmin was "missing" some things that I had become accustomed to, namely, Siri and some of the SmartHome features. The ability to text from my wrist was really never a driver for me, but being able to set a reminder ... tell Siri to turn on or off the lights, start a timer, etc., was very convenient. I will say though, that this watch from a "smart" experience does more than what is readily advertised, which it can "clear" notifications from the watch, and it will also clear them on your phone. You can also read more than just a few lines, like the FitBit. Before making this purchase, I had spent a lot of time reading, researching, watching review videos etc. on the differences and strengths between the two watches, and the things that continued to come up were that AW was a superior smartwatch, and Garmin was a superior tracker/fitness/outdoor watch. This is all true. I've owned FitBit flex, Charge HR, Charge 2, AWS2, and now this – and what has won me over, has been the battery life, the all-day heart rate monitoring (and more accurate features and tracking, like that of resting heart rate which AW claims to do, but really just picks the lowest value it's recorded - typically during sleep, which sleeping heart rate is different than overall resting heart rate), the ease of use, and use of buttons instead of touch screen, and the overall aesthetics. Has been my favorite "watch" of any kind that I've had in the last 5+ years. The app experience isn't bad at all in my opinion as some have pointed out – and there's a treasure trove of data as well as options in the desktop version – such as customized and suggested workouts for various goals whether it be your first 5K or a competitive marathon. To that point – I am not a competitive marathon runner, but do work out 5-6 times a week, and am someone who wanted to more accurately track their overall fitness and cardiovascular/heart health, as well as get into some of the races, but safely. Making the initial investment stung, but after the first week, I couldn't be happier. I also purchased the Garmin brown leather band to help dress it up for the office, and it looks great. This was my first review on Amazon – but after all the time I spent agonizing about whether or not to get this watch, and then the added time I spent deciding whether or not the AW was a better fit for me – I felt compelled to write this for anyone else who might be in the same place. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the next few years, because AW is definitely getting better and adding more functionality in the fitness realm and I think will continue to do so, but Garmin has led this category for a long time and AW has a ways to go before they can compete head to head with Garmin in fitness, in my opinion. ... show more

  • Reviewing after 14 months of daily use
I purchased the Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire in July 2019. Since then I have worn it every day, usually 24/7. I have it paired with my iPhone 11 Max Pro, using iOS 13 and 14 and synching my data and workouts to the Garmin Connect app. I also use the Garmin Triathlon Heart Rate Monitor (paired to my Fenix 5) for more accurate data and several additional feedback metrics on my runs and bike rides. It also automatically uploads to Strava. It does NOT download from or upload to Peloton (unfortunately). I have the Fenix 5 setup to receive notifications from my iPhone (texts, emails, calls, etc.) I was surprised to discover it functions as a smart watch as well. I give the Fenix 5 Sapphire 5/5 stars. I would recommend it to any athlete looking improve performance and motivation. It took some getting used to. It is a little complex, and therefore, complicated, but the continued use provided me the practice needed to replace anxiety with confidence. I now use it without even thinking about the steps to record/measure my workouts and data. My Fenix 5 Sapphire helped me train for my first half and full marathons. It helped me better understand my training gaps and how and when to increase/decrease effort for overall gains. I bought my wife the Fenix 6 a few months ago. While updates and improvements are noticeable in her 6, they are not enough for me to spend $600. My 5 still works nicely. I suspect I will use my 5 daily for 3-4 years before updating to a 6 or 7. The Fenix 5 Sapphire is comfortable. The face is a bit bulkier than I'd like. It sometimes catches on edges of surfaces, etc. But the battery life is amazing--so it's a tradeoff I am willing to make. I have showered and swam with it on a few occasions with no issues. If you are in the market for a serious fitness tracker, but don't want to spend the money on the absolute latest model--the Fenix 5 Sapphire is a steal for around $350. ... show more
