Description

Not only can you coordinate you GBA with your hair color (it comes in arctic, glacier, indigo and fuchsia) but you can be king of game mountain. Portable gaming entered a new era when the Game Boy Advance was released. This is not your older brother's Game Boy; the Advance has some powerful new enhancements. The screen is bigger, better to see 32-bit graphics. In fact, it delivers a sharper picture than some current TV-based consoles. You'll also see 10 times more colors than the Game Boy Color can display. The Game Boy Advance runs 17 times faster than its predecessor, allowing a range of game features such as scaling, rotating and transparency effects. New left and right buttons give you-and game designers-more options. The Game Boy platform (which includes the original unit, the Game Boy Pocket, and the Game Boy Color) came to market when most video game consoles had a life expectancy of just a few years. More than a decade later, the system is still going strong. How did the Game Boy successfully compete-- and in some cases bury--an onslaught of faster, more powerful handheld and home console systems? Let us count the ways: affordability, a huge library of games that consistently made the most of the hardware's limitations, smart power management that extended battery life, and uncluttered controls. But perhaps it was the system's ultraportable design that allowed devotees to play video games around their schedule, making it the must-have system for kids and adults alike. Now the Game Boy Advance (or GBA as people are already calling it) comes to us with power that would have been unthinkable back in the day. The portable's 32-bit RISC CPU runs circles around the former's 8-bit workhorse, allowing it to process program instructions much faster. What that means to everyday gamers is more intricate visuals, more simultaneous movement on the screen, and better sound. In fact, the often-annoying beeps and boops of old-school Game Boy titles are being replaced with digitized stereo sound. The extra processing muscle also means you can even network up to four Game Boy Advance units together, via the communication cable, for multiplayer fun off of one shared cartridge. Only two Game Boy Color units could link together, and each unit had to have its own copy of the game. What's not being replaced, however, is the wide selection of Game Boy games. Because the Game Boy Advance system is backward-compatible, it will play its own line of colorful games--including such launch titles as Super Mario Advance, F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, Army Men Advance, High Heat Major League Baseball 2002, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2--as well as all of the monochrome and color games that have already been released for the previous Game Boy systems (nearly 500 in total). Players can view the older games in their smaller, originally square dimensions, or, with the touch of the shoulder button, expand the game to fit the GBA's larger screen. We tried enlarging the screen on a Game Boy Color edition of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and found that Mr. Hawk was much easier to see. When you first pick up the system, you'll be amazed at how lightweight it is. At fewer than 5 ounces and a little larger than a deck of playing cards, the system easily fits into a shirt pocket without any sag. The GBA's wider shape fits better into a wider range of hands. The former design too often pushed the left and right thumb knuckles together during gameplay. The new layout should be comfortable for all ages, and the center screen orientation makes it easy to see. Game Boy Color owners will find the GBA's larger screen somewhat darker than they're used to, but that's because the screen is outfitted with antiglare technology. Like the old Game Boy Color, the color LCD is not backlit, so you need pretty good light to play by. Unlike that system, though, you won't be craning your neck and tilting the unit to see around the hot-spot reflection of the light bulb in your screen. But you'll also notice the graphics. Sporting what's basically a redesigned SNES technology, you'll see things on the GBA that the big consoles do, such as scaling (making objects larger or smaller) and rotation effects--technological advances that will affect the look of everything from crossing a finish line to throwing a touchdown pass to crawling through a dungeon. Some might argue that Nintendo could have tried to put even more power into this Game Boy Advance. After all, the 32-bit video game had its heyday more than five years ago. Perhaps, but after handling this new handheld, we're inclined to think that Nintendo wisely struck a balance between size, price, and power consumption. And considering how well the old 8-bit system weathered the decade's technological storms, we think the Game Boy Advance is here to stay, and we're glad. --Porter B. • Works great. Much appreciated!
The GBA console arrived on time and in the condition described by the seller. It was shipped inside a bubble-wrap envelope via USPS. There are some light to medium scratches in the screen which is a minor inconvenience, but not too distracting. The rest of the console body is in good condition. Color & sound works great and it included the battery cover. Overall, I'm very satisfied. My 5 year old son and I have been playing this for the past few hours with no problems. Thank you seller! ... show more

  • Worked/Works Flawlessly
I had 1 game of 3 that didn't work on it and I went to the post one mourning and sent the faulty game back to whichever gaming place I bought it from in Minnesota (it was Pokemon Silver) never got money back for the game. Somehow it was still satisfying getting rid of it that way even though it cost $5 to ship that we didn't really have in our budget. The SYSTEM COULD NOT WORK ANY BETTER!!!! ... show more

  • Resistance is Futile
Thats a great frase for the GameboyAdvance. You probably already know this baby let's you play any Gameboy game, and has a widescreen format. IF you play an old game, the GBA let's you stretch the image to fit the whole screen, or leav it the way it was. And that well, there isn't any other choice if you want a portable videogame system. You might hear some complaints about the darkness of the screen, and I must say that with the first batch of gameboy advance games that was a fact, but the newer titles coming out for the system have aparently fixed this. It will have conectivty with the NINTENDO GAMECUBE, which will be released Nov 18, but don't expect conectivity stuff this year. I do know that there will be some neat tricks next year though, one of them Involving Sonic Advance and another one Kirby's Tilt N Tumble. both great games. Take this guy anywhere, since there is no teritorial lockout, and with the GBA link cable 4 persons can play, sometimes using a single cart. ... show more

  • Works great, a little more wear than described
Ordered a GBA, great deal for the price. It works perfectly with no sticking buttons or faulty anything, and my brother in law is very happy! I have to say though, there were a few more cosmetic defects than the description or picture indicated. It warned of some scratches and wear, I expected that, it wasn't too bad. You can see the screen just fine, the yellowing is minor, the buttons don't jiggle. But the right trigger has an obvious grind line from a knife or something- seems to be a dirty fix for a sticking trigger. In addition, someone must of spilled Coke or something on it in the past, as there's little dried droplets of something dark splattered on the inside. I also wish the thing had gotten a more thorough exterior cleaning with a qtip or whatever- the edges/cracks/corners had some sort of thin rusty colored gunk up in there. Overall though, it works really great, and the amount of abuse it went through is pretty much what my own GBA experienced as a kid. I tested a bunch of old games; loads up fine, very nostalgic to play them again. Shipping was prompt and it was well protected. 4/5 ... show more

  • Gameboy Advance
I love the Game Boy Advance, mostly for its games, but the system itself has held up well over time. It is just as much fun to play games on it today as it was when it first came out. I bought a second one in order to use the link system for the Megaman Battle Network games. Without having two Game Boy Advance systems and each of the games you can't get 100% completion and seeing as how I don't know anyone else with a Game Boy Advance this was the best option. The one I received does have minor scratches, which I expected from the description, but it works great. ... show more

  • Nearly better gameplay than my Nintendo DS Lite.
I love nearly everything about the Gameboy. The structure of the system feels sturdier than my Nintendo DS. My favorite game so far is Metroid Zero Mission. Even when it's missing two buttons compared to the controller for Super Metroid on the SNES, Nintendo still managed to make the feel of the game fluid and technique building. The only thing I didn't enjoy finding out was that the rechargeable battery lasts for about two minutes when fully charged before turning red. It is my belief that this is likely caused by the fact that the charger and rechargeable batteries are to old and have worn out, so it's really not the sellers fault. ... show more

  • Great condition and fast shipping!
The Game Boy Advanced Glacier arrived today four days ahead of expected date, which was a great surprise. I tested the GB with a few old and new games and also hooked it up to a Game Cube, it worked flawlessly. The scratches and marks on the screen were also a lot less noticeable then when I expected, I didn't even see them when the game was on. The only slight issue was the back would fall off easily, but the way most people hold Gameboys it will easily stay in place. Over all it was in great condition and arrived ahead of time, I would order from this seller again. ... show more
