  • Working Great So Far! Working Great So Far!
I bought this owl to scare the birds away from my new deck. My neighbor likes to feed the birds and my new deck was becoming the new bird bathroom. I read a lot of the reviews and I decided to buy a 2x2x8 pressure treated pole and some bungy cords. The pole fit into the hole on the bottom no problem. Next I bought some modeling clay. when I put the plastic fin on the back of the head, the resting position for the head was looking over the owl's back. I did not like that. I put the modeling clay under the chin in small amounts until the head came to rest facing to the owl's front. Day one, I put the owl on the pole and strapped the pole to the deck railing with the bungy cords. The owl looked great and the birds stayed away. There is always a breeze in my back yard and the owl's head was constantly turning back and forth like it was surveying the area. On day two, I moved the owl to a different place on the railing and then a huge thunderstorm rolled in. High winds and torrential downpour and the owl remained in place. The heavier winds turned the Owl on the pole and the head was spinning 360 degrees but the owl remained on the pole. Now it has been a week and still no birds. We have named the owl Oliver. I bring him in at night and in the morning I put him in different location on the Deck. Only once did a bird come to the deck railing. I think I had moved Oliver too far away from my neighbor's side of the deck. After one week, I would recommend using this owl. ... show more

  • I like this owl! I call him Mr. Woo!
My NYC balcony was bombarded with pigeons until I finally put on some scare tape around the balustrade. Well, that cut the pigeons 95% but the one stray, brave pigeon would still land so I bought this owl and between the tape and the owl, it seems like the pigeons are keeping away. I must say, I like the owl! The head moves but only if there's a really stiff wind but lucky me, my high rise balcony gets pretty windy. I can't help looking to check if it's head has moved or toppled over and so far so good. The head turns and he looks so cute! I've grown quite attached to him and even gave him a name. He's Mr. Woo! ... show more

  • This has been working every blueberry season since 2019, This has been working every blueberry season since 2019,
I was very skeptical that this would work when I bought it in 2019. I caged my blueberry bushes which keeps the deer and other large critters away but for years I have been battling the birds who squeeze through the fencing and devour my precious blueberries. Even covering the entire cage in bird netting didn't help. The birds simply picked at it until they made a hole to enter and exit through. I decided to try the swivel headed owl hoping that it might at least lessen the damage being done. WOW! Was I surprised! This thing not only kept some birds away - it kept them all away for the entire blueberry season! I mounted two dowel rods, one on each side of my fencing and everyday I would move the owl from one rod to the other so that the birds wouldn't get used to it being in one stationary place. (the owl has a hole in the bottom that allows you to easily drop it onto a dowel rod). The day the owl arrived, I carried it to my garden but before mounting the owl, I had to chase three birds out of my enclosure. Once the owl went up, I never again found a bird inside. My blueberry harvest was at least 3 times what I have gotten in any previous year. This owl is one of my all time favorite garden purchases!!! It does not detect motion but instead has a rotating head that will sway and bobble in the wind. The owl is lightweight plastic and could be filled with rocks or sand but I found that perching it onto a dowel rod worked great. ... show more

  • Be aware of rusting screws in the owl's head. Be aware of rusting screws in the owl's head.
I was impressed with the size of the owls, which I needed, in order to scare away the pooping menacing birds. The intricate design of the faces is quite intriguing, as is the "head in motion" feature. Once I decided exactly how I was to attach the owls to my wood railing, the rest was easy. Eric at Galashield.NY was very helpful and answered questions immediately. Now I wait and see if the menacing birds return. I am now several months after installation and have observed a problem. There were two very small screws on top of the head of the owl, which secures the head to the pivoting mechanism. These screws, after a very short time and being exposed to the elements, are rusting. The management at Galashield, when asked for stainless steel screws, simply said "No". This is a design flaw and should be corrected. Their reason was, "The screw heads must be painted black." Based on this response and the rusting of the screws, I would not buy this product again. After many weeks of discussion with Gala Trade (the vendor not the manufacturer) I have exhausted all avenues of obtaining stainless steel screws. Gala told me that the manufacturer could not send me the proper screws, but if I was so inclined, I could return the product and re-order in several weeks, when the manufacturer promised to install stainless steel screws. I declined that choice and have treated the rusting screws and re-painted them, hoping that my fix is a long-lasting one. This entire experience has been very frustrating. ... show more

  • This owl really worked to scare away the quail that had suddenly taken over my backyard fence! This owl really worked to scare away the quail that had suddenly taken over my backyard fence!
This owl really worked to scare away the quail that had suddenly taken over my backyard fence! An OWL decoy that I got at Amazon has really worked for me to scare some pesky birds away! These Galashield OWL 'Decoys' scare birds & they fly away once they see them or they might not even decide to land and perch. These can be called ScareCrows since both Crows & Owls scare smaller birds as they prey on them. At first, I tried Amazon's 3-pack of Β½ size printed OWLS decoys. I put them near where a row of QUAIL were suddenly gathering for most of every day, standing evenly spaced, just like you might have seen rows of PIDGEONS doing on telephone lines on poles along city streets. πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… πŸ¦… The QUAIL poop down below got to be annoying me to need to clean off. πŸ™„ Those didn't work at all. So, then I put just 1 of these real-sized, realistic-looking OWLS out there and then there were no QUAIL for a while. On the 3rd and 4th day, I saw 1 or 2 QUAIL standing 15' away from the OWL, maybe testing it. Ever since then, there's been no QUAIL and since I'm retired, I'm home all day long to watch. Maybe it just took a few days for the QUAIL to get tired of being worried about that OWL, so they went and found a new place to hang out. The head of this OWL is on a spring, so it wiggles even in a slight breeze so that it looks alive. SCARY! I also hung a shiny CD a little below the owl using an old shoestring, since I'd learned that a moving, shiny item could also help scare birds away & it helps draw the QUAIL's attention to the OWL. (see it in photo). The little 8" tall, printed OWLS had come with a long, 1" wide foil ribbon foil to hang with them for that same purpose. The instructions that came with the big OWL say to put gravel or sand in the bottom of it to hold it upright, but since I wanted it perched on top of my fence's thin top railing, luckily there were 2 places for me to drill 1/4" holes through on the right side that I could put a Zip Tie through to secure it to the rail. I suppose if I didn't have any Zip Ties, I could have used wire, rope or even a strong shoestring. ... show more

  • Looks Like A Toy...Birds Think It's a Toy
We put in a nice, covered patio last year and this Spring, it became a party spot for Robins. Every day I went out several times a day and used the leaf blower to blow down their would-be nests. It got tiresome so I went online to see how I could deter these animals from nesting in my patio - came across this owl decoy. I'm like ok, birds aren't dumb...they know a predator when they see one; so, I made the purchase. The decoy came to me well packaged so no issues with the seller. I followed the directions and put the decoy out and for the first day - I did not have to blow down nests! I was ecstatic. The following day - I watched a Robin "test the waters" by sitting on our fence and chirping at the owl...when they saw there was no predatory action - they went right back to constructing their condo in my patio. I tried moving the decoy several times a day. No change in nesting behavior. So back to basics - I had to build bird block screens for each of my eaves to deter the nesting activities. Note to self - taking the easy way out just doesn't pay. Returned the decoy, Amazon gave me a gift card credit - lesson learned and all is well. So if you just like the idea of a toy owl sitting in your yard – pick one of these guys up. If however, you’re looking to scare varmints or nesting birds away – try something else because this will not work. ... show more

  • Functional and fun! Functional and fun!
So happy with this decoy! Very lifelike, and I do believe it's helped keep critters away at night; no more chewed up tomatoes thank goodness. I did fill it with sand for weight, move it to a new location every few days, and I truly enjoy watching the head move in the wind (I love birds). It seems to be working at keeping the ground squirrels away (maybe even the possums and racoons too), and the birds haven't noticed it thank goodness; I think it's too far away from the bird feeder. I'll be getting a couple more for other areas of the yard. Great quality, price, size and color. A plus that there's no batteries needed. ... show more

  • Beautiful decoy that doesnt serve its purpose
We had a wood pecker problem and as it is illegal to harm them we decided to try the old owl decoy trick. This was one of the nicer looking owls so we went with him. Upon arrival he is nice looking, you can put sand in him to make him heavier but besides that there is no good way to mount him to anything. The head spins but It doesnt really catch the wind as I have never seen the head spin even on a windy day. The primary issue is the owl doesn't serve its intended purpose. The Wood Peckers don't care he is around. Birds will land on grass directly in front of his perch and squirrels will climb up to where he sits and actually push him over. Perhaps we have rather sassy critters around here? If your looking for a nice looking Owl look no further. If your wanting to scare something away keep looking. ... show more
