    • Franklin's LM 4000 Speaking Dictionary Is Exceptional For Its Time
The LM 4000 was Franklin's first speaking dictionary, based on technology of the mid to late 1980s. This is a pretty amazing device, given the technology limitations of that earlier time. The device is very sturdy and has a good monochromatic 5.25 x 1.0 inch screen. It is not pocket sized, so it is best used on a desk or some other sturdy support. The cool thing about this is that the mechanical voice that speaks the defined words sounds incredibly like the computer-generated voice of Stephen Hawking, the famed cosmologist and notable genius who has contributed greatly to our understanding of the cosmos, especially in regard to black holes. If you wonder what a black hole is, I assure you it is defined by this handy device which uses Merriam Webster's Concise Electronic Dictionary, a database that for its time was pretty comprehensive. Needless to say, it is very enjoyable to have words seemingly pronounced by the amazing Hawking. Of course, there are smaller and more advanced electronic dictionaries today, not the least of which are provided by apps that run on your very own cell phone. But this little machine is special and takes me back to an earlier time when technology was impressive, but just beginning to give us the electronic magic we routinely experience today. ... show more

THE ITEM ARRIVED LATE AND THEN WHEN I PUT THE BATTERIES IN IT....GUESS WHAT... IT DIDN'T WORK... THEN I HAD TO REQUEST A RETURN LABEL AND WOUND UP PAYING AN ADDITIONAL $9.60 TO SEND THIS JUNK BACK> NOW HE DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER TO ANSWER EMAILS!!VERY DISSATISFIED!!
