  • High quality!
It’s heavier than you’d expect and plays beautifully. Smells strongly of smoke or maybe leather first out of the packing, but in a way that adds to the charm.

  • Why Buy a Plastic Ocarina When You can Buy one that is Ceramic?
I just got this and didn't play much yet. This is my first Ocarina and my background is mostly drums and guitar. I have a couple of flutes and have not spent much time with them, but I plan to. I have seen Ocarinas for years and was always intrigued by their ray gun appearance. After looking at some of the choices on Amazon I decided on this one because of the reviews and description. It was more expensive than some, but I didn't want to get something too cheap that I may not have been happy with over time. It took a while to arrive but sooner than the initial estimate. The outer box was somewhat crushed and I was worried that it might be cracked or broken, but I was fine. They provide a protective hard-side zippered case for it that I was not expecting and have to have received. It comes with a small cloth and a nice little song book with instructions. I was able to make some clear tones with it right away and I think it will be easy to learn the fingerings with some practice. I found I could make something that sounded like a Mourning Dove call which I thought was pretty cool. It's cool to the touch and has a little weight, but that is expected with a ceramic instrument. Think I need to be careful not to drop it on a hard surface. Might be good to attach something to go around a child's neck for security. Recommended. • No complaints
Admittedly, this is my first ocarina, but here are my thoughts so far: -It has a good weight. It's definitely made of ceramic/clay as advertised. Feels sturdy, beautiful colour. -I investigated several different ocarinas on different sites, and some in some audio files, it was clear that the instrument was poorly made, resulting in an airy sound. The audio reviews for this product intrigued me, and I'm pleased to concurr with the others on this— it has a good, clear sound. Are there others on the market that sound better? Probably. But for $30, this is a steal. -Certain things in the reviews concerned me— some reported scratches or dents in the instrument, some complained of an unbearable smoky smell, and I read one review that mentioned not receiving all the items advertised in the pictures. None of these were my experience, thankfully. The instrument is in pristine condition, smells a little like a bonfire, but that is to be expected, given the creation process includes firing. I also received all of the items advertised: a book, cleaning cloth, neck strap (?), and case. In all, this arrived really quickly and I have no complaints. For a cheap instrument off amazon, this was definitely worth it, and if you're on the fence, I'd highly recommend this ocarina as a starter. ... show more

  • Excellent Instrument, Great Sound and Look, With a Very Minor Flaw
Sound: excellent rich sound. Very clear "ringing" low notes, and very pleasant high pitch notes which do not have distortion. I can produce all the notes very clearly. The range is beyond one octave. I am an amateur in music, but I can easily figure out and produce standard do re mi fa sol la to do, plus 3 very high pitched notes on top of that. The thing that is a useful feature on the ocarina is that because of the design and large holes, you can easily produce the sharp and flat notes by covering half of the hole, similar to how it can be done on the piano with the black keys. Additionally, this Ocarina design has umvery useful small holes next to two big holes, one in each side of the Ocarina. You can cover them to get sharps or flats. Basically there are no issues with the sound this Ocarina makes. It is pretty excellent. Design: No visible flaws with the design. All holes easy to cover firmly. The holes are positioned in a way that is comfortable for the fingers. The outside appearance, color, finish, are just exceptionally impressive. People I showed this "Forest Whisper" ocarina to thought it was made from some kind of dark Cherry or Mahogany wood. The appearance is pretty much indistinguishable. At least it is the case with my individual Ocarina. Extra: the Ocarina came with a nice pouch. I personally don't intend to travel with the ocarina but it should be in some kind of soft bag, or preferably a box of you take it somewhere. For me this bag is very useful because it I intend to put it away for extended period of time I wouldn't want dust settling on it, or some scratches appearing on the outside. Another accessory that I found only two weeks later is a nice necklace string to attach to the ocarina. It's nice to see that it wasn't just a string. It has nice greenish beads on it. Only small issue is that it wasn't attached and it might be tricky to attach it the right away so the tin nylon cords don't self untie and cause the instrument to fall. Small Issue: there is one minor problem I found with the instrument coating which is that when you put a mouth to it you can smell the paint or laquer that it is covered it. I think it is just the paint. It does not smell too strong, nor does it really bother me, but it is noticeable and I guess some people may not like it. The coating/paint doesn't "bleed" or smear. The instrument has been baked and dried thoroughly. It's hits the smell. I would subtract half the star from the five stars but since it is not an option I'd rather leave it at five stars. ... show more

  • Fantastic
Mine just arrived and I am blown away. I don’t have much experience with wind instruments (much more so with stringed instruments.) so, while I cannot compare it to other ocarinas, I can say that it has a beautiful sound and is easy to start playing right away. Personally, I am going to recommend ocarinas (in general, but also this brand as it is not only very reasonably priced but also well tuned) to anybody looking to start playing instruments. Part of the sound vs. price, I’m assuming, has to do with it being a fundamental heavy helmholz resonater (overtones make for a rich sound, but construction becomes very important.) Another benefit is that without a rich harmonic spread, fundamental heavy instruments almost force you to focus on technique and timing. This will, in the long run, make you a more skilled musician. Also, it comes with a nice case and sheet music/ tablature (there is a fingering guide on top of the scales for every song included with the book.) An update: I apparently forgot to press submit on the review above, so, here are some added thoughts after owning this instrument for some time. I saw a number of reviews complaining of tuning relative to a fixed reference tuning. Number one, there are two smaller holes that you can cover if you extend your middle finger, also, varying the pressure you put on the two thumb holes varies the size of the resonant cavity enough to allow for fine tuning of the notes. Breathing technique may also allow for this but my focus there is still just trying to shape the notes. Number two, this is a much older type of instrument that was invented long before scordatura, fixed tunings, and orchestras. Instead of trying to keep pace with other people, find a quiet place and bare your soul. ... show more

  • Beautiful but stinks to high heaven!
What a beautiful instrument! It's gorgeous, has lovely large holes, and the sound quality is pure heaven! But! Oh my goodness ... The smoke is horrible! I adore the sound, but I can't even play it for 15 seconds before I'm forced to stop. As a straw fire, I was expecting a bit of smokiness. But this is absolutely disgusting! It leaves me with the heavy taste of cigarette smoke in my lungs and on my lips. It lingers for the entire rest of the day and night. A blazing headache too. I tried to get used to it, but it's impossible. I was so disappointed. I thought about returning it, but I really do love that rich mellow sound, the large holes, and the comfortable cant of the mouthpiece. So I have set it out to air out. I'm going to stay away from it for several weeks before trying it again. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, I bought a pretty teal ceramic ocarina from the same company, and I am playing that one with great joy for now. Hopefully I'll be really good at this by the time my Forest Whisper ocarina is fully aired out and ready to play. ETA-- it never did lose that stink, so I ended up returning it. I hate returning things, but the seller processed my return so smoothly! I was very impressed and grateful! Great company! ... show more

  • Can be made playable
It really is a pretty gorgeous instrument. Has a nice weight to it, feels substantial for something so small. From C->G the notes were actually intimated pretty well. F came in maybe 20 cents sharper than its nearest neighbors, but could be adjusted for easily enough. Once it got to A and above though, everything was progressively more and more flat, to the point that high F was actually closer to D# than anything. So yea, not playable as is. At least mine wasn’t. I worked my way up the scale with little bits of sandpaper wrapped around various skinny round things like a narrow metal straw, a pen, and began the process of boring the corresponding ‘flat’ note holes out bit by bit until everything played in tune up and down the register of the ocarina. The left thumb hole needed quite a bit of relief, to the point that if I didn’t have such big thumbs, it would probably not work for me. But yea, after a bit of tuning and setup, it sounded great and I was tearing through Zelda songs just like I imagined when I impulse bought this thing. 4.5 stars now that I fixed the tuning issues, but 3 stars for how much work it needed, and to give people a heads up that this isn’t necessarily going to be a great bargain ‘turn-key’ instrument. I don’t know how comfortable the average bargain ocarina customer would be with subtractively modifying the hole diameters of a woodwind instrument to improve intonation and playability. ... show more

  • Struggles with high notes
I really, really want to give this ocarina a higher rating. This was my second ocarina after my first, plastic one was a lemon, and it's probably the reason I stuck with the instrument, but it definitely had its problems, too. The good: It is very comfortable in the hands, and its low notes sound just about as good as my $150 Focalink double-chambered ocarina. The finish is beautiful, and I love the wooden look. It does have a subtle smokey taste (albeit a little less than subtle when new) that I find appealing. Its case is sturdy, and the lanyard, while I don't really trust it as a necklace, has saved the instrument a drop or two as a wrist strap. The bad: The high notes. I have to really ramp up the breath pressure to hit a high C and blow out a lung to reach D. The high E and F holes are entire half steps out of tune. I thought it was just that I was new until I started playing on a better-tuned instrument then came back to this one. It's still playable with using lower pressures to play the thumb holes at their lower notes, but they end up being airy. The takeaway: would I recommend it? Eh, maybe. If you are shopping for your first ceramic, you might keep it tabbed. You'll be hard-pressed to find one so cheap that has the potential to sound so good. And I think the production on these is just sort of hit and miss, based on reviews I've seen on dedicated ocarina sites, so you may luck out and get a perfect one. You could find worse ocarinas out there, but, if you get one of these, I would try it with a tuner first. ... show more

  • Pulled Straight from a Fantasy Novel
This ocarina. THIS OCARINA. First of all, I've never held a more ergonomic ocarina. It's easy to settle into its use, and the pure, strong sound is downright addictive. It has a good weight to it, sturdy and stable, and it's almost too easy to play! Breath flows through it effortlessly, and the strong placement and shape of the holes makes settling into the notes easy even for an amateur like me. Artistically speaking, the ocarina is stunning. It has a matte finish, a far cry from the sharp gloss of your typical ceramic ocarina. There's nothing WRONG with glossy ocarinas, but the Forest Whisper brings something new to the table, with a sturdy balance of efficient, simplistic shape and a delicate flair. It's rustic but mystical. The whistling music and beautiful coloration makes it easy to believe, from afar, that the ocarina was sung from an ancient oak by some fantasy druid, and even up close, I'm struck by the fantastical imagery it evokes. The beaded necklace only adds to the charm. Once or twice. I've had the necklace come undone, so I VERY STRONGLY do not recommend letting it dangle there! That's what the pouch is for. This ocarina is heavy, and it will fall, and break, and you will cry a lot because it's so beautiful. But that's not what the necklace is for - it's to make sure if your hands slip, it doesn't fall and break and you don't cry. It's not intended to be a permanent, constant support, and it does the job it's meant to do (absorbing shock and preventing falls) very well. It's sturdy AND beautiful, and only adds to the strong fantastical aesthetic of the ocarina. The pouch is also very sturdy, with a strong but not bothersome velcro seal. The strap on the back is wide and strong, and it's never given me any trouble. It's the perfect size and shape for the ocarina, and is surprisingly lightweight (which is good, due to the ocarina's weight). I wear a lot of belt pouches, so I'm comfortable saying this is a good'un. I never have to settle for my plastic one if I want to play on the go! Overall, this is the best ocarina I own, and definitely my favorite. The Forest Whisper impresses on every front, from the effortlessly beautiful playing to the ancient, wild feel of the ocarina itself. I can't recommend it enough, for new and veteran players alike! ... show more

  • First impression: difficult to be pitch accurate.
The media could not be loaded. I just got this two days ago, so this is my initial opinion and is subject to change. For the record, I have no experience with any wind instruments, nor do I sing very often. So with the ocarina, I am finding myself having to learn the fundamentals of breathing. This is a "skill" that I lack and will be working on. My unsteady breathing and overall technique may be the root of any "flaws" that I will be mentioning below. 10/10/2020 First impression: Difficult to play. Notes inconsistent. It seems like I am blowing the same way each time, (though I very well may be the source of the inconsistency), but sometimes the notes are way off. Maybe my fingers aren't covering the holes adequately at times. After two days, I recorded myself playing the ocarina, the lowest c to g, using a tuner (for singers) to see how accurate the pitch is. Notes F and G are usually quite consistently accurate. But the low c and d fluctuate (sometimes an entire semitone off). The e is usually close. It is very, very hard to be spot on. I did not record the notes higher than this because I have not practiced those notes much, and I wouldn't want to give the instrument a bad name. I will continue practicing and looking at the tuner. If I learn of ways to get a consistently accurate pitch, I will share these ways. UPDATE 10/14 A general tip: While continuing to use a tuner as guidance, it seems, in general, if you blow with more pressure, the pitch will rise a bit, and with low pressure, the pitch will lower. This allows the player quite a bit of control with regards to pitch. ... show more
