This maul is a beast! 8lbs of splitting power. I wanted to upgrade from the old 6lb. Maul I’d been using for 20+ years and I found this one. Nice sharp splitting head with a hammer face on the opposite side. The head is bolted to the handle through the side and will probably never come loose. The handle is composite and has a really good feel to it. This maul is well worth the money. There’s no log too gnarly for this tool. My son and I have a small-time roadside firewood stand so we split a fair amount of wood. Mostly we use a hydraulic splitter, but sometimes you need a maul so if you’re looking stop now and buy this one. It’s pretty heavy, which is both a pro and a con. It’s nice to have a smaller splitter for smaller stuff, but if I could only have one it would be this one. The extra weight is nice when tackling tough wood. The handle is surprisingly well balanced and comfortable. I prefer it to my wood handles, which I was not expecting. The orange part is very grippy and handle profile is perfect in my opinion. Nice balance too considering the weight of the head on this. The head profile works great on tough pieces and came sharp enough for a maul. Fair price for what you get especially compared to other options out there. Item arrived later than anticipated but no big deal to me. Wouldn’t change a thing and highly recommend this splitting maul. ... show more

If you cut wood and need to split what you've cut like I do then you have got to get one of these !!! I have cut my own wood for use at home during the winter for 30 years. Up until 2 months ago I have always split the 8" up to 24" diameter logs (Oak, Hickory, Ash, Maple, etc) with a double sided splitting axe and could get through 95% of what I hauled back home without too much trouble (roughly 2 cords of wood minimum per season). I debated on getting a log splitter but those can get expensive and are yet another machine to maintain, let alone find space to store it. I thought I'd give this Fiskars 8 lb splitting maul a shot and WOW am I ever glad I did !!! I was a little concerned when it arrived that swinging this thing was going to wear me out as it's got a heavy head and feel to it. I'm only 5' 7" tall and 145lbs. It's quite the opposite of what I thought it was going to be like after I split 6 big 20" diameter Ash rounds and then another 10 Oak rounds about 18" in diameter. This thing -almost effortlessly- splits some of the biggest pieces of wood I've ever split with less effort than I would have exerted with my old double sided splitting axes. I wouldn't suggest trying to split Sycamore but so far there is nothing I've swung this thing at that it hasn't been able to split apart with ease. I only wish I'd bought it 5 years ago !!! Get the 8lb maul over the smaller one, you WILL NOT regret it. I've always enjoyed splitting wood and with this Fiskars 8 lb maul I still enjoy it and look forward to spending a couple hours getting these 150+lb log rounds turned into useable size logs. I'd give this 6 stars if I could. The anti-vibration handle and riveted head to the handle make this a long term no maintenance (no handle replacements needed) tool that will last for years to come. ... show more

This thing is awesome. I had to test it out immediately after getting home and Fiskars really hit the mark with it. I’ve been using a Husky brand maul for tough rounds and it crushes its way through. It works, but it’s far from ideal. The Fiskars 8lb maul, by contrast, has a more hollow grind than the other maul, and it was immediately evident in the way it blew through a few knotty test rounds right out of the box. It cost less than a third of what I paid for my fancy splitting axe, which I am also quite fond of, I consider it money well spent. ... show more

8 pound maul. Splits wood very well. I’ve owned several mauls in the past. This maul is by far the best due to the weight and design of the splitting head. Glass fiber handles cushions shock from impact.

I've heard for a long time this is one of the best solutions for splitting wood. I finally pulled the trigger on this when I needed a second maul to supplement my existing maul. It works well and doe the job but it isn't as awesome as everyone made it out to be. It's not anymore affective than my smaller, lighter Stihl maul. I was really hoping this did a better job on knotty wood that sometimes cause multiple strokes on the stihl. But even with this one, not much better if at all. All of that and this one is much, much heavier. I could use my stihl for 2-3 hours of splitting. This one is a freaking workout with the 8 pounds. If I get an hour of splitting done with this, I definitely feel it the next day. It works but this is not the holy grail of splitters some people make it out to be. ... show more

The 8 lb head hits hard and the IsoCore handle really cuts down on the sting in my wrists. It is heavier than I expected though. After an hour my shoulders feel it.
