I had two large old growth trees taken down and ended up with huge piles of wood that needed to be cut and split. The trusty old axe I had didn’t cut it and made chopping that quantity of green wood miserable. So I tried to find something with more power. This is extremely solid, heavy and packs powerful strikes. Pair this with a quality wedge and the wood is splitting much easier. I bought this to replace an older maul. I cannot believe the difference. This thing is heavy for sure so you gotta have the strength to swing it, but it splits green wood on the first strike. Very durable and balanced. I recommend.

Used to split some leftover logs (18" long, up to 16" diam) from some trees I had taken down. I'd been trying to split some of the smaller ones with a hatchet; bury blade in log, pick up log/blade and turn over, then slam back down til log splits. This worked for logs up to about 12" diam, but even then was tedious. So I decided to get this thing. Wow! It doesn't just split logs, it EXPLODES them. I got the 8 lb. version, in retrospect, the 6 lb. would be fine for my use and easier to handle. The 8 lb. unit requires significant upper body strength to use safely and effectively. I'm 6'2", 210#, work out regularly and still found it challenging at times. ... show more

I purchased this at full price and providing my own personal opinion: I had an old splitting maul that I was concerned that the head might not be as secure after years of abuse. I saw this and initially thought about the 8lb head. I chose to to go with the 6lb head to try first and I am so glad I did. It still has a very quality and weighted feel to it but isn't obnoxious to handle. As far a splitting, I did a few test runs on wood that had knots and was not ideal and it felt like I was wielding Thor's hammer! For the price, this thing is a beast!!!! Do yourself a favor and quit thinking about it and just buy it....DO IT NOW!!!!! ... show more

Good, solid maul. Nice handle. Nice size and length. Nice weight. Downsides: 1. The cutting edge is not sharp and needs to be sharpened before first use. 2. The end of the handle doesn’t have the very well defined knob like the X-25 has. Would be very helpful for a heavy maul like this. 3. Stickers on the handle are like super glue bonded to the handle. C’mon Fiskars. This is the 21st century. Use stickers that are effortless to remove. 4. No blade/edge guard is included. Plan to invest in one or make your own custom one like I did. Since they don’t supply a guard, I’m guessing that is why the edge isn’t sharp. A double whammy of lost customer satisfaction. ... show more

This is the best manual log splitting tool I have ever used and I’ve split a lot of firewood over the years. I’ve tried the wedge and sledge hammer method. I bought a slide hammer wood splitter. I have a collection of other axes and mauls. This fiskars maul is far and away the best and easiest way to go. I have now probably split about a cord of red oak with it from a tree I cut down about a year ago. I’m a regular size guy in my mid 40’s. It’s not too heavy and I don’t have to swing all that hard. It arrived perfectly sharpened. It splits big round pieces 18-24” in diameter I bucked to about 24” in length with no problem. Minimal effort is required to split up the smaller pieces. If you can lift 8lbs up to head height and drip the maul down on the right spot you can chop firewood. Goes right through like butter. The handle is easy on your hands and is not too slippery to use when wet. Highest possible ratings on this one!!! Fiskars never disappoints. ... show more
