  • Almost Perfect and Generally as Good as They Come
Really great product; if not perfect. Its a heavy shovel overall, great for deep holes, trenches and transplanting. I have a root assassin that i use in combination when removing or transplanting. This one can be used to pry and lift and the root shovel to cut prior to prying. Because of the heft and thick blade (which takes light sharpening well), this shovel can be thrust into hard spots with some ease. I have broken Fiskars shovels in the past (abusing them for those I replace w/ my own $$) and in occasion where I didnt think it was abuse, Fiskars came through. As in some review pictures, the handle can bend/break off. After years of flawless service and some mean and demanding jobs, mine has finally fatigued and cracked and I'm confidently predicting that Fiskars will come through. If you are looking for something light weight and light duty, this is not the one you want; you may find it too heavy to use. One quibble, the D handles on all my Fiskars shovels get loose. There is a small screw that holds the very solid/heavy plastic shovel on and these seem always to get loose over time. I've had success with a dab of Loctite and I suspect some general adhesive would also work. Its the first thing I do after delivery and no problems. Great shovel overall and Fiskars products are generally top of the bunch for design, durability and functionality. ... show more

  • Great addition to garden shed!
I bought this shovel largely because of the very positive reviews written by other customers. It turns out that the reviews are correct! The shovel is VERY well made and performs beautifully at digging narrow and deep holes. It is sturdy, well balanced, and pleasing to use. The price is right, and I doubt the shovel will ever fail. It digs very efficiently and has several features that make it effective, including the wide top handle and the wide foot lip at the top end of the blade. The blade tip is sharp and cuts through small roots with ease. The whole thing seems unbreakable, sturdy, and pleasing to use. A good product that works well, and for a fair price. Highly recommended if you need such a shovel in your garden shed! (It worked well for me while starting about 20 post holes for a new fence that I built. My wife also likes it for transplanting her garden plants and bushes.) ... show more

  • Gorgeous, fabulous tool!
I am thrilled with this spade--it is well-designed and beautifully made. It is a high-quality tool and a great value for the money. I am an ISA certified arborist. I bought this specialized spade to transplant larger, established shrubs and saplings. The sharp, extended blade allows greater undercutting of the root ball (to minimize root damage and reduce transplant shock). The footrest, shaft and handle are all loaded for bear--this is a very well-constructed piece of equipment that stands up under heavy use. (Note that the spade is not designed for prying out rocks or busting up rock concretions, but it is excellent for slicing cleanly through roots; carefully excavating soils; and co-leveraging root balls up to 2.5 feet in diameter or perhaps even larger.) If you've been transplanting your larger specimen plants with a regular spade, do yourself a favor and try one of these--you will be amazed at how much easier the process is, and how much more smoothly your transplant goes. ... show more

So, by now you have probably "detected" that I like to metal detect and that was the reason for this purchase. I was really excited to get it and try it out on a hunt. Here's the breakdown of my opinion on this shovel. I love that it has a long handle so that even my very tall husband can use it with ease and not a strain on his back. I like that it has a narrow end so that when I'm digging I don't make a large wide hole and it's easier to replace the soil and grass with as little disturbance as possible. There is only one thing that I didn't like about it and that is the weight. With the detector in hand, the belt around my waist and other items I carry on a hunt, this is heavy. If it could be lighter and maybe a model that has a folding handle making it easier to carry would be ideal. Otherwise it is a great tool. If you are going to use it around the house for normal yard work then this is a must have. ... show more

  • loves to garden, loves tools
Had my heart set on a transplanting spade for years. Plant a lot, move things around, divide perennials every spring and fall. With all the other tools I have (several generations worth) I couldn't quite justify the expense. This spade is fantastic and the price was right! First day it arrived planted four hollies, moved five hydrangeas and devided three huge hostas. Sharp, strong, and beautifully designed, this is probably going to be my gardening friend for many seasons to come. Special features: Low cost compared to all others D-handle for strong grip Wide step plates with diamond plate traction Color that never lets you miss it in the shed A beauty and very well made from a brand I trust! ... show more

  • Excellent tool
This is a heavy duty tree/plant root removing tool. You don't have to worry about the arm breaking because it is steel. It gives great leverage and digs deep and slices through the thinner roots. I'd use a lopper for the thicker ones before pulling out the main bulb root because some of the roots go 10-15 feet out and can be quite thick. I used a regular shovel before and it was wood and much wider. The arm cracked and the blade warped. This shovel did not. I probably wouldn't use though for trees over 10 feet tall because those roots go forever. Mainly great for trees/plants that are 7 feet or shorter for removing the roots. It would easily make a great planter since it digs deep and easily slices through the ground but I didn't use it for that. ... show more

  • Precision Shovel (Updated: recent design change?)
What a shovel! So far I've used it to transplant two pittosporums (each about 4' tall). It's like a surgeon's instrument. It has an extra-wide foot-stomping plate on the top of the blade that makes it easy to get lots of weight in just the right place. The sturdy plastic handle is comfortable in the hand and solidly attached to rest of the steel shovel. I also used it to lever the pittosporums out of their hole. This worked great with very little flex in the shovel. The pittosporum with soil weighted about 60 pounds I'm guessing. The blade is sharp enough to cut through small 1/4"-to-1/2" or so roots if you are determined. For big roots, a root-pruning saw is easier. Full disclosure: The soil I was digging in was moist from a recent rain, and I didn't hit any large roots or other obstacles of note... pretty much perfect transplanting conditions. Update - 2009-12: This shovel is still digging strong, and I use it a lot. I particularly like the all-metal blade and shaft which allows you to apply a lot of leverage without fear of snapping the shaft. This is very handy when transplanting a large root mass. I've broken one of my other shovels that had a fiberglass shaft by levering it too much. I spray it down after every use and then wipe it with an oiled rag, so it should last a good, long time. Update: 2016-05 Hey, it's still going strong & I still love it. Update: 2017-01 This bad boy is celebrating its 10th birthday. As a treat I used it along with a Sawzall & 12" root blade to propagate/split a 25-gallon tub of Giant Timber Bamboo I've been growing for a few years. Another excellent performance by my fav shovel. Update: 2019-11 My shovel is still going strong. However, I’ve notice several negative reviews recently. I suspect that Fiskar must have changed the design as the shovel is now selling for $23 or so (I paid $37 in 2007 for mine). As you can see in my included picture, I’ve applied some serious leverage on my shovel without it complaining. If Fiskar did cheapen the design (why do companies do this!?), then I’d recommend finding a vintage one. FYI, my model was a “Fiskars 96546935 Transplanting Spade.” ... show more
