  • Works perfectly with my ring
Size: Z-Wave Combo - 2nd Generation Style: Alarm
I have all Ring products it was easy to set up, but confusing because it shows two items on the dashboard. Hopefully I’ll never have need for this but better safe than sorry!

  • It integrates easily with Ring
Size: Z-Wave Combo - 2nd Generation Style: Alarm
I needed a smoke/CO detector that could work with my Ring setup. This fit the bill. Sets up really easily and works well. It doesn't get set off every time you burn some toast but it goes off when you burn a pizza and set it on top of the stove and try to fan away the charcoal. So that's understandable. I will be buying more. ... show more

  • Great experience so far
Size: Z-Wave Combo Alarm Style: Alarm
I've had this alarm for about a month, and am very pleased. So much so that I purchased a second two weeks after the first. However, before I get to the rest of my comments, I'd like to say something about the nature of reviewing smart devices in February 2016. Right now there are several smart systems, not really a clear front runner, and the ecosystems are rather young. I've seen a number of devices where there were strong correlations between the review given, and the system used. The device didn't change between the two systems, the systems changed. The hubs were different, with different chipsets, with different firmware, with different software, with different setups in different houses. So, just a word of advice that a negative review with System A doesn't necessarily mean there would be a bad experience with System B. Try to make sure your situation will be similar before valuing the review - and take everything with a grain of salt. With that out of the way, I'd say that this product is designed well. The alarm is loud, and was fairly sensitive to smoke in my testing. When I say "fairly", I would consider that optimal. Very sensitive would be too sensitive, and cause false alarms, and insensitive is useless. I've not been able to test CO2, so no comment there. The first one I purchased has been running about a month, and is down to 92% on the batteries. It is about twenty feet from my SmartThings v2 hub, with only a couple walls in the way. So, I think that is decent battery life. The second one is in line with that battery usage, and is much father away. Pairing was super easy, no problems there. And, one thing I really liked is the rounded-octagon shaped. That made it very easy to screw in or out of the mounting bracket. I'm not sure if this is SmartThings, or the device, or my software revision, but I was unable to clear the alarm through SmartThings. Seems like that can only be done on the device. But, I don't believe I ever saw anyone specifically mention being able to do this - with any system - so perhaps that is not even an option. But, I could see it as a nice touch. I can hit the button to clear the alarm, because I'm taller, but my wife would have to go get something to step on while it is going off. Having the ability to clear it from SmartThings would be nice for her. But, it's a smoke alarm, hopefully that shouldn't be a common problem, right? ... show more

  • No interconnection to relay an alarm with other detectors is disappointing.
Size: Z-Wave Combo - 2nd Generation Style: Alarm
I've been using this model (ZCOMBO) since 2013. Not it's time to replace those old detectors because they are at their end of life. The detector circuitry is only good for so long, just the nature of the beast. No issue there. But over the past 9 years I have had issues with reporting of battery level with SmartThings. I don't know if it's the detector or the SmartThings Hub's fault but battery status is not reliable. There is no warning when the battery level is low other than the audible from the detector itself. That's all you need I guess but a notification in the app would be nice too, especially for those detectors that may not be located where you are. I bought 6 new detectors and five of them linked up with SmartThings easy enough (much easier than my original ones from 9 years ago did). The sixth would only partially connect and SmartThings warned me about that. After 6 tries I got it to sync fully. Another one of the six units I purchased was faulty right out of the box. As soon as I put the batteries in a couple seconds later it started alarming. I didn't even get to link it to SmartThings so the problem wasn't caused by the SmartThings hub. I removed the batteries and tried again but again in 30 seconds it began alarming and wouldn't quit even after pressing the silence button. So that one got returned and I will buy another to replace it. The biggest thing missing from this version is that they do not relay an alarm. If one goes off the others DO NOT also sound off. I know First Alert has another version that looks very similar to the ZCOMBO and does relay an alarm from other units but that version does not work with SmartThings or Ring. Another feature missing is they do not work with Alexa. The detectors use Z-Wave and Alexa does not (directly) since it is connected using Wi-Fi. But a HA hub like SmartThings can bridge that gap. If this were possible then Alexa could be used to make announcements when a detector alarms due to smoke or CO level. But Alexa does not even know the detectors exist. That's not First Alert's fault but you would think they would work with Alexa to make it happen. ... show more

  • If You are a Smartthings USER
Size: Z-Wave Combo - 2nd Generation Style: Alarm
If you are a smartthings user, be aware, it is not intuitive at all on how to add this to your network (this is more a dig directed at SamSung than FirstAlert). The Alarm works great, adding it to the network it a challenge. 1 I choose add a device, 2. then chose First Alert 3 it had me scan the code (at the bottom it had a link for setup without code) 4 then took me to a page that said "prepare the device". Nothing else, and no instructions in the documentation. What I did was to cancel the setup, then go thru the first two steps again. on the third step I chose the "Setup without code". It took me to a page that instructed me to remove batteries, put them back in and as you were closing the tray, press the button on the firealarm for 2 seconds. I did that, then it asks for the first 4 digits of the code on the package, and the fire alarm. I did that, and it works like a charm. ... show more
