    • The quality of the blade is very poor.
I bought this because it doesn't have the surrounding circular rims and therefore I assumed it would be better to handle wider pieces of wood. I found that the quality of the blade is very poor and it only works well on soft wood, regardless of the width of the wood. With harder wood (I'm chopping mesquite), my sledgehammer cannot get the wood to split over the blade, although using the stand-alone wedge splitters the same sledgehammer is able to crack the wood relatively easily. Also, the hard wood actually dented the blade in several pieces after only a couple of hours of chopping. ... show more

I had borrowed one of these wood splitters from someone and decided to pick this one up for myself. The borrowed one is on the right in the photo and has the closed-ring top design, and, sadly, I actually prefer that style. I thought the XXL style would be better, but the closed-ring style helps hold steady the log you're trying to split. And I can only split smaller-sized logs anyway. Plus, if you should trip and hit your head on this splitter, it is going to split your head open like a cantaloupe. At least the closed-ring style gives you *some* protection. The gloves they include are decent, and the log hauler is okay. Rather than including those items, I wish they included a good heavy mallet. I use a hammer, and it's not the best. ... show more
