  • Nice upgrade from Fire 7 (kids edition)
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Offer Type: With Special Offers Color: Black Style: Fire HD 8
Purchased as a bday gift for my 5-yr old daughter who enjoyed her Kindle Fire 7 kids edition for several years. The Fire 8 HD a nice upgrade...much more powerful, can run the latest and greatest apps, longer-lasting battery (compared to the Fire 7 it lasts at least a few hours longer between charges), and the 8" HD display is crisp/sharp, more than large enough for kids' movies and videos. A no-brainer add-on (if you purchased for a kid) is a durable case made of EVA foam...there are many available that will protect the tablet from wear & tear as well as everyday bumps and general abuse. Kids will drop and abuse tablets no matter how careful you might consider them. A case with a stand is the best option because I found that my 5 yr old daughter would always lean the Amazon-included kids case (Fire 7 kids edition) against random objects to keep it more upright. The stand makes things a lot easier for them. Additionally, a tempered glass screen protector will keep the tablet's touchscreen shielded from spills, drops, and greasy kids' fingerprints, well worth it. Last but not least, go for a micro SD card. You should be able to find 128GB micro SD cards for under $25. 16GB of internal storage is large enough for the OS and updates, but most kids will chew through that storage quickly once they figure out how to download apps, books, and games from the Amazon app store. If your kid hasn't figured that out yet, they will eventually. Amazon FreeTime makes books and games easily accessible for kids, and those eat up storage space like it's going out of style. Overall the Fire 8 HD is a big performance boost from the smaller Fire 7 predecessors. It has a fairly beefy quad core CPU, and the HD display is much sharper than the non-HD displays on the older Fire 7 models. Perfect tablet for younger kids ages 4 and up. 5 stars for ease of use, versatility, and price/performance. A much more reasonable, cost-effective alternative to a brutally overpriced iPad, which IMO is way too much $$ to spend on something a kid will toss around and use in a limited manner. Amazon's Fire tablets are the best option out there for kids (and adults who aren't concerned with 3D processing power on a tablet). ... show more

  • The little engine that could!
Digital Storage Capacity: 16 GB Offer Type: With Special Offers Color: Black Style: Fire HD 8
I was originally planning to purchase a Kindle paper white and leave the stone age of physical books which not only takes up space, but are super fragile. However, I love to read comics as well, and they do not translate well on kindle, even if it's e ink. Glad I purchased this product. I have the portability of a kindle with the screen quality of a tablet. The fire 8 hd felt good in my hands, I was worried at first being my hands are huge, but once I took the device out the packaging I was pleased. I purchased the 16 GB version which I think is more than enough for onboard storage but I also purchased a 128 gig SD card to store my books and comics on which is plenty of space, I can always upgrde latter if the need arises, this device supports up to 400 GBof external storage and an smooth user interface. My only issues, I had to format my Scan disc SD card at the prompt of the device, it was not compatible. Not a total deal breaker because I purchased the card new, and after I followed the system prompts to do so, all was well, but I wonder was the compatibility issue the card it's self, or the age of the device, it came out 2015 I think. Even if I had books on the card already and had to reformat it, I would be more annoyed then anything, I would just have to download them from the kindle store, you won't be charged agin. The battery life could be better, greater than a cell phone would be, but you would still have to charge it over night, or much sooner if you watch videos on it. Do not look for google play vudu or youtube apps, Amazon does not play well with others but you can easily dowload them back door style and there are tons of videos on line that make it really easy to do, you won't get full functionality though with vudu, (buying or renting movies) which is good for you because they are "mirror apps", you would have to make your vudu movie purchases from your phone or computer. The Ram the device has is laughable, 1.3GHz, it's saving grace is that it's a quad core, the weakness of the RAM really shows when you have a lot of apps or pages open. But hey, I brought this to read books and comics and for that purpose it serves well. In closing, if you are looking for a device you can read e books, as well as the occasional comic and not break the bank, go for it. But if you love to stream and play games, I would not recommend. ... show more

  • Great for what it is. Even better with Google Play store side loaded
Digital Storage Capacity: 32 GB Offer Type: With Special Offers Color: Marine Blue Style: Fire HD 8
I got my Fire HD 8 on release day and set up was a breeze. I side loaded the Google Play store (check Youtube, it's easy) and installed my favorite Google apps, Youtube, Google Play Music, Google 1, Google Drive,Google Docs and a slew of other apps I like from the Play Store that Amazon's app store does not provide and I'm loving the tablet. It's no speed demon but for the price I wasn't looking for cutting edge technology. I also bought the cover and the docking station and switch between the two easily as I retire to my bedroom for the night. I previously was using a Fire 6 tablet and a Samsung Galaxy tab S3. The Kindle Fire 6 was great for it's size and the Galaxy Tab was great (older now, less reliable battery life due to age) for the same reasons but this Kindle Fire HD 8 blends the best of both worlds for me regarding size. It's a nice companion to have near, lets me use the apps that I like, moderate gaming, lots of reading and now having both Amazon Music and Google Play Music, a slew of options for music. If you are looking for a workhorse you're better off with your iPad or mainstream Android tablet . If you are looking for a nice reliable multimedia hub, look no further than this tablet. The price is on point for the features it has provided thus far and I am happy with my purchase. it is a great middle of the road tablet and the price it can't be beat. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because there is nothing revolutionary about this tablet. It's not a must have by any means but it fits the casual niche perfectly. ... show more
