So I got this to install in a brand new 13” DeWalt planer this was all about 2 months ago. I installed it very soon after I received everything. Watched multiple you tube videos, the installation was fairly easy. I used it today for the first time. I ran a test piece of poplar through to make sure everything was ok and the boards were smooth. They were perfect. I ran some white oak, 2 boards glued together 11 1/2” wide. Much quieter than straight blades( I had the same planer years ago, it was so loud the neighbors complained). Also ran a glue up of a bunch of thin strips of hard maple, Purple Heart, and blood wood. No problem. I was concerned the hardened glue might chip the blades, but no problems. The only issue is with the cutters being in constant contact with the wood the machine is pulling way more amperage. Tripped the 20 amp breaker, but only once. There is a video on you tube where the guy test the amp draw straight blades vs helical cutter. Helical was quite a bit higher. Just for the quiet factor it is worth it. Not any louder than my 5hp grizzly table saw.

I looked for a cutter head that had more than 10-20 reviews and price was a consideration since it was a retirement gift for my son. This one had 77 reviews so I felt it was worth the risk/$$$. No regrets! It took more time to install the 40 knives than the tear-down and assembly of the planer and head. Easy to do and the only special tools needed are internal/external snap-ring pliers this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GZCQP4N?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 and a T-20 bit for the knife screws; Buy either a 4Nm or 5Nm or 6Nm or a 1/4" torque wrench to tighten the screws on each knife. I torqued to 4.5Nm which equals 38-40 inch-pounds. I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G4QYZ83B?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title You don't need to torque them, but it's better/cheaper than cracking the knives or too loose and one comes flies out and damages itself, other knives (or you). I've only had it installed for about a week now, but I have ran quite a few boards thru already and I am completely satisfied. Installation was easy, and quality seems quite good because the boards are smooth, flat and dimensionally accurate. The planer is significantly quieter too, so much so, that on small cuts I have to look at my cyclone separator to see if there are chips passing thru to make sure I'm taking a cut!

This was definitely a difficult install. Make sure you read the directions and or watch the videos on YouTube first. Do not install the cutter heads before you install the cylinder. It's definitely more efficient than the three blade system for the DeWalt 735. Only had one issue with one cutterhead that was easy to adjust. I run purple heart and a lot of really dense hardwoods through it. I've had very little issues after the install as far as breaker tripping. It sounds different than the factory noise after install, but it seems to run, smooth and overall no complaints. Not sure where it's made but it definitely is decent quality and durable enough to replace the factory blades. Again I stress find a good YouTube video.

Wow what a difference. Sound level alone was way less than half. Finish is so much smoother. I work in an attached garage and my wife commented immediately on how much quieter it was. Assembly was smooth and took a little over an hour. Took the time to pull the cover and the gearbox and move the grease back onto the gears, was plenty in there just needed to be moved back to the friction areas. Looking forward to my next project.

The first thing they should mention is if you are not mechanically inclined or don’t have the proper tools (snap ring pliers) make sure there is a DeWalt repair facility near you. This is NOT an easy 10 min job. So in addition to the cost add another couple 100 for someone to install it.

Everything was right about my experience. I purchased one because they got good reviews on YouTube. I wasn’t disappointed. First of all, the package arrived way earlier than expected and it came with high quality packaging all rust prevention and the bits came out of the Machine so I didn’t have to take them all off to install it in the planer. I took my time installing this and I actually enjoyed it. I had looked at a couple of videos so I knew what to expect. The direction are in color and good. My advice would be to watch a YouTube video before you even start. The only complaint I have about the directions is that they were rather small paper they were written on. I’m 61, and my eyes are getting bad so that could be the excuse I’m going to use lol. So everything came about on this rather well it took me approximately 3 1/2 hours to do the full uninstall and install. I’m sure I could’ve did it a little quicker than that if I pushed myself, but like I said, I took my time and enjoyed it. Two things that you will need if you do not have them you need to order them maybe from Amazon? You will need a pair of snap ring pliers because there’s three snap rings to take off, and you’ll need a 1/4 inch torque wrench or torque screwdriver Because you’re supposed to torque the bits down to 46 inch pounds.
