Description

Authoritatively written and lavishly illustrated, Fender Stratocaster® 70 Years is the officially licensed anniversary celebration of this legendary guitar. Ever present in the music world, the Fender Stratocaster® guitar is also an icon of popular culture, its attractive lines and innovative features as forward-looking today as they were when Leo Fender introduced the guitar to the world in 1954. In Fender Stratocaster® 70 Years, musician and guitar historian Dave Hunter traces Stratocaster® guitars across seven decades and into the present, beginning with Leo Fender’s triumph of mid-century design originating in his modest shop in Fullerton, California. From there, Hunter explores: Groundbreaking features of the new design in the context of the contemporary guitar market and Fender’s existing Telecaster® guitar. The Stratocaster’s solidbody three-pickup configuration, “tremolo” bridge, bolt-on neck, and contoured body, as well as the roles that country pickers played in the guitar’s early development.Design improvements undertaken throughout the Stratocaster’s first decade, such as the introduction of a rosewood fingerboard and Custom Color options to complement the initial Sunburst finish.CBS’s 1965 acquisition of Fender and its effects on company culture and the Stratocaster, as well as the 1985 acquisition of Fender spearheaded by a group of employees. The creation of the Fender Custom Shop and that elite group’s relationship to the Stratocaster over the years.Fender’s forward- thinking combination of vintage specs and materials with modern features in Stratocaster guitars that offer classic styling and current conveniences. Along the way, Hunter contextualizes the evolving Stratocaster within the contemporary guitar industry and shows the relationships that admired players throughout the decades have enjoyed with this guitar, including Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Dick Dale, Jimi Hendrix, Yngwie Malmsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, and H.E.R.—to name a few! Illustrated throughout with rare images from the Fender archives, Fender Stratocaster 70 Years® treats readers to rare behind-the-scenes views of the shop floor and Custom Shop throughout the years, studio imagery of the guitars, rare period advertising and brochures, and performance images of Fender players. Often imitated but never duplicated, the Fender Stratocaster® remains a triumph of design more than seven decades on. This is the official and definitive illustrated story of this guitar—and a must-have for every guitar enthusiast. Read more

  • Best gift for my dads birthday!
Bought this for my dad’s 70th and he was so surprised. This meant a lot since it was the 70th year as well.

  • Loads of history
Gave book as a 70th birthday gift to a guitarist. It was well received and they enjoyed all the history and photos.

  • Beautiful book on one of the most iconic guitar designs of all-time
The Fender Stratocaster book is a beautifully done hardcover book (housed in a rigid thick slipcase) covering the history and famous players of the Fender Stratocaster. This is one of the most-iconic electric guitar designs, along with the Fender Telecaster and the Gibson Les Paul, used for decades by some of the finest guitarists in popular music. Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, Jeff Beck, and Bonnie Raitt, among others, are just some of the famous players who've played Strats. Great vintage photos from the Fender archives, with details on the development of the guitar, are also included - this book is a deeper-dive into the Strat, from the Fender book that came out earlier this year, which covered the company overall. Recommended for the guitarist or rock music fan in your life. ... show more

  • Progressive
The packaging is excellent, and this book would make a fine presentable gift for a true fan. I did just that, sharing it with my son's guitar teacher after I went through it. Here's what we thought: The historical photographs are excellent. They bring you back to the days of simpler design and singular purpose, a truly bygone age. For guitarists like my bud, it's the nature of the workshop that caught his eye. He said that guitarists like to see that building process and where it takes place. Of course, throw in Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Dave Gilmore, etc., and you have star power as well. The early endorsers are represented as well. The book starts with surrounding context, the world in which Leo Fender lived and how he got into electronics and design. Here's where it progresses. At first, the book is a straightforward history, none too technical, but then, about 100 pages in or so, it pulls you into that technical world of design. But you can keep up, as it's still digestible to the non-Fender head. The author's voice carries everybody along for the ride at a good, even pace. Even the decline of the product is discussed candidly and informatively. I can say with full faith that at least one guitarist I know loved this book. ... show more

  • Familiar story (for enthusiasts), novel presentation
What more can be said about Fender's most famous guitar? But an anniversary book seemed inevitable in this day and age, so... The story is left in the capable hands of Dave Hunter, who acknowledges the work of esteemed historians before him, like Tom Wheeler and Tony Bacon. Under the circumstances, Hunter did an admirable job in adding voices that maybe haven't been highlighted so much in the past, such as John Page. Then there's the presentation. The box that the book comes in is a touch that is above and beyond most books on the subject, as is the page layout. And Hunter seems to have gone the extra mile to find photos of instruments from vintage dealers as well as artist photos, making sure this isn't another collection of those white-background studio photos. Maybe you've heard most of the story or claim to know it all, but you haven't seen it all rolled up like this. ... show more

  • BOREING
Being that I just got a 70th anniversary strat in my collection, I thought this book would go over the years and the models of guitars that progressed. Very little of that, and allot of resurfaced fluff to fill in space.

  • Beautifully done — A perfect gift for your favorite guitarist
What a cool book! I got this for my musician/composer husband who plays guitar and I absolutely got sucked into it. It's everything you ever wanted to know about the Fender Stratocaster from its humble beginnings to the future of the company and the instrument. There's plenty of history baked into this 70-year look at this iconic rock n' roll lover's dream. Both my grandad and my husband played a strat (in addition to other types of guitars) — it's a classic every guitar aficionado knows. The perfect gift for guitarists or rock n' roll history buffs, Dave Hunter fills this tome with beautiful pics of the Strat throughout those 70s years breaking down the information into easy-to-pick-up-where-you-left-off segments that make the book enjoyable for both the casual or dedicated reader. So giftable, it comes with a gorgeous embossed hard case, outlined with the body of the guitar on one side and the neck on the other. Once freed of its sleeve, you'll admire the excellent quality of the cover, end pages, and the beautiful glossy photos and popping graphics inside. Makes an excellent conversation piece, coffee table book, or collectible. Highly-recommend. ... show more

  • A great book on the Stratocaster Guitar.
If you love guitars or even if you're just into music, this is a wonderful book! I don't play the guitar myself, but I love guitar instrumentals. I love listening to Les Paul, Dick Dale, The Ventures, Chet Atkins, Santo & Johnny, Duane Eddy... I've always been intrigued by what guitars were used to create this great music. Lot's of great information on the origin of the Stratocaster, its history and even its future! Lots of great photos! A great book to leave out and page through. It's also a great gift for the music lover in your life (probably not if they're more into classical music or opera, but it's good to broaden their horizon!) It's a nice hefty book (not too big where it'll crush you if you drop it on yourself) and it comes in a bookcase, which is a really nice touch. (Just reread this and I certainly used the word "great" a lot. I must think this is a great book or something.) ... show more
