  • Sweet sounding bass with minimal setup required
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: Buttercream
Received this guitar in two days and right out of the box it sounded great! A minimal amount of setup was required (few adjustments to the frets and pickup distance) but this guitar has been my go to for the past year. Im sure there are other brands of guitars that are better at this price range but nothing beats the quality and feel of a Fender guitar. My only complaint is that the buttercream color looks more like yellow in certain lighting. Frets and fretboard were smooth and easy to play. Pickups are nice and loud. If one is looking for an upgrade to the squire, this is a good place to start. ... show more

  • This is a nice bass
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: Black
I'm a long time bass player, been playing since the '70s. Owned a LOT of basses over that time, and own quite a few now. I have USA Fenders, Rickenbacker, Gibson Thunderbird, MM Stingray, etc. This MIM Fender holds up with them all. I actually prefer it over my American Jazz Bass because of the lighter weight. It plays just a nicely, and I love the stock pickups. Very versatile. I bought this on a "used" discount although it's brand new and came with the hang tags still on it. It was meant to be a backup, but it's becoming a daily player. As you can tell, I highly recommend this bass. Save yourself around $1k and buy this "Player" version if you're interested in playing over collecting. I do both, and this is a great every day instrument. ... show more

  • I wasn't expecting greatness!
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: Black
I never thought I would buy an instrument from Amazon. I typically like to try before I buy so I know exactly what I am getting, but the price dropped to $549, so I figured, "Why not?!" I am happy to report, I was not disappointed. It showed up packaged well and everything was in perfect condition. The neck was nice and straight, and the action was almost exactly where I like it. I honestly don't think I'm even going to get it set up like I originally intended to do. This thing is beautiful, and plays very nicely! The only gripe I have is that the frets could be sanded down a bit for my liking, but it's definitely not bad! ... show more

  • Great! If you know how to set it up yourself
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: Tidepool
The Bad: - There was no factory setup done to this bass, I believe it was assembled, given a quick functionality test then boxed. It needed a full setup on arrival including the truss rod (took more than a full turn to get it to spec!), intonation, saddle height and pickup height. If you are not comfortable doing your own setups you will have to factor the cost of getting it done by a professional. - Tone knob broke two days after bass arrived, see picture. I did not bang it against anything or treat it roughly at all. I simply turned the tone knob and the top of it snapped off. To me it’s not worth the effort of contacting Fender for warranty service, I just ordered a replacement. The Good: - Once the bass is properly set up it plays and sounds fantastic! - The satin finish on the back of the neck is very smooth and feels good, not sticky at all. - All the wood and hardware is very solid without making the bass too heavy. Mine weighs in at 9.2 lbs which is not bad for an alder body Jazz bass. - The finish looks metallic and is very nice, much better than what I was expecting, and it is flawless on mine. The color seems to look either blue or green depending on lighting. - Fretwork is really good, edges slightly rough but not bad enough to cause any problems. There are no uneven frets and no buzzing or dead spots. Bottom line: Overall, I am very happy with this purchase, even though I am a bit disappointed with Fender over the lack of setup and the broken tone knob. For me these are both very minor issues but still disappointing at this price point. I wanted a simple classic Jazz bass to add to my arsenal and this bass fits the bill. It does play and sound great plus looks really nice, highly recommended if you are good with doing your own setups. ... show more

  • What A Beauty
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: 3-Color Sunburst
The MIM in sunburst and maple neck was on sale, so I went for it. It arrived in perfect condition without a scratch and ready to play after a setup. It has the Fender growl I was looking for and the neck was easy to navigate. It is a bit heavier than I'm used to, as a woman I look for the lightest bass I can find, still it's worth the extra weight. I can see why it's the standard for bassists. I think I'll keep it.👍🎸😎 ... show more

  • It's the J Bass.
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: Polar White
This has the nicest fretwork of any of my other Fenders. I have returned a Player tele for excessive fret sprout, but I also tolerated some less-than-perfect fret ends on my Player P bass because they were negligible. This is gorgeous, fret ends are perfect. I'm blown away by how nicely finished the neck feels. Out of the box, I had to give the truss rod nearly a full turn to get the neck bow under control, and then put several turns to each saddle to intonate. I expect some amount of that to be necessary for any guitar/bass that hasn't been through a luthier setup, and it's easy enough to do. Now I've got my Player P for flatwounds and a matching Player J for roundwounds, and I'm a very happy bass player. ... show more

  • It's awesome!
Hand Orientation: Right Style: Maple Fingerboard Color: Tidepool
Overall, this is a great bass and I'm really happy with my purchase. It sounds great with the two pickups, and the pickup in the middle of the body gives your hand a natural place to rest. One thing to make clear: I bought a different new bass once, took it out of the box, and proceeded to play it for about a year without adjusting the action. You can't do that with this one. It's essentially unplayable out of the box because the action is so high. You absolutely have to set it up or take it to a music shop and have it set up professionally. But once you do that, it's great. ... show more
