First the pros: Quality: not one blemish (ok one but it doesn't count). Paint is perfect. No sharp frets. No dead frets. I can easily bend without fretting out on higher frets. This guitar was set up PERFECT. And I know that because I've been switching from 10's to 9's thanks to Rick Beato proving 10's rob your tone on youtube. Normally on a 24" scale guitar that would mean buzz starting after replacing the strings since they'll be looser. NOPE. Not a hint of buzz, and the action is a little lower than I typically like. I didn't have to mess with the string height or intonation after swapping from the 10-46s that it came with to 9-42's. Aftermarket: Did not come with a case. At the asking price I did not care. Took me about 9 seconds to find one Fender branded, made for duo-sonic/mustang in the color I like. Had it delivered the SAME DAY. That's awesome. That's amazon rocking though, not Fender. Frets were not just polished they were perfect. The fretboard is the kind lazy guys like me love. Sealed. So smooth buttery frets, and I never have to oil this fretboard. THIS IS WHY you get fender's with the maple fretboard. It not only looks better and gives you a little more bright, it's lazier. This is where the one blemish comes in. The awesome fretboard had ONE FRET with a tiny little bit of lacquer they missed close to the bottom of the fret (11th fret). It was a 10 second fix with a razor and a q-tip. That's it. Now the cons: I'm getting 60hz hum in every switch position (including middle). This isn't a huge deal because I'm changing the perfectly fine (they really are) pickups with some Tonerider classics. I prefer the slight gonk the alnico 2 magnets give you over what I think is ceramic in the fender p90's. But I mean, it's such a nitpicky thing. Most sane people will not care. P90's are impossible to mess up. I've never heard a bad one. But it means I have some sort of factory created grounding issue. Probably in the switch, which feels amazing. I'm guessing a tiny blob of solder I'll find. I'm already not worried. It already sounds amazing because of the construction. I don't see changing much of anything else. The hardware is fantastic. The pots are great. I think they are 375's. Which is great because it's like free hotrodding for normal p90's. They'll sound hotter. And hotter alnico II's sound better than alnico V's with typical pots. So huge win. Great parts. The taper isn't "perfect" but I've never cared about pot taper. I'm usually doing tone and volume with the amp. I could probably replace my volume knob with an on-off switch. I don't roll off to clean up, I start clean and add noise with pedals. That said rolling off the cleans is fine. Minor nitpick, They angled the pickup switch "cool" where it's at an angle. I'll undo their coolness because I'm frequently doing high speed pinky flips down to bridge. One of the reasons I pick this guitar is for that quick pickup switching without me losing my place. In fact I might angle it slightly the other way to make that easier. That said most people will probably appreciate the cool factory switch angle. 20 year old me would. The shorter scale gets addictive then it's all you want. That's the big downside. You'll find yourself preferring it. I'm already eyeing up Japanese 24" strats and jazzmasters. It's easier to play so it's like a crutch. But the combination of a P90 and slinky strings makes you a better player. You can't be lazy because P90s broadcast every mistake very loudly unlike most humbuckers and fender's one trick single coils. But it's so much more rewarding. There's a reason the very bests guitarists eventually make it to P90's before they kick the bucket. This guitar might be the best value in a quality instrument with that P90 charm in a short scale that has a following and aftermarket support. If I was a gigging musician again, I'd probably buy two of these and change almost nothing. Just for the natural tone of the guitar itself, this is a keeper. If you've been on the fence about getting your first "good guitar" this would be a good choice. Unless you must have a tremolo. Then spend another 300 and get the vintera mustang. The orange one is awesome. If it doesn't have to be fender (mine does) Gretch has an amazing deal on the P90 streamliner, and one of them is cadillac green. Their P90's are awesome. You'll save a couple hundred over the mustang. Also, in this age of CNC guitars, if you don't mind correcting mistakes, you can luck out and get a really decent P90 harley benton gold top for crazy cheap. Just don't expect the frets to be perfect, or the neck, or the finish, or the electronics. And you'll probably hate the tuners unless they are Gotoh's. But the wood itself will be amazing, and the mistakes correctable. It's almost like the extra you pay for a Fender or Gretch these days is for that perfect unboxing experience, and premium hardware. Just, let's say you buy that harley benton for 150 bucks. Now there's shipping because they are UK based. That's another 70. Then you hate the tuners and want something decent, that's another 70. Then you need to get a real setup done because you can't do it yourself, that could cost an easy 100. If something is actually wrong with it, another 100. If you can do all the work yourself, definitely worth it just to make it yours. If you are paying someone else to do it, you could have just bought a Gretch or Fender. The Squire Classic Vibe series is also crazy good. But a little more and you could have a Fender. Maybe a few years ago, Squires were catching up to the Player series, but after this Mustang P90 experience, I'm not so sure anymore. This guitar feels like 1000 bucks right out of the box. Even with the minor grounding issue. I know they'd fix it for free. That might be the maple fretboard. Something about them makes fenders feel special and expensive. Hope this helps.

I own both MIM and American Fenders. I was surprised how well the newer MIM Fenders are. They've improved tremendously past 10 years. Only thing that is little underwhelming are the tuners which I will replace with a locking ones. Besides that, it's a very well crafted guitar. I love these shorter scale (24") guitars. They are great if you have difficulty holding complex chords that require big stretch on standard length (25.5") guitars. The tone is typical Fender chime but with little more mids due to the shorter scale. Very comfortable to play and sounds great.

Light and sporty short scale. Great guitar for a person that plays a lot and needs an ergonomic guitar - a guitar made by computers and robots to be played most comfortably by humans. These guitars are easy to handle and sound super mega good. My guitar is a natural / pau ferro p90 version. It is a superior guitar. It less than the expected buzz from the p90 electronics that are not reverse wound. It is very reasonably quiet but the buzz will come starkly to light with a distortion or overdrive pedal, very easily managed with a noise gate pedal.

I liked my regular player mustang so much, I got the mustang 90. I've always been a fan of p90s, but I was hesitant to try them in this form factor. My worries were unfounded. This thing sounds phenomenal. It has the same easy playability, same familiar look, stable tuning, and decent choices in colors. It plays flawlessly. The only con I can find is that it's a little bit pricey. If you can find a discounted one like I did, grab it.

Small leap of faith purchasing this due to an Amazon Resale and knowing if needed to be returned would be no hassle and free. Pics from webpage showed serial number for 2019. The guitar that arrived was 2022. Clear plastic wrap and sticker were still on pickguard and neck plate. When removed there was no signs of aging or fading where the sticker covered the pick guard. The tone knob (pot) was super loose but was a quick fix to tighten properly. Neck straight, no dead frets, came with 10 gauge strings. Notes ring out very well with low action and it plays very nice. This Players Mustang from 2022 was made in Mexico, hard tail (no wang bar), 22 frets (medium/jumbo), short scale, smaller body and neck radius than average Stratocaster. Two single coils with 3 way toggle switch. A good/fair price for a used guitar that obviously was not used. A good experience from certified Amazon Resale.

Maybe I just got lucky, but the guitar came out of the box needing very little adjustment or setup. The intonation was spot on except for one string needing a few turns of a screw to get it set. Very happy with this product.
