Description

Flea’s funk- and jazz-influenced basslines helped propel the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the top of the rock and alternative charts while redefining the role of bass in the modern era. Flea’s unique playing style brought a welcome breath of fresh air to the musical landscape of the past four decades, inspiring countless bassists to add a funky touch to their sound while exploring new techniques and harmonic possibilities. To celebrate his enduring influence, we’ve recreated his prized Shell Pink ’61 Jazz Bass that he received from a fan and used to record the Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium and The Getaway, as well as with the supergroup, Atoms For Peace.

  • Setup not exceptional but acceptable
Color: Shell Pink
I would have hoped for the setup to be a bit better. Screws on pickups were stripped. Saddle barrels and pickups are crooked but the action is low and the neck is straight. A few adjustments to those minor things and a tune and it really is a solid and great sounding bass. It looks and plays exactly as you would hope for the money and level of instrument. The 'road worn' may be gimmicky but I do like the fact that I don't have to worry about putting a scratch or dent in my relatively expensive for a new MIM J bass, so that's nice. Tone is perfect. Pickups are quiet (no hum or buzz) and have the higher end Fender sound. I normally play dual humbucker setups and have always wanted a nice J, I'm glad I waited for this one. If the setup was payed a bit more love out of the box I would give this 5 stars, but it was a bit ugly imo. ... show more

  • I've always wanted to own a Flea signature bass
Color: Shell Pink
This is currently the best feeling bass I own (I have a Marcus Miller Signature from Japan and two Squiers). The knob setup is the 2nd reason I wanted this bass, it makes the most sense to me. At first I was a little weary of 'road worn' style guitars, but it turns out, now that it is a little beat up I tend to worry less about accidentally denting or scratching it. The unfinished neck feels amazing and fast. ... show more

  • Digging it.
Color: Shell Pink
I am really digging this bass so far. I love how there are tone and volume knobs for each pickup. The sounds and tones you can create are amazing. The band I play with has a wide range and I can dial this bass in to make the right sound for the song.

  • BASS !!!!!
Color: Shell Pink
Exceeded expectations that were already pretty high. I am a Flea & RHCP FAN but this bass really has nothing to do with that. Just a great instrument.

  • Good attempt - but details matter
Color: Shell Pink
I was initially very excited when I saw that Fender was going to launch this bass and that the pricepoint was going to be considerably lower than a genuine 61 jazz bass. That being said, it's disappointing that Fender didn't spend more time on the fine details to make this really feel like it's another one of Flea's basses (perhaps this was intentional). Some details that are off are: The weathering of the paint where you can see wood - if you look at any photos of the original one Flea owns, you can see that he hasn't worn through the wood and that the paint is lighter in the "worn" areas. Another detail is the missing string mute screws and screw holes for the pickup covers. The pick guard is also a much darker hue than the original bass. Also the headstock on Flea's original has a screw on the back (google photos). All in all, it was a good attempt by Fender, however if marketing something as "Just like Flea's" they should really take the extra step to put those finishing touches/details in to really make it feel like the original. ... show more
