I have a LARGE plastic baby pool that I use for my 2 ducks. Since it can get REALLY cold at 8700+ ft in elevation here in the Rockies, I wanted something that was going to keep the water thawed so the ducks could swim and bathe all winter. This product works well. So far the temps have dipped as low as 10 degrees at night and the pool has been ice free in the mornings - even in high winds. While I know and understand that the instructions insist you do not use an extension cord, I have no other option. After checking with multiple farmers in my area, many of them told me they're using one with an extension cord for years without any issues (however I would always suggest you follow mfg's guidelines to the T). I've been using the de-icer for a few weeks now. I'll update if anything changes.

We use this heater in combination with a 250 watt of the same brand to heat 100 gallon Rubbermaid horse troughs in the winter. By surrounding the tanks with wood frames and sawdust we can use the 250 watt Oct & Nov, the 500 watt Dec, both Jan and Feb, back to the 500 alone in March and the 250 watt in April. Using one half the electricity of a 1500 watt plug in. We have three tanks to heat so saving any we can helps. These last about three years reliably.

I have used these de-icers in my small fountain for 12 years. The normally only last a year or two. But this time I coated the unit with Corrosion X and I'm on my third winter and it's working fine. 12/01/2018 I just put the deicer out for the fourth winter. After you remove it in the spring clean and coat it inside and out with Corrosion X. Let it air dry all summer and apply more Corrosion X and wipe dry before installing it in the fall. It keeps the water from freezing and in harmless to birds.

I bought a very expensive heated birdbath that died in our Vermont winter very quickly. This is the only water heater I could find that worked for our birdbath. I had to use a heavy rock to keep it submerged, but as long as it is submerged in the water, it works beautifully, unlike any other we tried. I use a cover over the electrical connection to keep water off the plugs, and I am very happy with this. I highly recommend it for keeping any water from freezing at any temperatures. It has gotten very cold here this winter and it kept our birdbath from freezing.

After years, I've finally replaced all my tank heaters with this kind. These seem to work the best for me. There is nothing to come unscrewed and come apart and not having to have a wire coil around the cord has never been a problem for me. My horses don't bother them, though I guess if you had a horse that did, you might want to get a different kind or rig something up. I gave only one star for value because I was surprised to find this same heater for $10 cheaper at my local Tractor Supply. Darn, I should have looked there first!

Bought from Amazon Nov 2021 and used throughout winter of 2021-2022 in SD with no problems. Feb 20 2022 bird bath was solid ice and GFI tripped, so I moved the cord to a different outlet and it too tripped. Bought a different brand heater at local hardware store. Plugged this unit into a GFI in my house at room temp and it tripped. Called manufacturere and got a negative response even though it was used for only 3 months less than a year ago. This unit replaced a heater I used for 15 winters...yes 15 winters in SD same brand. Will not ever buy anything electrical mail order again. I had to use the replacement heater to melt the ice so I could remove the failed unit.

I have it in a kiddie pool for my ducks. Keeps the water thawed even on days the temps dip into the single digits. Simple to use and unlike others I like that it has a thermostat to turn itself on/off so it's not just burning electricity on days the temps are well above freezing. To the previous reviewer who complained it shorted out in the stock tank. It MUST be plugged into a GFCI protected outlet. You are an idiot if you put something electric in a pool of water and don't expect the unexpected. Buy an GFCI outlet or extension cord if need be. I don't know how many times on the box and instructions it says it needs to be on a GFCI outlet.
