I have used these heaters through Many Montana winters. They usually last 3-5 yrs and due to GOK end up non-functional. So do all of the others I have tried. They are easy to put into the tank, work well with thermostat. They work out of water which I would rather they didn't, but have a temperature cut off. It is a major advantage to have this go through the water plug esp with young stock who may decide it is fun to pull out a floating heater or bite the cord and get electrocuted. I always keep a spare on hand.Considering the price, this heater is a very good investment.

Just be careful to only place this beast in a large, deep trough because the heating element can get quite hot. My only concern would be if the water level became too low and the device was exposed, potentially causing an animal to burn itself. However, as long as you properly install it in a large deep trough and maintain the correct water levels, this device will definitely keep the ice at bay. As an added safety step, we typically keep it unplugged and only plug it in when the temperatures drop below freezing.

These work really well in mild southern winters. Use mine in the 50 gallon Rubbermaid trough. During the coldest spells, they have not frozen.

Bought this de-icer last month and it finally got cold enough to use. It worked for a total of 1 day before the heating element stopped working. I checked the wiring and tested the outlet. It’s definitely the heating element. For the last 2 days I’ve had to break sheets of ice off of my trough twice a day, and it has only just barely been below freezing! Unfortunately, I had to run out to a store further away and spend more $$ to purchase a replacement because Amazon wouldn’t be able to get the new one to me in time. Super disappointed with this purchase.
