Description

Although best known as the sister of Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-47) was a virtuoso pianist and a composer of considerable merit in her own right. Her oeuvre of more than 400 compositions remained largely unknown for more than a century after her untimely death, and her newly rediscovered reputation as a composer rests chiefly with her piano music. This volume is the first American publication of her important early works. Reproduced directly from rare first editions, its contents include Vier Lieder für das Pianoforte, Op. 2, Op. 6, and Op. 8, in addition to two selections from Six Mélodies pour le Piano, Op. 4 and Op. 5. • A treasure of a discovery!
Format: Paperback
Nothing to dislike. Such wonderful music. I instantly felt akin to the music. By the same token, I fell entranced by her compositions immediately. Interesting that it took me years to appreciate her brother's compositions. Such different personalities, I believe.

  • Fanny Mendelssohn
Format: Paperback
Her music is beautiful, and she has been undeservedly obscure.

  • Much needed facsimiles
Format: Paperback
A nice selection of some of Fanny Hensel's most attractive pieces in facsimile prints. Several of these have been recorded, as well, already.

  • Beautiful music, subpar editing
Format: Paperback
While this is a beautiful collection of pieces that deserve to be heard much more often, there are numerous flaws in the editing that are quite surprising. There are incorrect chords, some with accidentals missing, others with a note misplaced to the adjacent line or space. (If it suddenly sounds like 20th century jazz, find some trusted recordings and compare.) The use of accidentals in general is very strange and inconsistent. Sometimes they are (oddly) meant to alter the pitch in all octaves for the measure, sometimes not. Numerous measures are misaligned between the hands, as in a note in the right hand is shown to the left of a left hand note that is meant to sound first. (Grab a pencil and get ready to draw arrows!) I give it 2 stars for the beauty of the music and the attention the collection gives to some long-ignored gems, but I wish more care had gone into the final product. ... show more

  • blurry hard to read music
Format: Paperback
The music is obviously not the issue. But it's murder to read. Be forewarned.
