I opened the package, pulled the folded cane out, undid the little Velcro strap, and -- bam -- the cane unfolded on its own and the three pieces lined up automatically. All I had to do was push them securely together. The cane is lightweight and sturdy and, if you're on a solid or flat surface (so, not grass or deep-pile carpet), it will stand up on its own when you're not using it. But the four-point foot is too small for it to be stable on it's own on uneven or soft surfaces. Mind you, it works fine for walking support when you go across uneven or soft surfaces but if you stop and let go of it, it will fall over like a regular cane. This a decent walking stick that is foldable for easy storage and comes with a storage bag. I would definitely consider this "light-duty" and would not put much weight on it. The foot at the base is also rather small so it should only be used on hard surfaces. It does look nice (I received a black one) and it functions well.
