Description

Saving the landscape, rebuilding entrepreneurial rural families, and protecting nutritious food are the themes of this timeless treatise-hence the word "testament." Delving into the soul of the Salatin family's nationally acclaimed Polyface Farm, author Joel Salatin offers Family Friendly Farming as the key to dealing with resource issues, food policy, and social fabric. With humor and personal stories, he opens his family and farm convictions for all to see, share, and enjoy. Written from his unabashed "Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist" perspective, his ideas are guaranteed to encourage and challenge virtually every "ism" in the culture. It will captivate anyone passionate about healing the land, healing families, and healing the food supply. For several decades young people have been leaving the family farm. The ones left behind are now responsible for society's greatest resources: clean land and clean food. Anyone dedicated to preserving these resources will find in these pages a nongovernmental, self-empowerment approach to environmentalism and food safety. The heart of this book is aimed toward parents tired of their Dilbert cubicle at the end of the expressway who want to reconnect with their children through a pastoral lifestyle. It's written for anyone who yearns to grow old working with and being adored by value-sharing grandchildren and honored by passionate, productive adult children. Family Friendly Farming can make any family business more viable and any family more functional. The ten-chapter section on how to get the kids to love the farm is an invaluable addition to any collection of child-rearing manuals. Salatin moves from the family team-building section into a practical discussion on how to increase income per acre and create new, white-collar salaries without buying more land, equipment, or buildings. He deals with the unique and thorny issues surrounding any family business by using his own multi-generational family farm experience as his base for insight and wisdom. Read more

  • one of the best books on generational wealth I’ve read.
Format: Kindle
Unconventional wisdom that should be conventional. How did we get it so backwards? Worth a read 2x or more. Get it.

  • Multi generational vision for family
Format: Paperback
This is a superb book on looking how we can live in community with others and build strong multi-generational vision for our families. Joel Salatin is funny, but to the point of problems with today's culture and modern hamster wheel lifestyle. This book will help you see how you can live in strong relationships with your children and other families. It will help you see how you can train your children to be hard workers, and enjoy the work. It will guide you to a more fulfilling life that you can share with future generations. The book is not a difficult read, but is full of many great ideas, and tips. It's a must read if you want to pursue an agrarian life, and even if you don't want to pursue an agrarian life. ... show more

  • This was such a great book. Like Joel Salatin's other books
Format: Paperback
This was such a great book. Like Joel Salatin's other books, the writing style comes off a bit abrasive but I appreciate it because I feel like he's being honest and saying how he really feels, which is refreshing in today's world. While I don't necessarily agree with every single thing he wrote in the book, I still learned a lot from reading it and will absolutely take the lessons from this book with me into my future endeavors. In fact, I couldn't put the book down and read the whole thing in a couple of days. While Salatin talks specifically about farming (because he is, in fact, a farmer), the principles and values discussed in the book can easily be applied to any cottage industry or family business. If you have a dream to create some sort of family business and pass that along to your children and grandchildren, then you absolutely need to read this book. ... show more

  • Great for parents
Format: Paperback
I'm looking to join in with some family members to start a farm and thought it would give me a lot of great tips. It did in fact give me things to consider but it was more geared towards parents farming with their children, which was still beneficial. It was a good read. A lot of common sense stuff, which isn't so common these days, but plenty of moments that make you go "ah ha". Definitely worth reading. ... show more

  • Inspirational & Biblically Sound.
Format: Paperback
Excellent perspective on farming. This book is very encouraging on the overall picture of why farm, family oriented goals and a holistic, economical approach. This is a concept book, not necessarily a nitty gritty, step by step, how to farm book (ie. building fences, barns, what breeds of animals work best. . . ) However the concepts are Biblically sounds and just need to be adapted to your given geography, and desires. ... show more

  • Amazing book!
Format: Paperback
If you judge a fish on it's ability to climb a tree... Joel salatin is a brilliant farmer and can debate with many well educated people. But he is not the best at writing books. So don't judge the book by lack of editing. Judge the book on the information that it is written about. I am forever grateful for the Salatin family in all that they have done and are doing! I am also grateful that Mr. Joel has written down about the family farm. Family businesses NEED to come back. Businesses need to morph and grow and change. Not everyone will stay with the family business but the wealth of knowledge passed down from generation to generation is a legacy our modern society has given up. It's a blessing! And small farms are needed everywhere in our country! ... show more
