  • powerful
Style: RAGE4 + Multi-Purpose Blade Pattern Name: Chop Saw
At 10 amps this little saw has a lot of power, it took me about an hour just to set up but once set up is all good. Overall, is a powerful saw that can cut through metal with ease. it comes with a general saw blade that cuts wood, plastic and soft metal. I decided to buy an extra saw blade that is specifically for metal use. That way the saw blade will last longer. i was surprised to see package comes with some spare safety glasses, as well as foam ear plugs as the machine is quite loud while in use. Safety Glasses and ear plugs was a good attention to detail. Overall this is a great little machine, however when using most important is you secure whatever you are cutting well, from the front end and the back end, because if not the item you are cutting can fly out. It happened to me, lesson learned. It performs nice straight cuts, so I'm happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Much nicer than an abrasive saw, but died after 3 months.
Style: RAGE4 + Multi-Purpose Blade Pattern Name: Chop Saw
Let's be clear: this is what I'd call a "cheap tool." It's build quality matches that of the better Harbor Freight power tools. When I bought it, it was the same price as the HFT equivalent, but Evolution has a pretty good reputation, so I took a chance. I was *very* surprised when it died after 3 months of moderate (< 2 hours/ week) use. For the time that it worked, it was pretty good. Far fewer sparks than an abrasive saw, and it cut faster and cleaner with a lot less heat. This is the primary reason I bought it, and I admit it delivered on that score. Accuracy is another matter. The base is made of thin sheet metal (about 1/16"), and flexes badly under the weight of the workpiece. There is no reinforcement underneath to keep the platform flat on either side of the blade opening. This leads to crooked cuts, or cuts that start straight but become crooked as the workpiece shifts. This wasn't too big a deal for me, since I usually oversize my cuts and then dress them to size on the bench grinder before welding, but that's not practical for every situation. A few days ago, I was cutting some tube stock and the thing began to bog down, with a lot of sparks and a bad burning smell coming from the motor. I tried replacing the brushes, but that didn't seem to help anything. Now I need to send it back, to hopefully be repaired under warranty. Not an ideal situation. This was my first Evolution product. I'll wait and see how they handle the warranty repair before I decide whether or not to purchase from them again, but it's not a great first impression. UPDATE: Evolution sent me a replacement that is still working six months later, so maybe I got a dud the first time. That said, it's still a cheap tool. ... show more

  • Replaces a Harbor Freight Horizontal Band Saw
Style: RAGE4 + Multi-Purpose Blade Pattern Name: Chop Saw
11-15-21: My initial thoughts are it is easy setup, portable, easy to operate, cuts better than expected. For testing I clamped this to a workbench (very important to secure temporarily or permanently) and trimmed up some 1 & 1-1/2 inch square tubing. First cuts were thin wall 1" tubing, using very light pressure and cut in 10 seconds or less (hard to believe). Next jumped to 1/8" wall 1-1/2" tubing (photos show it), realizing it may take longer, I only applied light pressure and to my amazement, it cut through in 20-30 seconds. Last cut was a 45 degree cut on the 1-1/2" tubing, which went extremely well. The photo of the angle cut shows precision of the cut. Comparing to a bandsaw: Precision will be trickier on this saw, time to cut about 10% of band saw, less mess. Bandsaw from Harbor Freight now $300 with taxes and need to build a portable cart for it. Cutting with a chop saw is a new experience, but this will out-perform the bandsaw. Could I put one of these blades on an expensive Mitre Saw and have dual functionality and better clamping? Yes, but I think it is risky, but maybe worth trying on a cheap used one 1st. Keeping that in mind, I could build a wheeled portable bench for this saw and it would have clamping / leveling features. Conclusion: Yes I will keep it and probably build the portable bench on wheels. Once you have power tools on wheels, functionality improves immensely. This review will be updated as I enhance my workspace and cutting. ... show more

  • Good but weird trigger placement
Style: RAGE4 + Multi-Purpose Blade Pattern Name: Chop Saw
Brought this to cut timber and artificial decking materials. It performed well, nice sharp blade, accurate cuts, no wobble or wandering. My only issue is the weird placement of the trigger safety. The blade is on the right, the cut channel is on the right, the motor, handle and trigger on the left and the safety push button is on the left of the handle. Situated for depression by your thumb... So if you use your right hand, index finger on the trigger and thumb on the safety, you can't hold the off cut when you cut! But if you use your left hand, leaving right hand to steady and hold the off cut, your thumb is on the wrong side of the handle to depress the safety! You have to use your pinky finger on the safety to work it and have your right hand free to use. Took for or five cuts to get it figured out, but got used to it. Safety should be on the right for your left thumb to press. So good value saw - silly trigger design! - but works when you adapt. ... show more
