  • Very sharp cutoff low beam pattern!
Size: Passenger & Driver Side (Left & R...
This headlight cluster fit our 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i, well. The reflectors behind especially the low beam bulbs in the original clusters had deteriorated / discolored due to heat from the halogen bulbs*, resulting in very weak, orangish colored low beams, a problem that had seemed to accelerate late last summer.* Once installed and properly aimed, the new clusters are PLENTY bright, with a very sharp top-of-beam low beam cutoff: In many hours of "night" driving with the low beams on, no one has "flashed" us with THEIR lights. The top-of-beam low beam cutoff is the best I have ever seen and unless my memory is completely shot, better than even the low beams when the car was new. I don't know if Subaru upgraded the spec at some point and the mfgr. followed that, or if the apparent improvement was from the manufacturer's initiative (could be - these are made in Taiwan and some Taiwanese companies will make "tweaky" product improvements on their own initiative... A couple minor cons: 1) As received, the beams were poorly aimed - by quite a bit. Granted that anyone doing a cluster replacement should know how and where to point the low beams, but, still, brief instructions and a simple diagram would be well advised. 2) In fact, there were no instructions, warranty card, or any other kind of info. / paperwork from the seller / mfgr. in or on the package. The tiny almost too small to read sales slip from Amazon was "it". One gets more than this if one buys a simple Sylvania (for example) replacement bulb. 3) The light pattern to the sides of the high beams is somewhat (more uneven) "wonky" compared to the factory clusters. (The old high beams were still working well.) This is not really a problem, but, seems curious, given how much I like the new low beams. Not really a "con" -- It remains to be seen how quickly these replacement clusters will deteriorate. If they last 10 years I'll be pretty happy! *Note: I have a strong suspicion that leaving the low beams on in hot weather, especially if the car is not rolling or a breeze blowing, may result in heat buildup around the bulbs that discolors the reflective material near the bulbs. Once that starts, the dimished reflectivity surface will absorb even more heat, causing more and / or worse discoloration, causing... Sort of a feedback mechanism stopping only when the area discolored (or contiguous material) is large enough to dissipate incoming heat as fast as it arrives. So... A word to the wise may be to be very careful to NOT use your low beams on clear days during the day, esp. in warm / hot / calm weather if you may be stopped at a long stop light, and so on. And don't use them to illuminate your campsite / fishing hole, etc., for long periods. Our 2009 Outback has perfectly good DRL's with the headlights in the nominally "off" position: Rely on those whenever possible / safe during sunlit hours. IF near-point-source LED replacement headlamp bulbs approved by the DOT become available, perhaps they would mitigate this heat problem. However, I'm told none have been approved yet. DON'T use unapproved LED headlamp bulbs in automobile headlamps, period. They will not provide a good cutoff, annoying if not blinding other drivers, and increasing risk to all. ... show more
