  • A cheap machine for espresso pods or hacking. Not a great machine for espresso.
TLDR: If you're looking for a slim, cheap POD espresso machine. It's eh, ok. It makes sort of "espresso like" shots with pods. If you're looking for a cheap "espresso" machine, it's a nope. DeLonghi Stilosa, EC100 or Capresso EC100 aren't fantastic, but they faire better in this price range. To preface, I have experience with espresso machines both cheap and expensive but I am not one of those people who says you need to spend a ton of money to obtain decent drinkable daily espresso shots or for use in cappuccinos etc. It's drinkable coffee vs snobby coffee. Things like Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista make under 200 bucks on sale usable shots. I bought this machine to see what else is out there in this price bracket and figured I would gift it or hack it after I played around with it. It's clearly designed to mimic a Delonghi Dedica. There are a couple machines on Amazon that have this same design. They probably all have the same internal parts with a different housing. Up sides: #1: It has a partial stainless housing. That's good. #2: It's cheap on sale. #3: It works "ok" for espresso pods. #4: It doesn't leak so far. #5: It has both manual/automatic runtime modes. (Hold the button for manual runtime.) #4: As a base for hacks, it's not bad because it looks ok on the counter. Down sides: #1: The machine is very light, and it takes a lot of force to remove the portafilter. It's narrow, so you might rock the machine around trying to get the portafilter in and out. Not a super big problem, but could be for someone older with arthritis. Don't put cups on top, they may go flying. The cup warmer doesn't really work anyway so no point unless you're doing it for looks. #2: The bayonet (the bracket that holds the portafilter to the machine) is plastic. Not a huge deal. Lots of machines in this price bracket and even some more expensive machines from Delonghi etc have plastic bayonets. Those are made of nylon reenforced plastic though. This is appears to be ABS plastic so it may break over time. #3: The portafilter handle is super cheap. If it's not attaching, you've got it inserted wrong. Don't force it, else you will for sure break it. You can just get another 51mm 3 prong portafilter though. Mine works. #4: The tank has no handle to lift for refilling and it's small and semi slippery. If you have dexterity problems this is a recipe for throwing water all over the place. I suggest leaving it in until you need to clean it, and just pouring water into the top. The lid is also weird to remove and put back on. What you would think is the tab for the lid, is there to help lift the container off the machine. #5: There is no "float" in the spill tray to let you know how much water is in the overspill. Not a lot of cheap machines have one. Would be nice though, it's a 15 cent part. Keep an eye on it, and empty it after using the machine. #6: It ejects about 2tbsp hot water before steam, but that's common on cheap machines. #7: It ejects some water at the end of the pressure cycle, leaving water in the basket. However, no machine at this price has a 3 way valve that I know of. #8: It has a pressurized portafilter like every other sub $400 machine. The pump doesn't have enough pressure to push the water through, and at the end, there will always be water in the basket, even if you use a 51mm unpressurized basket. My universal 51mm 3 prong portafilter and 51mm basket both fit the machine so that's great! The basket still had water in it at the top, but it did successfully extract the grounds properly from the puck. #9: The boiler must be SMALL. It does heat fast because of that, but getting hot water out of the wand will take you over a minute for a small americano. It seems to heat properly. Don't bother with it for tea. Get a kettle. Unless you live in a dorm and only have this. #10: It's like all cheap machines, and it's not quiet. Espresso machines under 500 aren't quiet. #11: Steam. The steam is alright, but it doesn't output a steady. You will get larger bubbles for cappuccino / latte, but don't expect to make a flat white. UPDATE: While moving the machine this morning, I noticed a fine spittle of dried coffee around it. So it appears that there is some amount of spray coming from it. :( I've tested the machine with an open, unpressurized basket. TBH, it works a little better with the unpressurized basket, however I just can't get a decent extraction out of this machine no matter what I do. The Mr Coffee Cafe Barista and the Stilosa I have access to just extract so much better. I've tried a bunch of different combinations, grinds, tamping pressures etc, and it just won't do it. Again, pods do work better than grounds in this machine and those came out "alright", however grounds come out like strong coffee, not espresso. The "crema" you get isn't real crema. It's aerated coffee caused by spray from the portafilter design. I also unscrewed the screen and clipped about 2mm off the release spring with rubber grommet inside. This does seem to help with extraction a tiny bit because it releases some of the initial buildup of pressure spray, that causes divots to burrow into the grounds. Really, unless you're using pods and know what you're getting into I really can't recommend this machine. Machines like a DeLonghi 680 can be found second hand for like $35 bucks more, or other cheap machines like EC100 or Stilosa at $99 or under while not perfect, extract better. I gave it a fair whack. :( ... show more

  • Puck always wet
Works ok but water collects in the puck no matter what I do. I have tried different grounds, it does not solve the problem.

  • Good for the price
The media could not be loaded. It serves it's purpose. Most parts including the porta filter handle are plastic. It extracts pretty good quality expresso. Steamer feature is very nice too.

  • I packed it and took it on vacation. I love this.
I was a batista for ages and love straight espresso on ice. I'm tired of buying ut elsewhere. I couldn't justify the cost of a full on machine and debated a lot of ways I could scratch the itch. I would prefer a fully manual machine that was a little more like a standard manual commercial machine, but I'm not trying to spend that kind of money. During Prime weeks his was on sale and honestly it was so compelling I pulled the trigger. It's a performer and has far surpassed my initially low expectations. The size is perfect. It takes up hardly any counter space. The draw is long and the cremation is nice and golden. I've steamed oat and cow milk, producing a nice wet foam (my preference) after getting used to using it a few times. Maybe in the far future I'll upgrade and then retire this beauty to be my raodtrip traveling machine. Already took it on vacation and it was the best decision I've made in some time. ... show more

  • Good espresso with nice crema
The espresso machine is really nice, makes tasty espresso with awesome crema. I love getting up in the morning and enjoy a cup of this nicely tasting espresso! The only issue is that the lid of the water tank is not very easy to lift. Other than that I would totally recommend the machine - also for the price. Unfortunately, the first device broke after 2 month of usage. However, I had no issue in replacing it. I just hope that the second one will not break again. ... show more

  • Awesome Little Espresso Machine!
I don't write many reviews, but when I purchased this machine during Prime Day it didn't have any reviews and I was hesitant about buying it, so I researched the company, and decided to give a try. I was replacing an old Hamilton Beach cappuccino machine I had been using for 15 years and loved, partly because it had a small footprint on my counter, but it had begun to leak. This little machine is so cute and makes a really good cappuccino in short order. with 15 bars it produces a really nice crema and the milk frother produces a an airy, hot milk. I am using half as much milk and getting twice as much froth. It is more lightweight than my old espresso machine, as it has more plastic, but I don't mind it since it does work well. A couple of small annoyances, the selection knob doesn't click into place and so you need to make sure it is lined up with the action that you want. Also the water reservoir isn't as conveniently located as my old machine, being located in the back instead of the side. Otherwise awesome little machine that has improved my morning coffee experience! ... show more

... show more
