  • Frustrating... You may want to avoid this one
If you're reading this review and have checked out the DVD details you no doubtedly know who Eric Johnson is and know that he is simply the most amazing guitarist living or dead. Good news and bad news about this instructional video. Good news: this is the entire VHS copy (with an awesome transfer of video and audio) plus they broke out the lessons in normal and 1/2 speed which you can set (with the DVD menus) to repeat over and over until you figure it out and play it smoothly. Eric also does a great job explaining in detail what he wants to teach you while showing it. Bad news: after attempting to play what Eric Johnson plays so effortlessly you may soon realize that you're not as good as you once thought you were! May make you want to quit and take up something like origami. Or, this DVD could make you want to practice twice as much and pick up the signature Eric Johnson Strat and try to achieve his clean, pure tone and playing style. This DVD will show you his playing styles, how he gets his tone, lots of lessons on many styles of playing, we get to watch and listen to a couple of complete original songs (not found anywhere else), and watch Eric show lots of techniques he used on Ah Via Musicom (which hadn't been released when the tape was made) and Tones. Eric is simply friggin' amazing and for the first time, you get to sit with him and have him explain the stuff that makes him unique. I highly suggest it to people who want to improve at playing guitar (all styles) as well as Eric Johnson fans who just appreciate his ability and want to see him in a private setting with just him solo with he strat. Every time I see Eric Johnson play, I realize how much I have yet to learn. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes out with an instructional piano video as well after seeing his live acoustic tour a couple years ago. Thanks Eric... you are amazing. And this video shows that. ... show more

  • Love it.
The performances are amazing, and the lessons, very useful, but NOT for the novice guitarist. They're hard folks, for anybody. And I'm personally of the opinion that when you take on something difficult, whether you actually achieve that thing or not, you will have learned. And for me, not learning is only for when I'm playing professionally so much that there's no time to for woodshedding. But whether you end up copping Eric's style of fret boarding or not (few, myself included, will), you'll like this DVD. At the very least, it gives you insight into how somebody as good at what they do as Eric and, has managed to keep it accessible to the public ear, approaches their craft. I think that's very important in the development of your own style and approach to the instrument. ... show more

  • A Guitar God Speaks
Eric sits there and calmly dishes up the basis for his playing style. Like it is no big deal... You need to be an advanced player to appreciate what he is explaining and demonstrating. Eric is so good he makes most of what he does look easy, but as you sit down with the transcriptions (which are impossible to read on screen) and start to play through them you realize VERY quickly a great deal of time is going to go into learning all of these lessons. Hint, I scanned the rather small pages of the book and reprinted them large enough that I could easily read them. I like this on DVD, I can stop the action and take a careful look at his hand/finger positions. Even in slow motion some of the fingering is tricky to follow. If you want to learn from the master this is it. ... show more

  • Cool Watch, but a Challenge When Practicing
I originally got this on VHS when it first came out and I found the video to be very informative and educational and had recently re-bought is on DVD for something to practice with. I eventually became a hardcore student in both country and jazz guitar, but I am a rocker at heart, so I eventually went back to this video. Eric Johnson explains in his own way how the electric guitar is played in rock, blues, jazz, and country and goes even further into how he does those Lenny Brough style harmonics. However I would only recommend this video if you've been playing electric guitar non-stop for at least 1-2 years if not more (This is NOT a beginner guitar video). The pro to this video is the 'slow-down' option when used during practice so that you have a better idea of what Johnson is playing, especially those super fast leads. ... show more

  • Great instructional dvd
I've been using this dvd for a few months and I can feel a huge improvement in my playing. He explains all his techniques, his influences and his approach to chords and lead in great detail. He explains his "bounce" technique. circle picking, dampening, finger - picking, wes montgomery style, hybrid picking and his approach left hand fingering. Because of this, my tone and technique have greatly improved. He plays leads and rhythm in the style of players like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and explains how they influenced his own style. In the end he shows different types of harmonics. There are some great solo performances through the dvd as well. If you want to get more into his style I suggest that you also get The Fine Art of the Guitar. I highly recommend this dvd. ... show more
