  • Very smooth way to have a sit / stand desk
Size: No Worksurface Color: Black
The elevation mechanism on this is very smooth. Note that there are two degrees of vertical freedom; the entire keyboard and monitor assembly moves up as a unit, but you can also adjust the height between the keyboard and monitors separately. They were thinking on that one, because I find that relationship changes whether you sit or stand. Everything has adjustable counter-balance screws that work well, so this is a finger touch system. The monitors can be easily shifted left or right in relation to each other, up to the maximum extent of the support arm. I use 2 smaller monitors, which gave me some flexibility here. With a 2-monitor stand like this, you have to be comfortable "looking left or right". Otherwise, go with the single monitor version. There is no "tilt" adjustment on the monitors, which I don't find to be a problem. Others may. I wonder a bit why they didn't add a bit of adjustment there, although much of what they did seems to be driven by the standard OSHA workplace recommendations... which will tell you you pretty much should put your monitor where these folks put it for you. The desk mounting is simple, secure and very stable. When elevated, if you tend to pound on keys or rest your weight on the keyboard shelf, there may be some slight screen vibration as other reviewers have noted, but it is minimal. The only way I see to avoid this completely is either a separate screen & keyboard lift device, or something more massive. The sit/stand tables from Varidesk might be a bit better in this regard, but they fit somewhat different requirements. On the downside, the distance between your eye and keyboard is fixed (at about an arms length) within the small bit of room you have in placing the keyboard on the rather deep keyboard tray. At first this bothered me, but I realized with some research I actually had been using my monitor too close to the screen, and that causes eyestrain. Which I definitely was having. So I have surrendered to the greater distance and have started to adjust to it, and my eyes seem to be thanking me. Again, the Varidesk solution gives you more flexibility there, as you can move your monitor where you will on the worksurface. The keyboard tray folds up, which is meant to give you a bit more "chair room" in front of the desk when not using the computer, but of course to use that feature the keyboard must be fixed, and they provide Velcro for that purpose. Your mouse will fall off of course. The mouse tray is a bit on the small side, but I use a trackball and it is perfect. My setup has a mini-keyboard, the trackball to the right, and a separate keypad to the right of that attached to the mouse tray. All attached with Velcro. If you haven't tried a trackball then try one.. they are perfect for a sit / stand station. Construction and packaging are excellent. This is a quality product. Before you buy this unit go over to the Erogotron web site, as they have a range of products like this... others may fit your needs better, if at a higher price point. In comparison, this unit replaced a system based on two elevating monitor stands and a separate keyboard stand, which was just too slow to re-adjust. I was looking for something that I could change back and forth several times a day. I have a friend with the Varidesk system, and have played with that a bit. It is also is very well built. I would rank it as a bit more "flexible" in how you position components, especially with the Pro Plus model. You can grab your monitor and swing it around to show a visitor, for example. However, it takes more desk space... and it takes slightly more "mental energy" to deploy. I know that sounds silly, but with the Ergotron, you just slide your chair back and give it a gentle shove... you are not elevating or dropping a table with several components bouncing around on it. In the end both seem to be quality solutions for a sit/stand workstation. ... show more

  • Unit Broken
Size: No Worksurface Color: Black
The unit like others had the pulley system broken outside of warranty period and company has no way to fix without buying a new unit. Do some research and you will find this is common for ergotron so I'd go elsewhere. There is also a YouTube video on how to fix for others in the same situation. I'd go with a different option now that I know these are destined to fail without any option to repair from the manufacturer. ... show more

  • Relatively good, but it's too short
Size: No Worksurface Color: Black
In general, I like this product. Having the flexibility to stand and sit during my work day has vastly improved my comfort. However, the monitors jiggle a bit as I type. That can be a bit distracting. It's also too short. I'm 6' and even when the monitors are at maximum height, they are still not at eye level. If you are tall, this is not the right standing desk for you. ... show more

  • Solid engineering (after 1 month), setup pretty easy
Size: No Worksurface Color: Black
I decided I wanted stand-up desk to improve my health for two reasons: 1) there's some evidence that working out each day--hard enough to do as that is--doesn't compensate very much for sitting down at a desk all day; and 2) it stands to reason (no pun intended) that being on your feet helps your blood circulate more quickly through your brain and make you more intelligent while you're doing work on a computer. I looked into everything from the $1,000+ desks that rise and lower with a motor, to a DIY platform using InterMetro shelves. This was the best solution I came up with for my cubicle-like situation. At home, I have a secretary desk and put a yellow pages (yes, they still exist) as a platform for my laptop to get the same experience. Pluses: * Set up is reasonably easy. You'll need someone to help you (to hold the monitors while you fasten them to the workstation) but I got everything set up in about an hour and had no compatibility issues with my Dell monitors of one- and four-year-old vintages. * The raise and lower feature is nice as you're getting used to standing (you might feel sore or tired for days #2-4 if you stand up all day). I've only used it for a month so I can't speak too much to quality but the system seems well-engineered (Ergotron's primary customers seem to be hospitals, who are probably more demanding on quality than consumers) and raising and lowering is a matter of pushing moderately. * It just feels solidly built overall. At height, it doesn't have a latch to hold it at a particular level but there is still no wobbling or tilting. Minuses: * You may still wish that you could have your papers at the same height as your keyboard. * Taming the cables takes some trial and error in my experience and it's never going to look especially tidy. The box includes some zip ties but I recommend getting some reuseable (with a tab to release) ones to allow for experimentation. * You will look strange to some colleagues when you're standing up and I think you should consider if you have low cubicle walls whether this is worth it. * You will need to look closely at the dimensions to make sure it works for your situation. It goes back a little ways and at height may block cubicle cabinets. ... show more
