  • It has issues, but it’s really good-looking
Size: Right Handed
This guitar is very beautiful, but not without issues. Aside from the usual setup & intonation, you’ll need to file the fret-ends and buy a set of pot nuts to lower the knob height. If you plan on using a fuzz/dist/overdrive pedal, there’s no way around it - you’ll need to replace the pickups. Here are the 3 main problems & their solutions: 1) The Neck: The biggest problem is the neck. Most likely due to cold, dry storage and shipping, mine had aggressive fret sprout, and the neck had a slight back-bow even with the truss rod fully loosened. It was very discouraging at first but after being in 55% humidity in my warm studio overnight, the fret sprout has backed off a bit, and I now have some relief on the neck - albeit with the truss rod torqued counter-clockwise against the headstock to gently force it straight. Fortunately the frets are perfectly level so it only needs a fret-end filing. After setup & intonation it plays as good as a Fender Player, with no fret buzz. 2) The P90s: They’re unplayably noisy through distortion, so I replaced them with the Seymour Duncan Silencer vintage set. The SD Silencers are by far the best sounding pickups I’ve ever heard - rich, beautiful P90 sound, zero noise. Now it’s a guitar. 3) Pots: Lucious, long-shaft CTS-type pots, wired properly, but installed with only one nut so the knobs stick up almost 1/4” above the body (seriously) so I ordered a set of 3/8” nuts to set them right. Nothing else needs to be upgraded. The bridge and tuners are crazy excellent, the output jack is pro-level solid, and good Lord above, the paint job is breathtakingly beautiful. The headstock & inlay are a chef’s kiss. The wiring is spaghetti, but the solder joints are all perfect so all is forgiven. The tone cap leads are each shrink-tubed nicely to prevent shorts, and the tone sweep sounds so good I’m not going to bother swapping them for orange-drops. Overall a great guitar. I’m not thrilled about how not one video review seems to be willing to point out the glaring neck issues and the lack of adjustment on the pots, or at least explain & demonstrate the drawbacks of the P90’s archaic technology. Epiphone dropped the ball, but it’s understandable because if the neck was made properly and the pots were installed right, no one would shell out two grand for the Gibson ;) Update: I ended up swapping out all the remaining electronics with a switchcraft, solid 22-gauge wire, a set of TAOT 525k CTS long shafts and a kill-pot, and a pair of Emerson .022uf yellow caps - but the tuners are keepers. The neck is behaving itself, and for reasons that can’t be explained it’s remained perfectly straight - albeit with the truss rod still reverse-torqued. For the finishing touch I cut a custom pickguard out of 1/4” thick translucent orange acrylic. I see what they mean now, after some TLC it’s essentially a personal custom Gibson LP Special with a minor, fixable neck issue, for less than half the price. ... show more

  • Quality Control VS. Luck Of The Draw?
Size: Right Handed
I'm wanting a Les Paul Special with P90's for some time now. When I came across this new Inspired by Gibson model with so many positive features and reviews, I had to have one! It arrived quickly and in great shape. Truly a handsome guitar, I was very pleased with the color. Nice design. Quite comfortable, medium weight, so far all good. Tune and play! Well. Hmmm. The strings are literally on the fret board! The neck was slightly reverse bowed. No problem. A slow half turn to loosen the truss rod put it right. Intonation was pretty darn good for a wrap tail bridge. I noticed the alignment of the neck to bridge was slightly off, so the strings favored the top (Low E side), which also left the strings not centered over the pickups. This issue was minor, but noticeable. Oh those Frets!!! I scraped my finger tip on a sharp fret end. They were flush with the neck's edge, but too sharp! Then the Buzz. I couldn't dial it out. I checked the frets to find they were not level. Not even close. This guitar needed fret work. Game over. Guitar returned. That Vintage V132 sure is looking good... ... show more
