If the Epiphone doesn't suit you I would recommend giving Eastman guitars a shot. Their J-45 styles come in solid mahagony or rosewood and REALLY sing out. They'll run between $1300 - $1700. They can be found on sale if you're patient.

  • Look like a Gibson but sounds like a $350 Epiphone.

The good news…It looks good and has mastered the appearance of a Gibson J-45. A bit heavier of course than the real thing and the sound is more tinny and buzzy like an Epiphone might be than that signature Gibson warmth. If this is your price range and you dream of the Gibson, buy it and be happy. It is fun to hold and it might be perfect for you if not recording anything with it. If you are looking for a better sound, some of the entry Martins like the X series Natural will be more of a treasure for that price point and you should compare them before committing. I noticed a couple great sounding Yamahas also that made the Epiphone J-45 seem like a far lesser built instrument for about the same amount of money. As with anything, each guitar can sound different and my experience was with one guitar only from Epiphone. There could be better sounding ones out there. ... show more
