This instrument has a clear, bell tone. It is a snap to learn if you have had some experience with a keyboard. I was playing with both hands and making chords the very first day. Besides arriving damaged, it also sounded like a kids toy. Notes were clearly out of tune. Some of the top row rests on the bottom row. Just not worth it.

    • A Decent Instrument For Students and Beginners
I bought this instrument as a gift for a loved one who already plays some limited percussion. She has found it a good instrument for beginning to play, for learning how to manage the mallets and pluck out a simple tune in the high register. As her playing continues to improve, she is likely to outgrow this model within a year or two; but at the beginning stage, this is a good starter instrument. The keys are a tin alloy that has a clear, bell-like resonance, and the notes, especially at the lower end, carry well and fill up a room. Its keys are laid out like a piano, so if your student has any piano background, they should be able to find the correct note easily. It has a foldable wooden frame, allowing it to fit neatly in the accompanying soft-sided gig case, so your student can transport it to rehearsals or recitals with ease. At the very high end, the top five or six notes don't resonate like the rest of the instrument, and produce somewhat leaden notes. Don't pick songs that linger at the top of the register. And the accompanying mallets are made of injection-molded plastic, with visible mold seams; one arrived with a significant bend in the handle. Your student will outgrow these mallets very quickly, so be prepared to shop for replacements. Basically, if you have a budding percussionist in your family, who needs a tuned instrument on which to learn, this is a good practice model. It stores and transports easily, and the sound resonates like a bell. It is emphatically not a concert instrument, but at these prices, that probably isn't a surprise. Your player will enjoy this instrument, and learn from it, until it's time to graduate to the next level. ... show more
