    • Bought This for the Adapter - Works Fine
I've been playing a lot of Phantasy Star II on the Sega Genesis Mini 2, and I got to thinking about how odd it was that the ASCII Grip line of controllers never had a Genesis version. I mean, it could arguably be the perfect take on that controller design, assuming you only wanted three action buttons and a Start button. That said, I decided to do whatever it took to get either the PlayStation or SNES versions of the ASCII Grip working on Phantasy Star II. That's where this controller...err, I mean, adapter comes in. For some reason, I was having a really hard time finding a simple SNES to USB controller adapter, but I seemed to have no problem finding PlayStation to USB controller adapters. Alas, the PlayStation adapters didn't work at all, as nothing I plugged them into could detect the button presses for the ASCII Grip (though official PlayStation controllers worked fine). As such, I had to give the SNES ASCII Pad a shot somehow, so I ended up buying this controller and adapter set, as well as Hyperkin's SNES to SNES Classic Edition controller adapter (which you can find by searching for B075RMYMNH on Amazon). I'm so glad I bought these two adapters, as they work together perfectly for adapting an SNES controller to work with anything that supports standard DirectInput controllers. Alas, this means this setup doesn't work with my Sega Genesis Mini 2, but it DOES work with my MiSTer, as well as with Windows. Here's how the buttons on an SNES controller map to DirectInput: B = 1 A = 2 Y = 3 X = 4 L = 5 R = 6 Select = 9 Start = 10 It seems to skip buttons 7 and 8, though I seem to recall a lot of DirectInput controllers mapping Select and Start to buttons 9 and 10 in some sad attempt to "standardize" DirectInput control schemes, which is funny when you consider how inconsistent DirectInput controller mappings tend to be. That said, if you pay attention to the button mapping order, then you'll notice it at least mostly follows the button layout and mapping associated with XInput, which means your controller mapping should be mostly right (in terms of layout, not in terms of button labels) for games that support both and map the buttons in order. Well, it's time I contemplate whether I really want to start over in Phantasy Star II so I can play it on MiSTer. Without save states. And doing all that level- and money-grinding. Again. Ugh. Anyway, this product works, so I do suggest picking one up, whether it's to use SNES-compatible controllers on SNES Classic Edition or (by purchasing another adapter) with devices that support DirectInput controllers. ... show more

    • Spectacular Adapter - Fun Strategy Guide Pack In - Weak Pad
I purchased this because it was the cheapest option for converting SNES Classic controllers to USB for PC. For that it works great. The included controller is only of 'okay' quality. Compared to the official controller it has a huge number of ghost/accidental diagonal inputs on the d-pad. This is a common issue with controllers in this price range and I expected it. You still could do worse for the money though. One thing I did not expect was the pack-in cheat/strategy guide. It is high quality and a huge throwback to the kinds of guides you would find in the magazine section as a kid. Extremely charming. I would have paid $5 just for it! Overall for the price you're getting a usb adapter for the SNES Classic controller which simply works, as well as a fun strategy guide for games included in the SNES Classic in the style of a guide from back in the 90's, as well as a cheap usable but not recommended SNES controller with turbo functions. ... show more

    • A so-so "meal" with excellent "dessert"
Like a lot of others, I bought this for the adapter, which works excellently with my official SNES Classic controller. I wasn't able to notice any input delay compared to my Xbox controller while using an SNES emulator. As for Clone Hero, it worked fine after setting it up but I couldn't seem to get some features to work like the analog or whammy bar. (NOTE! You'll need a USB extension cable unless you like playing your guitar 5 inches from your PC.) As for the controller itself, it's... Ok. For the most part it feels fantastic. Great build quality! This thing could almost pass for an official controller. Nice, responsive buttons that don't feel terrible to press. Has a nice weight to it overall; No cheap plastic garbage here. Unfortunately, The controller has one flaw. The D-pad. If you don't press hard enough, it wont register input, or will register an incorrect direction. In Super Punch-Out for instance, I found myself missing dodges (D-pad left/right) or dodging when I wanted to punch upward (D-pad up). This is an occasional thing, but an irritating one nevertheless, which really stinks, considering how great the rest of the controller is. More tech-literate types could probably fiddle with the hardware to get it to make better contact but I dunno... For me, the most interesting part of the package was neither of the items mentioned above, but the "Cheat Codes" book. A 27 page book featuring tips and tricks (some of which are actually useful) for the 21 games featured in the SNES Classic. For a retro enthusiast like myself, this was awesome! High quality print and colorful original artwork that looks straight out of a classic issue of Nintendo Power. For me it was well worth the $8 sale price for this booklet alone. All in all, this was a great package, just not for the main attraction. Controller: [4/10] Passable if you need an occasional player 2 remote, but I wouldn't bother if you don't need the adapter. Adapter: [8/10] Short cable, but a good Raphnet alternative. Lacks a few small features. Collectible Booklet: [10/10] Fantastic collector's piece! ... show more
