  • No pet immunity in TEST mode, but that's okay.
Style: Z-Wave Configuration: Single
I am trying to save everyone some time by writing this. Here's the thing. With this Ecosense detector, there's three modes (set easily via jumper/pin): pet 1 (small pets), pet 2 (large pets), and test mode (which eliminates the 4 min delay). The thing is, **WHEN IT'S IN TEST MODE, THERE IS NO PET IMMUNITY** (yes, you heard right). You can't have pet immunity without the 4 min delay, at least on this unit anyways. Basically, how I see it, is if you don't want the 4 minute delay, just buy Samsung's Smartthings motion detectors since the battery will probably last longer (since this thing in Test mode will run down the battery). I know I might sound Pro-Samsung but I promise this is just the truth. However, if you DO want pet immunity, then buy this Ecosense detector, because the only way to do it with Samsung's are to place them high up where it won't "see" your pets. However, I feel the need to note that even with ST motion detectors, it's possible to place them higher to avoid pets, and you're gonna have to do that anyway with this one somewhat, but Ecosense's motion detectors pet immunity feature does work, but then you have the 4 min delay as long as pet immunity is on, and that's what you must understand. Basically, how I see it, this will cover a broader area and not detect pets. It's good to have both, I guess, for different areas. Some people who reviewed said the pet immunity feature doesn't work, but it definitely does (as long as it's not in Test mode), and I can tell because my cats definitely do not set it off in Pet 1 mode, although I haven't rigorously tested it yet. Even if this does alert me only every 4 minutes, at least I know that the detection isn't because of my cats, for example. I currently have the Ecosense in my living room where my cats will most likely to be, and it seems to be working out (In Test mode, though, they'll set it off everytime). I knew there'd be a drawback, and I guess this is it, although it could be a lot worse. Just wish I could have the best of both worlds with pet immunity and no 4 minute delay, but hey, this is good enough. I don't know why people said this was cheaper, also, since it was practically the same $30 as the Samsung Smartthings motion detectors (or any other). Installation is pretty much the same as with any Smartthings device, also, except inclusion mode had to be activated via the pinhole on back of unit (at least for me anyway), after activating inclusion mode on my SmartHub (obviously). Do NOT install the mounting bracket unless you KNOW exactly where you want it, also. You can't remove the unit or unscrew the screws from the bracket once it's mounted, and really can't even open the unit. Some people saw this as an upside, but I don't really see it as one (maybe if you have kids). I'd like to note that the piece that locks the motion detector in place could be broken off so the unit is removable, and no longer like this. Other than the 4 minute delay and pet immunity, it's pretty much the same as ST motion sensor. Not to sound negative, but I feel like Ecosense should advertise that it's an either/or choice between pet immunity and the 4 min delay. Still giving 5 stars because I feel like it does offer functionality (pet immunity) not offered by the ST's motion detector. ... show more

  • Easy to pair to Ezlo zwave controller
Style: Z-Wave Configuration: Single
Easy to pair and mount on wall. Can vary sensitivity. Can disarm these while not needed. A different ecolink model motion detector purchased 8 years ago is still functional so hopefully this model will also reliable

  • Great after you learn the caveats
Style: Z-Wave Plus Configuration: Single
These have been great after some caveats that were more just learning and trial and error on my behalf. We have two cats and these do not pick them up, as long as you mount them up high (and put a jumper over the pins for small or medium pet as it shows in the documentation). At first I was mounting them next to a light switch and if you have animals that jump up on the counter and pass right in front of it they will set it off no matter what the setting. After much trial and error I learned the best place to put them is up high in the corner. We have 9 foot ceilings and they don't have a problem. We do have a pretty large kitchen and I finally gave up and used two to cover the whole thing. I highly recommend 3M picture hanging strips with the plastic velcro. This will help you find the perfect placement without damaging the walls. I did see another gentleman's comment that 12 foot is probably too high. Additionally if they seem too slow, blame your zwave controller first. Especially Smart Things. I spent about 8 months with a Smart Things hub. For the most part I liked it. It was easy to use and design your system. But I ultimately stopped using it because it is not fast enough to use motions sensors to turn on lights. If you are happy using the smart lighting smart app to always turn on the light with motion with very few conditions, then it all stays on the controller. But if you use a community developed app and you notice the light blink on the motion sensor but your lights don't turn on until you get across the room, it is likely because your controller is sending everything to the cloud to evaluate conditions and waiting for a response back. For geeks like me you'll never be satisfied with the built in apps and all the community developed apps, I found out late in the game, always run from the cloud in Smart Things. The promise of the v2 hub was that things were supposed to run locally, but only apps that Samsung decides are worthy to include. For most things, not a big deal, but not for motion sensors if you are using them to control night lights. Also a lot of people complain about how long it takes for the motion sensor to reset and detect motion again. Just put another jumper on the TEST pins. This is supposed to be for testing and they claim it drains battery, but I'm satisfied with the battery life so far. The default setting resets after something like 4 minutes. This is ok for occupancy sensing for security, but if you are using it to turn on night lights and don't want to keep them on for 5 minutes jumper test and it resets quite quickly. The non-standard batteries are a bummer, but I think they are a trade off for longevity and size. ... show more
