I don't have that much experience with bongos but it does sound like a bongo. It is not harsh like a toy. just be mindful that the body is made of metal and the rubber feet can be easily removed. A child might pick the rubber feet and become a choking hazard. If you remove the rubber feet the threads will be exposed and could potentially be a cutting hazard. ... show more

This was purchased for a birthday present to my son. It looks great it's a nice weight and was very well built the only complaint I have is it doesn't exactly sound the way it should. Doesn't seem to make a difference to him though.
