  • Exactly what I need
Color: Nickel
I purchased the nickel-plated Eastar Pocket Trumpet to keep my embouchure in shape while traveling. I've had the horn for a week now, and I'm confident it will meet my needs in that area. I don't think I'll be performing in public on the horn (but who knows?). Construction quality: 1) The finish is beautiful. But one week isn't long enough to evaluate the durability of the finish. If I have problems down the road, I'll return here to report. 2) The valves work fine. I'm wiping them down and re-oiling them after every hour or so of playing. We'll see how that continues. 3) One of the faux pearl inserts on the valves came loose today. I've glued it back with a drop of super glue. I imagine that will take care of the problem. I'll let you know if that recurs. 4) If you zoom in on the attached photo of one of the valves, you can see the rough edge on one of the valve ports. The irregularity seems to be in a position that does not affect valve travel (which is perfectly smooth). It may have some minor turbulence effect (etc) but I do not notice it. It's the kind of thing I would expect to find on a $159 trumpet. Playability 1) I'm just now getting to the point where I know where the notes want to slot. It's very different from my primary trumpet. I don't think practicing this horn will make me much better at playing my main horn - it's that much different. I've decided to use the included 7C mouthpiece for this horn even though I use a premium 1.5C-sized mouthpiece on my main horn. The 7C just makes slotting much easier on this pocket trumpet, compared to my primary horn mouthpiece. 2) The sound on this horn is clear and sweet, when I get the slotting right. I haven't mastered that yet. So I can't get around on this horn as quickly and cleanly as I do on my main horn. That's probably to be expected. But I am getting better day by day. 3) Intonation is challenging on this horn. It has all the peculiarities of any 3 valve brass instrument, but they seem to be a bit more pronounced on this horn. Maybe that will get better as I continue to practice. There are the usual 1-2-3 and 1-0-3 valve combinations which require extending the 3rd slide. But I haven't mastered the technique of extending that slide without disrupting the stability of my embouchure. There is also the tendency of D, Eb, and E at the top of the staff to be flat. It is possible to compensate with alternate fingerings there, or to "lip it up" with the standard fingerings. It's nothing that trumpet players haven't addressed before. Bottom line, I'm quite happy with this horn. At $159, it's a real bargain. I believe it will enable me to keep my embouchure in shape while traveling, without requiring me to add my full size main horn to my baggage. ... show more

  • Great for staying in shape while traveling
Color: Gold
I just wanted something I could carry on the plane and stay in shape when I travel. It’s a pain to reinvent the wheel every time you come back from a trip and your chops are down. Much easier to put this in the overhead bin. Case seems sturdy. Price is great! No big deal if it were to get lost or stolen. Probably wouldn’t use it on a gig except as a novelty, but sounds much better than I expected. Solid five stars! ... show more

  • Far EXCEEDED expectations. From a professional trumpet player.
Color: Gold
Set your expectations where they should be. You get what you pay for usually, but this horn was genuinely quite good. Not to compare it to a real trumpet. You wont get the sound of a professional trumpet out of this horn, but mine is holding up well and its nice in the car or if someone asks you to play. ... show more

  • Good stuff
Color: Nickel
I decided to go ahead and learn trumpet. Been at it about 3 weeks and I really like this little guy. I can keep it in tune and it fits right in with my other miniature instruments 😆🎷🎺🎸

  • A Cute Llil Feller!
Color: Nickel
I played trumpet throughout my childhood and first year of college, but since then, I had given up on the dream of becoming the next Miles Davis. Now that I’m over 30 and got nothing else to do during this quarantine, I decided to try and chase that dream once again! Now even though I can barley remember “Hot Crossed Buns” and my embouchure has been reduced to that of sounding similar to the kazoo sounds on TikTok, this Bad Larry was no disappointment! It’s a decent buy for sure! The trumpet itself came in great condition with no scratches or dings, the valves and slides move very freely, and the tuning and all-over sound was great! The storage case it came with wasn’t top quality, but it was good enough for the price. It also included a 7C mouthpiece (I’m using my Schilke 14a 4a because if ya ain’t trying to cheat, ya ain’t trying to win!!), cleaning tools, a small thing of valve oil (Spring for some “Blue Juice”. It’s the best, longest lasting valve oil I’ve used.), and I guess some white playing gloves that might’ve fit Frodo Baggins.... All in all, for $120 it’s definitely worth the price, and you may not become the next Chris Botti with this as your horn of choice, but it’s definitely a great little portable one to use for starting out or rekindling a hobby!! ... show more

  • Very interesting little horn
Color: Nickel
It's not bad, and the sound is better than most beginner trumpets. Getting it in tune can be a challenge. Great to carry around when you know you may have your hands full. Great for short practices.

  • Excellent quality for the price
Color: Nickel
The trumpet is outstanding, even compared with more expensive student quality instruments. Construction and finish are excellent, and all the slides and valves move smoothly. Sound quality is very good. The mouthpiece that comes with it is ok, but results are noticeably better with a higher quality mouthpiece. The case is excellent, well made and very light, but sturdy enough to offer a lot of protection. The polishing cloth is adequate. The gloves are just thin cotton gloves. The cleaning brushes are very cheap, and mine arrived so smashed they are unusable. This kit does not come with slide grease or valve oil like many other trumpet kits do, but you can pick up good quality oil and grease for $5-$10. Overall this is a tremendous value. Just don't expect much from the accessories. ... show more
