  • Fantastic and superbly fun Game, don't understand the negative reviews.
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4
I'll preface this review by saying two things. One, I don't write reviews....Ever..So this is rare. Two, I owned quite a few previous Tiger Woods golf iterations on older gen consoles, and played (and still play) Tiger Woods 14 (PS3) to death. I own almost every course in TG14 and have played it for 3 years straight. I recently bought a PS4 and I've been eyeing Rory Mac PGA Tour since its conception. Like others, I've held off on buying it due to the negative reviews and complaints. I finally decided to pull the trigger, buying a used (nearly new) copy on Amazon. Now I have just started playing the game (Jan 2017), so I understand that 1) the game's been out for a year and a half, and 2) quite a few updates have been made including patches and a number of new, free courses, all of which I downloaded before even firing up the game. So maybe I'm "spoiled" since I'm starting the game after almost 2 years of upgrades, but with that said...I'll just say this... THIS GAME IS FUN AS HELL and looks and sounds beautiful. As a long time Tiger player and a frequent, avid real life golfer, I'll just say that in my mind, this game blows TG14 away. The graphics are sensational. Water glistening, putter shimmering, every tree branch, acorn, twig, leaf, etc is modeled and looks amazing. The real life golfers in the game (McIlroy, Spieth, DJ) look awesome. The sound in the game is AMAZING. From the ambience of the crowd huddling nearby to the rippling of the water to the crisp ping of the ball of the driver face, this game nails it. Next, the commentary is just fabulous. As a frequent, weekly tourney Golf Channel viewer, hearing Frank Nobilo and partner call the round is just plain cool. And what shocked me is that throughout an entire 18 hole round, they almost never repeat themselves. They have plenty to say about the course itself or the golfer if you are playing one of the real life guys. Granted there are a few occasional mishaps in the commentary (saying I'm knee deep in rough when I'm in the fairway for example), but they aren't a big deal. Next, the physics and realism factor is better than ever. When playing in Tour Mode, the game is about as realistic as it gets. The physics are far better than ever, and shots look, feel, swing, and sound so much better than anything in previous tiger woods games. I found myself well challenged in Tour Mode, trying to shape a nice draw or fade off the tee and not slice it into the trees. Hit it too far into the trees in this game and, as in real life, you can find yourself with a horrible lie with absolutely no shot. Putting is a bit challenging too. One thing I don't like about the new putting is you're very much on your own in tour mode. One thing I liked about TG14 is it gave you the slope angles and such on the green which helped estimate the break in the putt. Now you have to rely solely on the gridline beads on the green. Other things...I like the shorter waits between holes. There's almost no load time anymore going to the next hole. One thing I wish they'd improve is having more game modes. For example, I wish there was a Practice Mode where you just hit on the Driving Range to practice shots or a practice putting green. Instead the only way I've found to get to a "driving range" is to play through the Prologue and intro stuff until you can pick that option. I haven't tried the career mode yet so can't comment on that yet, but I will, and may update this review when I have a chance. All in all, this game isn't perfect, but it is FAR from dismal like many reviewers have made it seem. Granted maybe it sucked when it first came out in 2015, but I can tell you that now in 2017, the game is pretty damn awesome. If you love golf and have been on the fence about getting this game as I was, get it!! It is a fantastic game and is boatloads of fun for anyone that loves golf, the PGA Tour, and Golf Channel. ... show more

  • This game has made a comeback.

The reviews from 2015 and starting 2016 don't have the newest game update.. and are a bit unfair because it's changed greatly since then. I bought this game because I always have just been a golf game fan and I find this game is awesome!! Pros: - No wait time between holes. Finish a 18 hole course around 30 min. - 19 great and wide variety of courses with newest update 1.09 (my tiger woods 12 game had around 12 courses with more available for purchase) - Graphics on my 4k tv (no I don't have the PRO ps4) made some believe I was watching golf on TV because the graphics were that good. - Game modes are also available like 4 ball, alternate shot, best ball. These were not available right away they were part of an update. - More golfers like Dustin Johnson have been added for more variety. - The night club challenge offers some fun challenges testing your skills. Negatives - Comments on course from commentators can be wrong. E.g. ball can be going at green and they will say that it's a bad shot and heading for rough. Or a putt that they say that you should lag it up close and go for two but when you lag it up they say it was a misread and a bad putt. - the game seems to still lack some customization options. I don't see any options for weather conditions or to change how the career mode field shoots. - I wish you could play the night club challenge courses as a regular golf course! ... show more

  • Lots of fun

It’s an older game so the head to head servers must have been taken down because nobody was available for the head to head online games.

  • Rory McIlroy PGA Tour falls short in nearly every way compared to EA's last golf game
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4
The inevitability of having to move on from Tiger Woods after such a long relationship put EA Sports in a position where they felt it necessary to take the rebooted PGA Tour series in a totally different direction. Rory McIlroy PGA Tour has aimed at appealing to a more “casual” consumer. Gone are healthy lineups of licensed courses and golfers, and nods to history of the sport. In their place are arcade-elements like fantasy courses and over-the-top mini-games. Over two years have passed since Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14, and the new McIlroy title comes up short compared to that game in most every area that matters. As a product, Tiger 14 offered significantly more content, all of which was far more compelling than what’s found in McIlroy, which feels barren and dull in comparison. It’s a struggle to find things that McIlroy does better. To its credit, the courses included in McIlroy look spectacular, and the presentation of them is fantastic. There’s some graphical blur and pop-in but otherwise the game looks nice despite appearing to be sub-1080p. The commentary is an improvement, though inaccurate at times, and the crowd sounds are decent though not always responsive at the right moments. The crowd looks good, is active, and you even see them applauding and walking around. The Prologue, which is essentially a guided tour through big moments of the US Open by McIlroy, ends up being the most interesting aspect of the game and that’s over after 20 minutes. Features one would hope for and expect, like tiebreaker playoffs and replay functionality, are absent. Instead some questionable design decisions have been made. Career Mode is very basic. There isn’t even a calendar you can view of upcoming events. Maybe that’s to hide that the lack of courses will make the mode stale fairly quickly. Adding in the “Quick Rounds” feature, which is defaulted on and already has people confused and wondering why they can only play a few holes each round, only compounds that concern. There are merits in allowing people to play through rounds quicker and certainly many people will appreciate the ability to do so. However it really creates a detached feeling, only playing 4-5 holes per round, and the sense of potential accomplishment vanishes along with it. At least it’s only an option but EA should have given people the choice up-front, similar to what they’ve done with the “Gameplay Styles”, rather than making it the default way to play in Career. Then there’s the pathetic create-a-golfer system. In a game that puts so much weight on playing with a created golfer, inherently due to the make-up of the game and the thin roster of licensed golfers, it’s really unacceptable. It’s also worth noting there is no “GameFace” type feature, which bizarrely was prioritized for NBA Live instead. Rory McIlroy PGA Tour has only 8 licensed courses on disc, plus 4 fantasy courses. There are only 12 licensed golfers. This game offers less than half of what Tiger 14 had a launch as far as courses and golfers go. One thing that works in McIlroy is the offering of three different “Gameplay Styles”. Other sports games would be wise to offer various ways to play that may be more accommodating to different people. The three offer different approaches that span from the “arcade” to the more “sim” – though the sim Tour style is still fairly easy to pick up and play. It seems that no matter how badly the shot stroke is mangled, the shot will go straight, it’s just a question of distance. Putting and getting out of precarious positions presents the extent of the challenge. The lack of loading time between holes (which The Golf Club has too) was touted heavily in promotion. Undoubtedly it’s a benefit to the new game but loading times into the courses are lengthy, and menu navigation is unresponsive and frustratingly laggy. I’m not against mini-games. I actually think they have a place within all sports games, even the sim-centric ones. They can be used as a teaching tool where people improve skills through the process that can then be applied to the actual games. The Night Club Challenge though is more of its own thing. It’s not going to help people in a way that translates to the normal golfing. It feels like something you’d play on your phone. The Night Club Challenge has some appeal despite that and is mildly fun – some will probably find it to be more and that’s especially true of completionists and those who enjoy the challenge of topping previously held high scores. The mode is boring at first but after a few challenges it starts to become more interesting. That’s when boosts start getting introduced and even elements like portals make their way in. I’ve gone through 24 of the 62 on Wolf Creek so far and there are still Paracel Storm and Coyote Falls to unlock along the way. EA decided to introduce a new element into Online Play by rendering the other players onto the course along with you. In theory it sounds interesting but in practice it’s a dismal failure. Those players appear out of thin air and then vanish. They’re nothing more than a distraction. It was actually better in the past when you’d see their shot arcs instead. Online matches also have no commentary or crowd noise, making it a completely empty experience and a bore to play. Potentially it could be better with groups of friends who are chatting on mic together but that’s the only scenario where it would be passable. What EA Sports has delivered with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is a game that doesn’t have enough content to justify its price at launch, and what it does have won’t resonate strongly with either the “sim” or “casual” crowd. EA has made mistakes with some other games in the past where they try and go this route of angling for ways to market a “sim” series to a “casual” audience. The results have been products that have no true identity, disappoint in sales, and are quickly forgotten. It would seem unlikely that McIlroy will avoid that same fate. ... show more
