Scent: Birchwood
I have been using DC soaps and body washes for a while now because I enjoy their fragrances but have always wished the scent would last after the shower. So I was quite excited to see that they started offering a line of colognes with the same fragrances. Unfortunately, unlike other brands, Duke Cannon does not offer samplers so to try a new fragrance is a $20 experiment. I’m writing this review to try to describe the scents I’ve tried so that potential buyers can better guess which ones they might prefer. I will update the review whenever I try a new fragrance. The scents that I’ve tried are potent and long lasting and a tin should last a few months even with daily use so as long as one likes the fragrance, I would consider this an excellent product. So far, I’ve tried: Leaf and Leather, Bay Rum, Birchwood. Leaf and Leather: I was familiar with this one because it is my favorite body wash fragrance (formerly Old Glory). It is described as tobacco and leather and that is pretty much exactly what it smells like. I’ve always loved the rich, warm, almost fruity sweetness of pipe tobacco despite never having smoked tobacco of any sort. If you’ve ever walked by a tobacco store in a mall, you probably know the scent. It is very sweet but not feminine. The leather adds a musky bit of sharpness that helps to balance the sweetness without clashing. This may not be for everyone, but it is my personal favorite (so far). Bay Rum: This is another fragrance that can be found in their soaps and body washes (which you might be able to find in some large retailers like Target, if you want to sample the fragrance without buying). Like the Leaf and Leather, this has a rich, warm sweetness. But rather than using a sharp scent to balance it, it uses strong spice notes, primarily nutmeg and allspice. It is reminiscent of Old Spice but not as “milky”. Does it smell like rum? Maybe? A little bit? It’s kind of hard to tell through the spice, but it is a very warm and inviting fragrance. Birchwood: I went into this one blind. It sounded interesting tho so I took a chance. It… was not what I was expecting. I use the word “sweet” a lot when talking about these fragrances and I know from their soaps that not all of their scents are like this, but this one is perhaps the sweetest smelling that I’ve tried. It is unabashedly floral. I feel like I recognize the flower it is derived from but can’t quite put my finger on it. Hyacinth? Gardenia? I’d have to go to an Old Yankee Candle shop and peruse the flower scents there to match it. It’s not a masculine scent at all. But after the sweetness hits you, you get an oddly tangy after scent like the smell of sawdust from fresh cut lumber which adds just a smidge of machismo. Like, “I’m a flowery princess… lumberjack.” I’m not a big fan of this one and wouldn’t have bought it had I known what it would smell like. As a cologne, it’s a bit too sweet and jarring, but I don’t mind using a bit in my armpits to act as a deodorant. I think it isn’t quite as cloying when cut with a little body musk. If you are trying solid colognes out and prefer natural smelling fragrances to the sharper “sporty” scents common in men’s deodorants, I also recommend trying the Viking Revolution sampler pack. Bought this fragrance for my boyfriend and it absolutely smells wonderful. Only issue is the container was bent on the side like it had been smashed or something.

Very manly amazing scent. Much more projection then most solid cologne too. Please never get rid of this scent. I buy the cologne, bar soap and body wash regularly!

I will highlight four individual purchases as there is no way to do these separately. My first experience with solid colognes. Previous attempts with alcohol based scents resulted in skin irritation no matter where I applied them. Not a problem with these particular solid colognes. The Birchwood has a nice light scent, not over powering. Came nicely packaged in form fitting plastic bag within a plastic Amazon shipping envelope via UPS. Will update based on feedback from friends. The Special Issue - Light Musk + Neroli also has a light scent, easy to apply. It was packaged in form fitting plastic bag within a plastic Amazon shipping envelope sent via UPS. The Special Issue Vetiver + Oakmoss (Fresh Air, Sandalwood) has a stronger scent. The packaging was adequate with a form fitting plastic bag within a thick paper Amazon envelope but the sliding lid arrived dented as handled by USPS. The Midnight Swim - Cold Water, Crisp Greens, Fresh Air has the stronger scent among the four. Packaging was the worst as the tin was simply placed within a plastic Amazon shipping envelope and delivered by Amazon. Solid cologne was found on the outside of the tin. Purchasers should be warned of and pay attention to the specific suppliers. It would be much better to have a consistent packaging and delivery approach that prevent denting and opening of the tins. ... show more

Pros: Smells good (midnight swim/dark water). I've purchased other solid colognes recently and most are such low concentration of cologne they smell like candle wax, I threw most of them away as useless. So far, the 3 Duke Canon solid colognes are strong enough to used as cologne. I don't know how lost it will last, but I may upgrade to 5 stars if I get at least 4-5 hours from one application. Cons: the new Tin is a sliding lid, like the smaller one in the picture. The old Tins used a hinged lid, which I preferred by a LOT. Those Tins actually snap closed nicely and give you the sense they are secure. The new tin has no such positive feel to the closure. I predict this will open in my toiletries travel case. I'm considered buying a different tin and then transferring the contents. Size is good, but I prefer the smaller size (pictured), for half the price, which let's you try more scents for less money AND carry it with you if you need to reapply. The existing tin is too big to carry on you, but good for a travel kit or bag. ... show more
