As an avid quilter, I use a LOT of thread. My sewing machines work great with standard spools but the larger plastic spools seem to be the trend for thread and they're not so great on my skinny little spindles. My machine doesn't realize the thread is coming from behind it and it's easy to move out of the way when I'm quilting so I don't knock it over.
