  • +battery life and form factor. Horrible picture at 1080p + plain stupid software interface design
Color: Black
Very disappointed with this camera. Right out of the box you can't just do bluetooth like with my back camera, Fly6 Ce you have to actually go though a big (comparitivly) process to connect to their wifi network that it broadcast ! (This is technology show off for the sake of it on a solution that worked great with simple and quick bluetooth.) Next lack of image stabilization makes even at the highest resolution reading license plates impossible. Last, I run it in Dash cam mode (on the Fly you simply have a overwrite mode as well as a dash cam mode), So when I get home from my ride and plug it in for charging (they decided that it should when it dash mode automatically start recording !!! God that is stupid interface design.) Their answer to me was simply turn off dash cam mode every time I need to charge it after every ride and then turn it back on before every ride. I have to keep it because the form factor (verses stupid looking and boxy Hero Cams) is awesome and the battery life is great as well as the rotating lens. The freaking Hero's battery life is so bad I would have to carry spare batteries with me on a 4-5 hour ride. I want to turn on the camera's forget about them till I get home and plug them in and repeat. I don't want to have to mess with them all the time. :) It gets 2 stars for the form factor and battery life and rotating lens which as I stated are awesome. Otherwise it would get nada for stupid programming and interface design. ... show more

  • Nice features, poor video quality
Color: Black
I really wanted to like this camera. I'm a long time Drift Innovation customer and have had three previous cameras -- the HD170 Stealth, the Drift HD, and the Ghost-S. The one thing I always wanted was better battery life. The Ghost-S was the best at about 2-2.5 hrs depending on conditions, so when I heard about the Ghost XL's 9 hour battery life, I was interested. I thought it might be enough to justify the trade-off of losing the 60fps that the Ghost-S has. Unfortunately, I have found that it isn't like just taking the Ghost-S, removing 60fps, and giving it 9 hours battery life. Had it been that, it would have been a great camera, but it isn't. The picture quality of the recordings is worse than the dash cam setup I have on my bike, which I didn't expect to be action-cam quality. To be fair, it's not horrible, but it's quite a bit better than the Ghost XL. There's a lot of video blur to the point where if you pause the video, you can see several ghosted images behind things like light posts or trees. I don't think that's what Drift Innovation had in mind when they went with the Ghost brand name. The picture is also subject to significant pixelation/blocking, making it look like some cheap digital camcorder that you would buy for a child than a $149 MSRP action cam. I tried many different settings, including bit rates and levels of saturation, but nothing helped. I even tried using the suction cup mount on my car's windshield, which is rock solid, and it still produced the same low quality image. This is in stark contrast to the sharp, detailed image I get with my Ghost-S. I'm guessing this is the difference between a $249 camera and a $149 camera. Another issue I have with this camera, is the rotatable lens is so tight, that you can't make fine adjustments to it, because you really have to muscle it to get it to move, and when you do, it often goes well past the point of rotation where you want it. It pretty much makes it impossible to get the picture truly level without sheer luck. [UPDATE] I did a battery life test where I just set it on my desk and let it record until the battery ran out, and it stopped recording at 7h 27m. While this is still quite impressive, it falls 1h 33m short of the advertised 9 hours. Finally, and this is a minor thing, but worth mentioning -- I could never get the camera to recognize as a mass media storage device on my iMac running Catalina. Even after two firmware upgrades, it would not ever be recognized, meaning I have to pull the microSD and put it into my reader to pull the files off. It's sad, too, because I like what they did with giving it a huge battery and shifting to the small display screen even if you give up the onboard real-time view. I haven't even tested the battery life, because there's really no point with the poor picture quality. It seems like Drift Innovation peaked with the Ghost-S. I held off on the Ghost-4K, because the reviews were consistently poor, and I was hoping this would not be the case with the Ghost XL since 1080p is older tried and true tech. While I'm not a fan of the GoPro Hero form factor, I may just need to start looking at that line of products, because they're constantly improving their cameras with their insane image stabilization and picture quality. Drift Innovation needs to get back to their roots and start innovating again. Overall, I gave it 3 stars, because it's just a middle of the road action camera. It does have some nice features like the DVR, the advertised battery life, the form factor, and waterproofing without an external case, but it's hamstrung by subpar picture quality. I will be sending this back. ... show more

  • Works on iPhone 6 UPDATE
Color: Black
The media could not be loaded. UPDATE: 12/13/20 I was able to connect to the camera with my iPhone SE (iOS 14) by turning Cellular data OFF. It must get confused when you connect via wifi. I only need to connect to make sure the camera level and the view I need and change settings. But you can also view any videos saved which could be useful out in the field. Also, video is much better than the video I posted here. Amazon upload compresses it a lot and it loses quality. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I've been searching for a camera for my bike, something small but also works well. There were a couple of motorcycle reviews that said it worked for them so figured this would work for a bicycle. While it still is a bit larger than I would like and not the easiest thing to use when I finally got it connected to my iPhone it does what I need it to. But it only connects via wifi to my older iPhone 6 not my iPhone SE. It could be it only works on iOS 12 and not 14. Took me a while to finally figure that out. But once connected it does give me what I need: live view, access to recordings, and settings. You can connect to it anywhere as you connect to it directly using the wifi SSID of the camera. You don't need access to a wifi network. Accessing the settings was a big deal for me. I hate tiny little screens plus having to scroll through all of the settings to find the one you want but only one way not back. With the app on my iPhone I can scroll through them all on the one screen. Once setup I need to access the menu to format the memory card. I always format the card instead of erasing the files. I've never had a problem with a memory card. I can also access the photos and videos and live stream. This helped mainly to make sure the camera is aligned but also if something does happen I have immediate access to it. The resolution is fine for my use. Not intending to do online videos. I just need this in case something goes wrong. In 35 plus years of riding I only had one wreck which was caused by another cyclist. With a cam it could have been settled much sooner... This has no vibration reduction so over a bumpy surface like a pebbled driveway it does show up in the video. But it does well on a paved surface. I generally ride 3 to 4 hours so I haven't tried the full 9 hours. But I also intend to use this as a car cam whether driving or parked. I'm using a 128gb memory card which should work out well for most of what I will be using this for. You don't have to take the memory card out. I can just connect it via USB to my iMac and access all the photos and videos from Finder. The camera itself is built well but I wouldn't want it to fall off of my bike. There is no way to attach a safety strap so it needs to be mounted well and checked periodically. I like the lens rotation so you can mount the camera to fit where you need it. It's hard to find the right camera that works for your individual needs. I can see why reviews end up all over the place. This one works for me except that it doesn't work on newer iPhones. Hopefully they will update the firmware in the next 30 days to fix that or I'll have to look again for another cam. Video is clipped to shorten it but gives you some idea what it gives you. Not 4k but at least you can see what is going on. I hadn't realized it was mounted on a slight angle so it looks a little tilted. Also it is mounted on the left side so I'm not as close to the center line as it appears... It filmed the entire 40 mile trip in 5 minute segments. I'll either turn the sound off or add an external microphone. ... show more
