This is my second pair of the women’s last 1460 (and my 5th pair of Docs) My first are smooth leather and were hell to break in. Since I already broke in docs in the early 90s, I don’t feel like I need additional street cred by torturing myself with breaking in docs now. The Nappa is much softer and more giving and thus much easier to wear. I have pretty normal width feet and a very low instep. If I had any higher of one, I would not be able to wear these as they would be too tight across the top of my foot. If you have a decent arch or wider fit, definitely opt for the original unisex last. Also, the nappa has a cheaper feel and probably only cost $150 because they are Docs (not because they are quality leather).

These boots are both fashionable and practical. The bouncing sole design is by a doctor who had suffered a severe ankle injury. He wanted a shoe which would provide ankle support and absorb some of the shock that walking causes to your body each time you take a step. So he designed the first Dr Martin boot for himself, so that he could walk comfortably again. I am very satisfied with my pair. I like how they are made of leather so there are various balsam & polish type products available, allowing you to care for & condition your boot leather, waterproof it and make it last longer, as well as remove dirt & dust, thereby keeping your boots nice and new looking. My ankle injury actually feels better with my boots on, and they are more attractive and fun to wear. The shock absorbing soles really work! The leather does take a minute to break in. The tongue part is part of the boot, not separate like most boots. There are two folds that initially hurt a little making one at first wonder if the boot arch is not built high enough for one's foot. They also rub the heel at first enough to cause small blood stains on your sock for the first few wears. But after applying balsam to the folds on the sides of the tongue and continuing to wear the boots, (leaning into the discomfort) they broke in nicely and I have no more problems. There are no half sizes, so round up if you are a half size, because you definately don't want them to be on the tight side. I wear a 7.5 or 8, and the 8 fits me perfectly. I think Dr Martin's are overall better and more durable than other brands that are made from vegan leather and have regular rubber soles that wear out in a year. Also they seem to come with the Dr Martin's insert sole that is also sold separately, so you won't need to buy that too if you invest in a pair of boots. Enjoy and God bless you.

Everywhere I shopped for new Docs, the 1460s ran $150 across the board. I just needed a pair for a photo shoot and an event so I really couldn’t justify paying full price. Luckily I found this listing for a pair in Used-Good condition. I got them the next day after ordering and tried them on right away. It looked like they were just tried on and used outside one before the person returned them. I didn’t mind the condition at all for how much $ I saved! And I’m happy that they weren’t resold as new or thrown out. I’ll never hesitate to buy used things again!

******Update 6/19/14 - I have, quite literally, worn these every day since I bought them 5 months ago...and they look and feel as great as the day I opened them! Every 2 weeks or so I have treated them to a nice buff of Wonder Balsam and that has keep them water resistant and given a nice sheen to the Napa leather. I really can't tell you how much I love these boots. It would break my heart if they stopped making the Napa leather version, which is why I'm back here looking to buy an identical pair as back-ups lol. These boots are awesome :)******* (Original Review - 1/24/14) I was concerned reading the reviews that the new breed of China-made Doc's would be far inferior to the English made originals. However my stompy-boot-lusting won out and my Amazon order was placed. I opted for the nappa leather and hoped the softer leather would ease the pain of the notorious break-in period. Well, these babies arrived and I was so stoked that I put them on still standing in my doorway. Aaahhh....love! So squishy and smooth, yet tough, thick leather. All stitching is evenly sewn, nice and straight. I am a bit OCD when it comes to this sort of thing and after inspecting these all over I can find no issues whatsoever. I am a womens size 8.5 with a slightly wide foot, so I opted for the men's version of these (UK7/Mens8/Womens9) thinking the extra width in the mens vs. the womens version would be good and I'm very happy I did so....they fit nice. I had bought a pair of insoles here on Amazon with this purchase thinking this would help if they were too big and found I didn't even need them, the fit was good without them. Sure, if they offered half sizes I may have gone a half size down, but it's nothing a thick pair of socks doesn't remedy....so no biggie. So I've been wearing them a week now...everyday....put them on at 5:30 a.m. before I leave for work and don't take them off until around 7:00 p.m. No pain, no drama...just super comfy boots that are breaking in beautifully. I'm already thinking of what color I'll get my next pair in because I can't see myself wanting to wear any other shoes but these for awhile :)
