  • Perfect Fit - Fixed Other Problems...
This was a perfect fit for the camera in our 2014 Explorer, taking less than 20 minutes to install. And it fixed another problem: just before we noticed issues with the backup camera, the radio would turn on randomly. After installing this unit, not only is the rear camera working, but the radio is no longer turning itself on. The Dealer wanted $1200+ to replace the unit, stating that it was an integrated portion of the rear trim. I then found just the camera on a Ford parts list for ~ $300. Some other reviews have talked about having to do a reset of various types which I did not experience, but, I did not run the vehicle between removing the old camera in installing the new unit. I can't state with certainty, but perhaps if the power is turned on w/o a camera installed, that might trigger some service codes, requiring some type of reset. ... show more

  • Revised review: Camera had water entry within 18 months and has died
Updated review May 2023: I thought buying the more expensive Dorman camera would give me a number of year like the original OEM camera. However, now 17 month later after a few days of hard rain I notice the camera image looked like it had water droplets on it and was dirty. I thought maybe it was road film and dew to went to wipe the camera lens only to figure out the water was inside the camera lense. The next day the camera become intermittent and is now completely dead. For 17 months I should have just ordered the cheaper version from someone else. Cars get rained on, the camera shouldn't leak. Original review from Jan 2022: Recommended: newer tech with better picture, field of view is slightly different, has reverse lines My original 2013 Explorer Limited camera was starting to fail when it got warm. In the morning and in cold weather it was fine, but as the day warmed up the camera would not send a signal at all and I got an error message. Replacement with this Dorman camera was easy and took about 30-45 minutes of unhurried work. The only semi-difficult part was getting the little bracket that holds the camera out without breaking it. It sort of snaps in to two holes and then a screw holds it in place. It was hard to snap out, but snapped back in very easily. After installing, the first time I put the Explorer in reverse I got a great camera image, but no backup guide lines. I was starting to get irritated as the other reviews mentioned this camera did support the lines. But surprise, after putting it back in park and putting it in reverse again the lines showed up and have been there since. So first off, this camera is obviously newer tech and has a great picture. The original camera was never this good in my opinion. I would not say it's HD quality as I don't think the display screen is HD level, but the image is crisp, clear and very detailed. It seems to have a wider field of view and the backup guide lines are slightly different angles to the body. So if you're like me and have 9 years of backing up "knowing" where the guide lines where in relation to the car, be prepared to back up like a new driver again for a few days. Overall, you can definitely find cheaper cameras on Amazon, but for the $80 difference, I'd recommend going with the Dorman and getting the aftermarket name brand. Its no guarantee that you won't get a bad one, but the trust level is a little higher and the price is not that bad compared to the dealer quote. Overall, I'm giving the camera 4 stars. I balanced the 4 versus 5, but the field of view difference is real and the camera came with zero information. So I'm shaving off a bit for a minor nitpick as I think an included warning about adjusting to the new camera view might be warranted. I think someone could easily end up scraping a rim up due to the difference in field of view and line position, so a little warning label could save someone else scuffed tires and rims. ... show more

  • Works Great
You know the saying you get what you pay for, well it is true. I had originally bought one that was under half the price of this one. The picture quality was never great and after less than a month it was totally out of focus and out of center. The picture quality on this one is OEM quality. I wish I had spent the extra in the first place as it would have saved me having to install a second one. ... show more

  • Good replacement but not as good as OEM camera
Was having issues (grainy analog view, reversed image, black screen with go to dealership message) with the rear view camera on a 2013 Explorer limited. This camera was an easy plug and play replacement that took less than 15 minutes to install. The image quality is not as good as the OEM camera but it works well enough. ... show more

  • Works just like the original. Easy install!
Bought this for the same problem many others have had with their backup camera. The OEM part is much more expensive and the dealer wanted to charge a ridiculous amount to install. I watched an installation video online and had this thing installed in about 15 minutes. If you are going to install this yourself you will need a 10mm and 11mm socket as well as a T20 torx driver/bit for the "star" screw holding the camera in. 2 Tips for install: 1) Take your time removing the "explorer" chrome panel after the 6 bolts are removed. There are 2 clips on each side and if you pull evenly you will not break it. 2) The bracket holding the camera in (where you need the T20 torx) can be a bit tricky to get out and back in. Again just take your time and don't yank on it. ... show more

  • Intermittent Camera issue solved!
2014 Explorer Sport (w/ Sony) had the camera issue where the rear camera would only come on when the vehicle was cold, and if left in Reverse, the image would disappear after 5-10 seconds. Thought it was the wiring, then I thought it was the camera module... Pulled the trigger on one of these aftermarket cameras, (glad I didn't go with the cheaper one) and it only took me 7 minutes to install this. Fits just like the stock camera, image quality is about 95% as good as the stock camera, parking lines are there, eventhough I don't use them, its a nice feature.. Highly recommend THIS camera instead of the others, if your camera is going out. ... show more

  • It works. Clear view, as good as original.
Easy to install and works great. Original backup camera stopped working, then started working again, but the picture was backwards. Left was right, right was left, not usable. Used on a 2014 Ford Explorer. Very happy so far.
