  • Good for metal
Color: Overdrive
Works great at noon and is very gritty on the 3rd setting

  • I normally don't write reviews but they helped me before so...
Reviews have helped me in my decisions to buy or not buy a product, though I have not written much reviews for others... I'm new to guitar. Been practicing for the past 3 months and I owned a Donner Noise Killer mini pedal. It did its job but I noticed that the tighter the single knob was too the threshold, the closer I got to affecting the tone. Single knobs noise gates are quick inexpensive solutions but the Donner Soph Gate is a must buy. It took some tweaking but the settings are where I need them. Doesn't destroy sustain but you have to find your sweet spot because not all gain pedals are the same. I own Ibanez Super Metal Mini, TC ELECTRONIC MOJO MOJO, and TC ELECTRONIC DARK MATTER. Sometimes I stack them and the gain noise is out of control but not with Soph Gate. This gate is quiet. I mean quiet. You must go through it's effects loop to get the most of it but if you're not touching the strings and all pedals are on, you wouldn't know it. That's where the tweaking comes in, because once you touch the strings, you'll hear it... So play with the knobs till you get it right because when you do, this thing is fast and I mean lighting fast in stopping unwanted noise. You can have your over drive or distortion pedal on, turn the Soph Gate off and you won't hear them plus if you turn the gate on, your gain is ready to kick in while you play. This thing is absolutely TRUE BYPASS. Any who, I hope it helps. I have in this order, Guitar, compresor soph gate, loop : all my gain, then straight into the Joyo preamp house. There I use its effects loop for all my chorus, modulation, delay, and reverb. I hope it helps you decide. • Very versatile for price, great palette of reverbs
The Donner Vintaverb has a lot going for it - starting with seven reverb types: Room, Studio, Hall, Plate, Spring, Modulation, and Distortion. The classic types hold up very well in comparison to other digital reverb units. The spring reverb, while ok, is not going to make me want to choose it over my amp's (real) spring, but not a surprise there. (I use a stereo rig through two Peavey Classic tube amps.) With so many options (including short/long pre-delay and delay control), there are a lot of sounds you can make and they are not all equally wonderful -- it is possible to wind up in some very over-digital and over-modulated places. But to appreciate what is actually on offer here, start with the suggested settings of mix, delay, and tone that they suggest as best for each reverb type, and you'll find that you have a great palette / starting place for sonic fiddling. These reference points actually A/B pretty well to my ears with reverbs costing twice as much. (The modulation and distortion reverb are somewhat in a category by themselves, and may or may not suit your musical ear.) The "Freeze" function (not sure if that is the best name for it) brings a whole other performance angle into it, as activating it with the footswitch causes the effect to swell. It seems (with Freeze activated) that the signal has a feedback loop as well, as it can start to sound like a locomotive coming at you pretty quickly! Use lightly, and I think it will inspire further fine-tuning. The package itself seems pretty solid and features a "silent" on/off switch that requires a mere foot tap (also functions with hold as "freeze" switch"). The stereo through aspect, for those who (like me) roll that way, is a great value for the money. Running it through the F/X loop seems to give it a cleaner sound, although not to imply that it is otherwise muddy. If this is anywhere near your price point, you will be getting good value either side of it. ... show more

  • Very Interesting Sound
Color: Overdrive
I can only assume this has a Dumble sound since I’ve never heard a Dumble amp except on recordings. It’s a very light and transparent overdrive. To my old ears, I need the gain up nearly all the way to hear much of an effect. The Mode switch has a very slight impact on the sound, almost indistinguishable from other settings. Perhaps it would be more noticeable at volumes beyond “bedroom levels.” And it doesn’t sound like a clone of anything else I’ve heard or own. I have a Timmy, a Klon clone, a Tube screamer, a Big Muff Pi. It’s not even in the neighborhood of these. Much less driven and lighter even at full settings. All those comments regard the pedal’s use with my Fender Princeton solid state. On my tube amp, the gain is much more responsive and the Mode switch definitely sounds different on each setting. I like it, a lot. When I start playing guitar through it, I play longer than I intend because it’s such a pleasure. It runs by power adapter only which is okay because I never use batteries. At first, I thought the graphics were printed on glossy paper and glued on, but I believe they are painted. The metal box seems lighter than my other pedals and yet appears sturdy enough. Overall I am satisfied with the construction. And overall I’m glad I bought this pedal. Great price, great sound! ... show more
