  • Fantastic value delay with plenty of tones and real performance features
I’ve been using the Donner Island Delay on my pedalboard for a while now, and it’s seriously impressive given the price point. This isn’t just a “cheap digital delay” — it offers useful delay modes, tap tempo, stereo operation, true bypass, and a looper, all in one compact unit. Tones & Features One of the first things that stood out to me is the variety of delay modes. With 10 different types — from clean digital repeats to tape-style echoes and modulation flavors — I’ve had loads of fun exploring textures, whether I’m after classic ambient delay, slapback for rhythm parts, or more experimental sounds. The Looper adds a great bonus layer of utility, letting me lay down quick loop ideas or jam over my own phrases without needing another pedal. The Tap Tempo works well and makes syncing repeats to the tempo of what I’m playing really easy, which I appreciate since timing is everything with delay. It’s a feature you don’t always see on pedals in this price bracket. Stereo & True Bypass Stereo outputs are a nice touch — when I run this into a stereo rig it really opens up the sound and gives delays more width and space. The true bypass means the pedal doesn’t color my tone when it’s off, which I always prefer on my board. Controls & Usability The controls are intuitive and easy to navigate on the fly: delay time, feedback, level, plus mode selection and tap tempo make it straightforward to dial in whatever vibe I’m after. Even with all those options, nothing feels buried or confusing. Build quality feels solid too — the footswitch is responsive, the footpad graphics are clear, and it’s compact enough to fit neatly into a crowded board. Real-World Use In practice, this delay sounds musical and organic — not brittle or digital-sounding in a bad way — which is something I didn’t necessarily expect from a budget pedal. It responds nicely to picking intensity and guitar volume changes, too. Whether I’m playing ambient textures, rhythm parts, or leads that need a bit of space and echo, this pedal has been versatile and fun. A Few Notes Nothing major, but: • Some of the delay modes are more subtle than others — a feature if you want nuanced textures, but you’ll want to spend a bit of time exploring them to find your favorites. • The looper is great for quick ideas but isn’t as deep as a dedicated looper pedal — still useful and fun for practice or simple jams. Bottom Line The Donner Island Delay is an outstanding value — packed with delay modes, tap tempo, stereo outputs, true bypass, and a built-in looper. It sounds musical and versatile, and has genuinely earned a permanent spot on my pedalboard. ... show more

  • Interesting and useful but not for everyone
Color: Blue:Compressor
I love compressors, especially DBX rack compressors, and I leave them on all the time when I’m playing, but I use compressors and limiters very subtly and more to thicken the tone and get a slight bounce in the feel of the string. This is not a transparent sounding pedal in my opinion, it thickens the sound of the instrument but in a way that appeals to me. On my pedalboard I use the 18V Maxon which is an actual DBX 160 in a pedal. I was hoping this LAX would be an inexpensive alternative. For jazz and finger style, this pedal really excels with a warm fat sound. The bright switch I find a bit obnoxious. I don’t mean to single this pedal out in that respect because I find all compressors that have a bright switch tend to destroy the tone. This is extremely quiet and has a lot of usable settings and definitely thickens and adds body to the signal of the instrument along with the bounce. It would deliver as much squish as you could want if that is your thing. I generally like to leave a compressor on all the time when I play so I don’t set it to be too squishy. Boss has made a few “limiter pedals” and they are pretty equivalent to what this sounds and feels like., a nice sonic edition, but not necessarily transparentlike the Maxon or a rack compressor. With the discount this pedal comes in at a little over $40, which is a huge value for the quality. The pedal looks classy and has that raw aluminum casing look that Ehx pedals have and it has a nice silk screen graphic on the face. I think this is a keeper, but if you’re not really familiar with compressors, you may have an issue understanding this and how to use it at first. As another reviewer mentioned it is questionable whether this is a peak limit, more than a compressor. I recommend it and I have tried expensive ones and cheap ones (probably 30 over the years). This goes toe to toe and then some with most compressor pedals and has a bit more girth than most of them which I really like. It’s also extremely quiet, which is not always the case with compressor pedals. I would use this first in the signal chain (before drives). Nicely done. ... show more

  • Donner Analog Tape Delay Stereo Peddle
Color: Tape Delay
It’s ok for a budget peddle, you can get exactly what you pay for. Clean analog “tape” Stereo delay. I bought mainly to use with my Roland JC-200 as it has true stereo inputs.

  • An Unbelievable Value
Color: Overdrive
If you expect to achieve the authentic Dumbel sound from a pedal, your expectations are out of line with reality. However, that said, I have been playing guitar for more than a half century and while I play clean finger style most of the time, I also enjoy and have owned many overdrive pedals. The Donner Dumbal over drive is one of and possibly the best I have ever owned Including an original Ibanez 808 tube screamer, Love Amp 11 and Double Durple all of which are excellent pedals. I generally like a transparent overdrive to provide a signal boost and more body and headroom to the guitar tone. This pedal provides superb control that ranges from nearly transparent to rough and dirty as hell. The Donner Dumbal is a great pedal at a reasonable price I highly recommend. I may buy one or two more, for my 2 amp guitar rig and for my bass rig as well. ... show more
