  • Sweet tone on the cheap!!
Color: Blue Compressor
The media could not be loaded. *updated: this is the ONLY pedal I leave on all the time. I run it first in the chain. I've never owned another compressor so I can't compare to any others, all I know is I don't like my tone as much without it!* OK... I'm really enjoying these Donner pedals! Lot's of value for the money, no doubt. The Donner Ultimate Compressor again does not disappoint on my quest for sweet tone on the cheap! I found it to be outstanding in front of a Monoprice Tube Overdrive, into some Delay/Verb and into the clean channel of an amp (for example I'm using the Donner Mini Guitar Amp with Cab sim in the video) -- I was blown away with how great the little amp sounded first off, and how great the Donner Ultimate Compressor fattened up the tone! I would not be afraid to run this setup live direct to the PA! The compressor is very versatile. You can get subtle fat compression, bright (with the Normal/Treble switch), and you can really crank the signal and get some natural distortion with this baby. Putting it in front of a tube amp will result in more gain and breakup depending on the amp, etc... I use it in front of the Zoom MS50-G amp sims for the Marshall 1959 and the Vox AC30, and it drives them into distortion even with the subtle compression at around 11 o-clock - the good kind just to clarify! This is my first compressor, ever, and I've been playing live since the 80's... never needed one. I've been fine with a wah, distortion or fuzz, maybe a delay and a clean boost for years... well those pedals are gettin' WORN OUT and I'm swappin' my vintage, expensive, delicately fragile and broken masterpieces out for a new crop of the low-cost market of pedals, which I'm pleasantly finding, sound pretty damn good! I own several Donner pedals now, the Tiny Looper, Booster, Ultimate Compressor and the Mini Guitar Amp. They all sound pretty damn good considering under $150 for all of them - I'll be using these pedals for a long time. ... show more

  • Great Product at a good price (re-reviewed from a previous negative review)
Color: Blue Compressor
I previously reviewed this product and gave it and the Donner company rep I was dealing with a very low score. I've since had several communications with a supervisor and am now satisfied the issues have been resolved. They sent me a replacement and the new one worked perfectly. No noise at all. The tone and volume adjustments are smooth and have a wide and impressive range. All it lacks is an "attack" adjustment (which I don't really need). There is no accommodation for a battery...you'll need a 9v power supply. I have an amp that I love (Fender Blues Deluxe) that is powerful but has no step-down adjustment so it is a bit difficult to evaluate the compression quality because pretty much anything past "2" rattles windows and sends the dogs running. But after spending some time with the pedal on and off and at different levels I can definitely say it does it's job. I tested it directly between the guitar and the amp and in the front of my pedal chain just after the tuner and wah pedal. No noticeable difference and again, absolutely no noise. Very small footprint and very sturdy metal case. The first one I got must have been defective and the company supervisor has apologized profusely for the problem I had with the previous customer rep. I purchased a fuzz pedal a few months ago and had absolutely no problems. I would not now hesitate to order a Donner product again in the future. The supervisor (Zhan) was very helpful in this situation. I think anyone would be pleased with this pedal. ... show more

  • Does not run on a 9 volt battery, so you will need to use an external power supply.
Color: Blue Compressor
I am a Bass player and I play different styles. My love for music spans plenty of genres: Progressive Rock, Gospel, Jazz, Speed metal, Country etc. I am comfortable playing bass at any one of these gigs. I needed to find a compressor pedal that works well and was easy on my pockets because not everyone can afford "top of the line" equipment" per se. Lots of musicians are on a shoe string budget but need quality and realistically they deserve that. Don't get me wrong, if you have the 'benjies$' to rock with the big names then do it. But for me, companies that come along and break this 'mold' of only selling products in the $ mid 100's-$1000's dollars range, and actually make quality products, will reel me in as a dedicated customer. As a bassplayer, I lean more towards guitar accessories & effects more than bass accessories, specifically pedals, because sonically they have a quality that I love. I am fascinated with ELF technology and low frequencies but again, in terms of $$, a Low Frequency integrator can cost you big time. I have several basses and one of my basses is a 5 string detuned Low to High: F#,B,E,A,D and I almost fried my bass cab recently because my rack mount compressor is busted and my bass head has a limiter but no built in compression. I normally run full range, and run into the active input of my head. I had to move quick, do research and I found this Donner Compressor pedal. Thanks to the previous reviews, and a great product, I made a great choice. It may not be everyone's choice, but honestly I think this pedal is killer. Overall, the Donner is fairly sturdy but I suggest storing it in in the accompanying case, or keep on your pedal-board because its easy to crack or break the treble switch. I will buy more Donner products. Nothing I really dislike about it so far. I just used it this past weekend. I love the 'treble' switch feature' and the 'tone pot'. You can imagine that for solos where you really wanna hit it hard, then you can do it with this baby. Hopefully this review helps someone decide in the future whether or not they want to invest in this pedal. Peace ... show more
