Description

A group of soldiers dispatched to the Scottish Highlands on special training maneuvers face their biggest fears after they run into Captain Ryan—the only survivor of a Special Ops team that was literally torn to pieces. Ryan refuses to disclose his mission even though whoever attacked his men might be hungry for seconds. Help arrives in the form of a local woman who shelters them in a deserted farmhouse deep in the forest…but when they realize that they are surrounded by a pack of blood-lusting werewolves, it's apparent their nightmare has just begun! From Neil Marshall, the director of The Descent, Doomsday, Centurion and episodes of Game of Thrones, comes this terrifying thriller starring Kevin McKidd (Rome, Trainspotting), Sean Pertwee (Gotham, Event Horizon), Emma Cleasby (Doomsday) and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones).Bonus Content:4K Restoration from the Original Camera Negative Approved by Director Neil Marshall and Cinematographer Sam McCurdyAudio Commentary with Writer and Associate Professor of Film Alison PeirseAudio Commentary with Director Neil MarshallAudio Commentary with Producers David Allen and Brian O'TooleWerewolves, Crawlers, Cannibals and More An Interview with Neil MarshallA History of Lycanthropy Author Gavin Baddeley on Werewolf CinemaWerewolves, Folklore and Cinema A Video Essay by Author Mikel J. • Classic werewolf film finally receives top notch release.
A terrific and unusual werewolf horror movie and Neil Marshall’s first film (he directed “The Descent”), the new Shout 4K release presents the film the best it has ever looked. The Blu-Ray included is also to- notch looking as well. Keep in mind that the film was shot in 16mm for 4K release will reveal both the improved detail and limitations of Super 16mm. 4K may have been overkill for this but the improvements over the original Blu-Ray are significantly. When the original Blu-Ray was released, the camera negative could not be located and, as a result, the transfer was pulled from secondary sources which meant a less than optimal looking transfer. The third time IS the charm though as the original negative was located and we finally get the definitive version of this low budget but terrific horror thriller. The plot is simple- a group of soldiers in the Scottish Highlands discover thst their opponents in a training exercise were largely whipped out. One survivor (Liam Cunningham) eventually shares what happened to them. Unable to contact their base for retrieval, they find they are at the mercy of something stalking them. The soldiers (Kevin McKidd and Sean Pertwee among them) must figure out how to survive in the wilderness against an unseen foe that is picking them off until they can escape or help eventually arrives. Marshall constructs a rather clever plot and some nice twists while still engaging the tropes of the horror genre. The performances are excellent and, given the low budget nature of the film, the production design and execution is impressive. A big budget movie should do things as well as these guys do. As mentioned, this 4K with the accompanying Blu-Ray disc are both huge steps up from the previous versions on Blu-ray and DVD which could look quite murky. This new transfer looks quite nice. The subdued colors don’t really benefit from HDR like some films might but there is an uptick there as well. The difference here is detail-particularly during nighttime or dark sequences and there are lots of those-is hugely improved. The depth (the previous transfer often times could look a bit flat) also experienced a noticeable improvement as well as fine detail. Blacks were crushed in the previous versions here they aren’t. These improvements and improved source also reveals the limitations of the source as well. The audio, sounds quite nice. It isn’t a revelation; the 5.1 doesn’t use the format to it’s best advantage but is is decent. The special features port over the previous Shout Blu-Ray plus we get two new commentary tracks as well as four new supplements/featurettes. Fans who were waiting for this cult classic to receive its due will be pleased with this improved high def release. Recommended. ... show more

  • Greatest werewolf movie of all time! Great improvements over previous releases!
After the much too long wait on this it was worth it. The original DVD release was pretty barebones and horrible and this being a pretty obscure foreign film to most people didn't get alot of much needed attention initally. The 4K release seems to have better contrast in alot of dark scenes is one of the things that really stood out to me rewatching this. Overall picture was improved so if you're a fan of the movie or a first time viewer this the version to get without a doubt. New cover art work looks cool so that's always a plus. Only downside to this version is you don't get a digital copy.... which is sad it's phyisical only because this would be an excellent addition to anyones digital library. ... show more

  • WEREWOLVES
Dog Soldiers (4K) Dir. Neil Marshall 3.5/5 This is a 2002 indy vampire movie from Scotland. I've had the Blu-Ray for quite some time. The 4k release was a couple weeks ago. So I thought to give it a other shot. This is a brilliant take on werewolves. With lots of twists and turns in the story along the way. The fact that I had seen this before doesn't matter. The whole thing was very vague to me. Lots of recognizable "he's that guy from that one movie" actors in this. The werewolf VFX are pretty great too. If you like more action centric horror then this might be what you're looking for. ... show more

  • Still one of my top werewolf films
Watched it on SciFi Channel (SyFy now) when it first premiere on it in the US. Thought it was going to be a cheesy SciFi werewolf movie with bad CGI but it kept with the practical effects and story is good (at the time). Packaging was great, Blu-ray case great no dents, rips etc

Nice 4K and all around good movie. If you like werewolves, you'll like this. Good sound and visuals. Good storyline as well. In my opinion, this will be a classic.

  • A fantastic remaster of one of the best indie horror films!
This remaster of Neil Marshall's awesome indie werewolve flick is night and day compared to the previous blu-ray release. The image has been immensely cleaned up. Far less grain and one particular scene near the beginning that looked sped up in the previous release now looks in line with the timing of the rest of the film. I highly suggest it. ... show more
