  • The added bits in the "Fly More Combo" are definitely worth it
Style: Platinum Configuration: Fly More Bundle
This Mavic Pro Platinum is my first drone, and I love it. It is easy to fly, takes good (albeit not dslr-quality) photos and video, and is not annoyingly loud. The design of the drone and other bits is very well thought out -- for example, the flight batteries will automatically discharge themselves after a settable number of days in order to preserve their useful life, and the charging hub pumps all its power into the least-discharged battery first, so you get flying again as quickly as possible. The Mavic is perfect for my photogrammetric mapping application, mostly using pre-planned "waypoint" flights controlled by the Litchi app (a slightly more powerful third-party replacement for almost all of the features of the included DJI go 4 app except the firmware updater; I need it for its much better facility with pre-planned waypoint "missions"). The Mavic easily fits in a day pack with all its accessories, two extra batteries, etc., in a third-party carrying case, leaving room for other equipment like a landing pad, control-point markers, a jacket, water, lunch, and more. The controller is finicky about connecting to some tablets, including my Android Samsung Galaxy Tab S2, but does eventually work, sometimes after restarting the tablet once or twice. This is really irritating to learn to work around, but in the end is worth it for the bright OLED screen that you can actually see outdoors. Apple tablets and phones work seamlessly, but my iPad Air "retina" screen just can't cut it in the sunlight, although I suppose that some kind of sunshade might make it usable. The fly-more combo is a good deal, because you really need almost everything in it, and it is cheaper than buying them separately. The two extra batteries are a must; the charger and hub for attaching up to four batteries works fine (I got a third-party faster charger but have not needed to even try it yet), the charger that plugs into a car's cigarette lighter might well come in handy, and the extra propellers are good insurance. The "power bank adapter" for the batteries is a small, seemingly trivial thing that finally made sense when I read a comment in a forum post: you always land the drone before the flight battery is dead, leaving some charge in it. So you pop a charged battery into the drone to get back to flying, and use the "power bank adapter" to convert the mostly-discharged flight battery to a "power bank" with a USB cable that plugs into the side port of the controller. This recharges the controller AND your Android tablet plugged into the lower USB port of the controller while you are flying the drone on its next battery! (Apple tablets or phones apparently will not recharge.) If your tablet and controller are fully charged when you start, they will easily last as long as three flight batteries. But if one or both was partially discharged when you began, or you ran your tablet down adjusting flight plans or doing other things with it, you could have to cut your flying short when the tablet or controller threatens to poop out. The little power bank adapter will prevent that, without your having to carry around an additional USB power bank. If you are going to be far from a car or wall socket and expect to use the tablet for something else, like consulting a GIS, taking photos, or recording other data, you might want to take a separate USB power bank anyway, but at least the DJI adapter will let you use all the juice in your flight batteries. The DJI carrying case seems a little too tight to me, especially for traveling by plane or car, where something might bump or press on the case. I bought a zippered suitcase-like carrying case by a company that starts with "Dou" that adds a tolerable bit of bulk but a lot of protection. ... show more

  • Stop Thinking About it, Buy It!
Style: Pro Configuration: Base
I did a lot of research and watched many YouTube videos about the different drone options currently on the market: Mavic Pro, Phantom 4, Spark, GoPro Karma, etc. The Mavic Pro is by far the most well rounded, take anywhere drone. It is small enough that you almost forget you have a drone with you but large enough to handle a good amount of wind. The camera isn't the best but has some really great qualities that coupled with the portability make it the go to platform for everyday use. The controller is very compact but allows you to mount a variety of devices. I primarily use an iPhone 7 but have been able to snuggly fit an iPad Mini! The controller has a digital display that reports pertinent flight information to include speed, distance, height and more. The Dji Go 4 App is awesome and displays all other information to include battery life, flight mode, signal strength, satellites, etc. The app allows you to change settings on the fly and displays the image seen from the on board camera. The controller has several customizable buttons which make set up easy and to your liking. The app allows for touch screen operation of all settings obtainable through the display. The flight of the Mavic Pro is so simple and can be set up with very strict or lax limitations. You can cause the drone to feel very numb on the sticks or insanely aggressive. So many sensors keep the drone stable and in control, wind velocity is tracked via onboard sensors and will notify you if conditions are too bad to fly. The Mavic auto levels once the sticks are returned to neutral and the satellite connections keep it locked in a hover. Auto land is dead on as long as the precision take off function is done. It has always landed within inches of the take off spot. Don't get me wrong, you can absolutely crash this thing (flying sideways and backwards mainly) but you have to try pretty hard. The 3-Axis gimbal for the camera creates super stable images regardless of how aggressive the Mavic is flown. Becoming smooth on the sticks in conjunction with the gimbal makes for an incredible video recording platform! The app is also excellent post flight. It has a built in video editor where you can clip from the original recording to make your own compilation video. You are able to mute audio and add pre-installed music. The app also makes a quick 30 second edit automatically! It is slick. Speaking of videos, they are recorded to an on board Micro SD card, 16g included. The app also saves the video in cache which allows you to view the video in the app after the Mavic is shut down. From there you can edit and save to you local memory where it becomes available in your photos! Overall, I am very impressed with the Mavic Pro and highly recommend it. I am pretty experienced in flying RC Helicopters, Quads, and planes so it came easy to me however I believe the Mavic Pro has all the tools to get anyone off the ground safely! It will baby step you to becoming an experienced pilot! So awesome! ... show more
