  • A monster for it's price!
I've been playing for now over 50 years. At first there were less than a dozen pedals made when I started, but now? Thousands right? Ok, Among the many distortion pedals around, the Digitech Hot Head is often overlooked. That's a shame as it has good drive from a light crunch to near all out metal punch. The Low and High EQ make this unit a winner. Like the Digitech Bad Monkey, the two EQ's are interactive with the gain and allows the unit to really get huge if you want it to and not loose either the low or high as you boost the other. With either tube or SS amps it reacts well to the instrument and colors little if you stay within reason on the EQ. Now what impressed me the most is how well it creates depth in the tone and drive. I mean it will go so deep with the bottom end that it can make a 5W 8" tube amp sound like it's running through a big Marshall cab (only a lot more quiet of course). Remarkable. With larger amps it takes on what ever tone or drive you want. I've had dozens of dirt pedals over the years. The only ones that have stayed with me are a ProCo RAT and a Digitech Bad Monkey. Well, I believe that the Digitech Hot Head will be the third true keeper of this small group of trusted distortion pedals. This is a great pedal if you have a small amp that needs a bigger tone and punch. It make little amps sound bigger, and big amps sound better. I don't use an amp set with the OD already going and then add the pedal. I like to get all my distortion or overdrive with the pedal alone with the amp clean. Running many pedals this only makes sense as most already know. As a stand alone analog distortion unit the Hot Head is among the best I've heard in ages. Final note. The Digitech pedals almost all have a second output jack for a mixer or recording output. I tried this going direct from the pedal to the interface of my computer to the DAW program. Running just the pedal alone I was able to record directly, and with a genuine tone that impressed me to no end. Mixing in a touch of reverb from the DAW and upon playback it sounded as if there was a fine amp involved rather than just the pedal alone. Unbelievable as I never tried such a thing as I use amp/mike/mixer or preamp out/mixer into the recording medium of choice. So if one is looking for a distortion pedal that will out class many costing 2 or 3 times the cost of the Digitech Hot Head, then buy this one and be amazed. Or you can try to impress people and fool yourself and go buy a pedal that costs well over $200 and not get any better overall tone and drive. It's your choice. Mine? Simple. Digitech all the way. ... show more

  • Prayers Answered!!!
Sent from the heaven of digitech pedals. This affordable baby is a weapon...seriously, if i hit you on the head with this, you're out cold. Not just that it sounds beautiful, distortion just ripping through the airwaves as soon as you feel that click. For the poor guitarists who will still use this when they're successful pro's, and remember how it walked with them through the tough times too. I'm just a beginner so it's good enough for me and my light and occasionally heavy music. I'd advise you look through the other digitech distortion pedals in the same price range for more specific genre's, this is in my opinion is an all rounder. Buy it!!! ... show more

  • I don't like it live.
I bought the pedal to use 2-4 times a night to get over the top 80's hard rock/metal tones. This box sounded OK in the home studio but sounded awlful live at stage level. You have to crank the output all the way up to get back to unity gain. My guitar sounded like a highly compressed kazoo. Again it sounds OK at living room volume but not live used in conjunction with a Mesa Boogie DC-5 amp. ... show more

  • Decent introductory distortion pedal - like a modernized Boss DS-1
Let's be clear on one thing from the start of this review - I am reviewing the DigiTech Hot Head Distortion as a "budget" distortion pedal - not as a boutique pedal, a primary distortion pedal, or even something you would use in a live gig. As an entry-level distortion pedal for $50 or less (mine was $20 used on eBay), I give it 4 stars. The most obvious comparison for the Hot Head is the venerable Boss DS-1 Distortion. They share not only an orange metal casing, analog circuitry (according to DigiTech), and an affordable price tag, but also a similar tone as an end product. On the DS-1, that tone has been heavily criticized as being too "thin", "harsh", or "fizzy" sounding. While this is purely a matter of subjective preference, I did hear a lot of similarities in a side by side test with the Level and Gain set equally. The tone can get a bit muddy on the higher gain settings, and doesn't emphasize individual notes compared to better distortion pedals. The plus side of that tone is that you get a pretty wide range of gain settings, from just barely distorted all the way to a super-saturated, "grunge"-like sound. Of course, the pedal produces a lot of excess noise if you turn up the gain, but that's a typical problem for many distortion pedals (even some expensive ones), and an annoyance many novice players are forced to live with. One other common complaint that the Hot Head shares with the DS-1 is a somewhat low output (volume). Even with the level near 100%, the DS-1 might not get as loud as you'd like it to, and the Hot Head is not much louder. However, one important advantage the Hot Head has over the Boss DS-1 is the two-band equalizer, which allows you to add bass (or treble) without sacrificing the other. Assuming that many users of this pedal will plug it into smaller combo amps lacking in one of those two areas, this is a potentially BIG advantage. And much like the Hot Head's tube overdrive "cousin", the excellent DigiTech Bad Monkey, you really can fatten up your tone quite a bit with the bass control. The Boss DS-1 has been an industry classic since 1978 and is even used by some professional rock guitarists. But it also has an archaic tone knob that does little to tweak its sound, and a whole slew of other problems. Call me crazy, but if I had $50 and could only get one distortion pedal for small guitar amp, I think I might be better off with a DigiTech Hot Head. There may be other (and better) options at a similar price (check out the Joyo Ultimate Drive!), but the Hot Head is affordable, customizable, and ready to rock. ... show more
