  • Should've bought it long ago
Before you buy this, you need to figure out for what purpose you want to use it. This impact is not for every task, and you will need multiple impacts depending on your intended uses. I have 4 Dewalt impacts, from the big bad 1200 ft/lb beast all the way down to the 12V impact driver. My use...professional auto repair and these guns get used daily - All Day. This impact in particular I use for removing wheels mostly. I hate dragging around air hoses, especially for simple tasks like tire jobs and brake jobs etc. Talk about annoying to drag out an air hose for a tire rotation or brake inspection that pays next to nothing. It's the small things that add up to really annoy you throughout the day. This gun is plenty strong enough (with a 5aH battery) to remove lug nuts as long as they were not way over torqued by the last guy. Even over torqued nuts will usually come off, but with just a few more ugga duggas. This is not the end all be all impact to replace your favorite air powered impact, but it has a perfect place in my service cart for every day use. In fact this impact should prolong the life of my Ingersoll 2235 tiMax. Because now this is my go to for removing wheels. With the big 5aH battery attached, this thing weighs more than your average 1/2 inch air impact. But it weighs quite a bit less than the big boy Dewalt 1200 torque gun. That gun is too heavy and big for everyday use. It has its place but it is uncomfortable for heavy usage. This gun is not too heavy that it fatigues my wrists very quickly. Any impact will wear on you with extended use, but I can manage this one just fine. Quality is what you would expect from this line of Dewalt tools. Long lasting, good bang for buck, and good power levels. This 1/2 gun and my 3/8 version of this tool are my 2 favorite, and most used power tools. The 3/8 version is more compact and lighter, good for lots of scenarios. This 1/2 inch version comes in where the 3/8 doesn't have the umph to continue. This one works great with torque sticks, perfect for daily tire and wheel tasks. But like I said make sure you are getting this for the power levels it can handle. This is not a nut busting killer impact. It is a moderate in between gun to fill the void between puny and Thor. It has its place just as all tools do. One final thing..Plenty of people have various negative comments about the hog ring. It's really all about preference. I like it just fine. My only complaint would be that the ring wears out quite quickly, to the point where it won't hold sockets very well. I have been using the 3/8 version with hog ring for about a year or so, and it will barely hold a socket. So eh, something to consider. When new, they hold them well, in fact make it kind of hard to remove sockets, but they wear out quickly when used all day every day. Just my 2 cents. ... show more

  • Stout performance in a small package
I needed a 1/2" impact wrench for changing wheels & tires at the race track and for working on my cars in general. The DeWalt DCF894H fits the bill perfectly. When using the 5.0ah battery, it spins my 90ft.lb. lug nuts right off with no hesitation. Just straight off, immediately. The "Precision Wrench" setting is absolutely perfect for removing and installing lug nuts. When removing, it uses full power to get them moving, then slows down to prevent runoff. When installing, it zips them down quickly, then pauses when they have seated and then shortly resumes at full strength. I really like this feature because it allows me to get the lugs seated quickly, and then I can switch over to the torque wrench for final tightening. It really streamlines the process of removing and installing wheels. NOTE: I first tried using it with a fully charged 1.3ah battery, and the tool had noticeably less power compared to my 5.0ah battery. If you want to get the most from this impact, you have to use a larger battery. Most people think of larger batteries offering longer run-time, and while that is the primary benefit, larger batteries also influence the outright power. For a demonstration, see this video: https://youtu.be/6LaB7kGP4Vo Others reviewers here have complained about the hog ring making it difficult to get sockets on. I have not found this to be the case with mine, even when using brand new sockets. The hog ring allows sockets to snap on with an appropriate amount of effort, and they stay on. Zero complaints about the hog ring from me. I'm glad I chose it over the detent pin. To say that I am happy with the DCF894H is an understatement. It packs a very big punch in a very small package, and it does everything I ask of it when working on my cars. I had originally purchased the much larger and more powerful DCS899H, but returned it in favor of the smaller DCF894H. I don't regret that decision at all. This mid-range 1/2" impact is a rock star. ... show more

  • Will break free almost anything, excellent tool
I'm a mechanic at a dealership with years of experience. I have the larger version of this, which will break free any lug nut, and even most axle nuts, no problem, but it's heavy for constant daily use. I bought this hoping it would work for routine jobs (mostly lug nuts) so I wouldn't have to wield that monster so much. It's perfect for this use. It will take off pretty much any routine lug nut. The interesting this is it does struggle with some wheel locks. The extra wheel lock key on the end of the socket seems to lose just enough force so it can't overcome some of them. If you're at a dealership, working mostly newer vehicles, this thing will make your life a lot easier. If you're at a shop that deals with older cars in the rust belt states, it might not be as worthwhile. But overall this thing is light and plenty powerful enough, surprisingly so. But do get a 4AH battery as the manual recommends. I have lots of 2.0AH batteries, and they just don't last long enough, too much hassle. Don't get a monster 6AH or anything, as the weight will add so much to the tool it defeats the point to a lighter tool. The 4AH is the sweet spot with this tool. ... show more
