Description

The World Percussion USA brand 4" Natural Frog Guiro is better than other frog instruments because of the construction, finish, and sound. The standard Medium 4"x4" size creates a ribbit-like, croaking frog sound when played correctly. It also an alto-range pitch as a wood tone block. INSTRUCTIONS: Use the wood stick (included) to gently rake up the frogs back to create a lower- pitch cricket chirp. Or lightly tap the nose of the frog with a thick end of the striker to get a deep resonating note as a wood tone block. Store the striker in the frog's mouth. NOTE: This 4" size frog guiro is large enough to be safe for children and strong enough to hold up to the rough handling of children, but it is not a toy. Recommended age 12+.

My voice is VERY soft and when I have allergies it tends to disappear completely, so I was looking for a tool to get my students' attention in class after a paired or group activity. I did not want anything heavy since I want to be able to bring it with me easily, so its wooden material is perfect for my use! This is something I purchased because I thought it would be a cool musical imitation toy for our son to minimally work on some imitation targets. I haven't asked his music therapist how she feels about it yet in terms of his music therapy goals, because I ordered it after our last appointment, but I thought it would be cool because he would be able to feel the vibrations directly into his hand after he played it and it might have some usefulness there. Honestly, this thing is so super cute, I actually like it. And when I tested it out, it kind of sounded amphibious and part of me just fell a little bit in love with it :) My only word of caution is for those with sensory issues or respiratory sensitivities like asthma. It looks great, it sounds great. It smells like gasoline. So they used something petroleum based on this, and the fumes from those types of products can take a while to dissipate. I worked a little with our son with this tonight, and he didn't quite give me the potty scotty face, but I could tell he wasn't quite so sure how he felt about it. I am super happy because he tolerated the smell at least, there was definitely a time when he would not. And I think it *may* even discourage him from trying to chew on it. Maybe ;) But just a heads up in case you or your intended recipient has any troubles with stronger fumes. This is nearly as pungent as it is cute... ... show more

Purchased this as a gift for a four year old who loves Musikgarten class (which involves a lot of calm listening activities and instruments made of organic materials, such as wood). The frog is a little bigger than the palm of an adult's hand. It is solidly made, but not too heavy, There is no weird smell that others described from some of these frogs (other manufacturers?). The stick fits nicely in the frog's mouth. It would make a great decorative piece as well as instrument. What I like most about this is that it is subtle. Playing around with it produces a lot of great variations in sound. Running the stick from tail to head (not head to tail) produces the most tree frog-like sound, in my opinion. You can run it on the small spines for a quieter sound; the sound is more pronounced as the spines get larger. Also, you can of course tap the frog with the stick to produce a rhythm stick type of sound. The recipient was thrilled, the seven year old sibling wants to buy one, and the four year old also suggested getting one for a two year old cousin. For $6 and a few minutes of showing how to use it, why not? ... show more
