Top Amazon Reviews

  • Remarkably fine product. Even bought again. Fabulous sprouts.
Size: Deluxe Sprouter + Alfalfa Seeds
This review is on the model 1200 sprouter, recently purchased, and does not concern previous models. I tend to review items only when they are particularly good or when they should be avoided and this sprouter is definitely one of the best. My previous experience has been with jar-type sprouters, which we never seem to be able to keep going for long, primarily due to issues with rinsing, drainage and yield. We have now had a couple crops of bean-type sprouts and the results have been very, very good. Based on the images supplied in the instructions we used about 1/4 cup of mung beans or 3/8 cup of (somewhat larger) adzuki beans, soaked for about 5-6 hours and then distributed amongst the four growing compartments. I have to admit that the quantities quoted would represent a slightly liberal interpretation of the sample images as we felt they appeared to be a bit too sparse based on our previous sprout experience. We rinsed the sprouts twice a day with about 1-1/2 cups (350 ml) of cool (not cold) tap water, which is ultimately caught in the bottom container. The majority of the water seems to drain through the four sprouting compartments in a few minutes, providing a rinse. At first, we were concerned about rot due to the amount of water that appeared to be retained in the sprouting compartments, but the results proved our fears groundless. As the seeds began to sprout, we continued to feel that we hadn't used enough of them, but in the last twelve hour period on the fifth day we were rewarded with a lush, full crop of sprouts. They had reached our favorite stage in which the tips of the first green leaves are emerging. They were so delicious I barely had time to measure the yield before they were consumed by family members. Four circular growing trays filled half of a gallon freezer bag or about 2 liters. These are the best results I have ever obtained from any sprouting method, and it was also the easiest. We are sorry we ever went back to store-bought sprouts. In addressing the negative reviews, I have to say that we have not tried it with smaller seeds such as alfalfa but I will update the review once we do. For now, we are busy growing yummy bean sprouts and have ordered a second Deluxe Seed Sprouter. Other than that, if you experience poor results, you need to be looking somewhere else for the problem; it's not with this product. If I thought I had bad soak or rinse water, at most I might treat it by boiling. As a biologist, the notion of "sterilizing" your seeds with chemicals or even vinegar in order to "prevent rot" leaves me cold. We sprout in the kitchen which is a constant 70F without nighttime dips. It's placed against the wall near a window so it has light, but is not in direct sunlight at any time. Can't even begin to address the review(s) that talk about "soil". Finally, we bought it for less than $20 and felt the price was more than fair for what we received. ... show more

  • Simple, affordable way to have a continous supply of fresh, healthy sprouts.
Size: Deluxe Sprouter + Alfalfa Seeds
Works as advertised, simple way to have fresh sprouts every day. (Often called a "superfood", Broccoli is my choice, bought from Todd's Seeds.) The growing process is simple, it just requires paying attention:Water morning and evening (I fill via a 16oz/500ml water bottle, the exact amount needed). Plan ahead to start a new tray by soaking seeds for several hours. I usually have the 4 trays loaded, each a different day/stage of growth, and a tray's amount of seeds soaking. When I remove a batch of grown sprouts from a tray, I immediately put the soaked seeds in that empty tray and put it back in the trays stack. The way to have continuous sprouts is to do continuous growing. The only "hard" part is determining how many seeds to add to a tray, which is really a question of how many sprouted seeds can fit once they have grown. Too many and they crowd each other and get tangled, difficult to use; too few and it was a missed opportunity to grow more. Since this varies with the type/size of seed and resulting sprout, it is trial and error. But the pictures in the instructions are a good place to start. I use a 1/2 tsp 2.5ml measuring cup, rounded scoop, for a single tray of broccoli seeds, works for me. The only "pain" part is getting the seed husks off the grown sprouts, to avoid putting the husks into the salad or (for me) pasta or whatever. But some folks like the crunchy husks and/or don't mind or notice how they taste. I shake/pull off most husks by putting the sprouts into a small bowl of water. Shaking in the water knocks off half the husks. Brushing with my fingers removes most others. The rest, I eat. If sprouts are desired more-or-less daily, it's good to start a new tray every day, so each of the 4 trays is at a different growth level. When I empty a tray, I reload it right then, so I don't run out. But if 4 days of growth stages isn't enough (or two or more people want daily sprouts), buy more trays! PS: A 1 pound bag of seeds last quite a while. And, you don't have to buy a bag of seeds immediately, the 4-ray set included a starter pack of seeds (Alfalfa came with mine), helpful to learn how it works, and good eat too. ... show more

  • Bought mine in 2018 -- still going strong. Great sprouting tray system!
Size: Deluxe Sprouter + Alfalfa Seeds
I bought this set of stacking trays for growing sprouts in 2018. I've been using it consistently since then. It's important to follow the directions -- the user manual is a link on the product page. Water will not fully drain sometimes from the trays the first couple of days -- this is by design. Not a flaw!! Once the seeds start to sprout, the trays will fully drain. Also be sure to rotate trays, water a couple times a day, always drain the bottom reservoir before watering, and don't overcrowd seeds. Use exactly 2 cups of water when watering -- if you use too much water, it will leak all over. If instructions are followed, this tray system works like a dream. I have never had an issue with mold. Not once. If seeds get stuck in drain holes, a pin or toothpick and some running water takes care of it. Buy quality sprouting seed, and don't let your seed get too old. Soak seeds first, per instructions. Bad germination rates are not the fault of the trays -- old/low quality seed, not following instructions, etc. This tray system will sprout larger seeds and smaller -- I've tried many kinds over the years and never had an issue. Keep the trays clean, water frequently, and follow directions in the guide. I always rinse my sprouts in cold water once they are ready and store them in a ziploc or food container in the fridge with a damp paper towel. They keep up to 5 days. It's perfect -- harvest, refill trays, by the time I use up all the sprouts, I have new ones! I love mine! It is so easy to grow sprouts in this container. Comes with easy to understand directions and a small amount of seed to get started. Very simple to use. Easy to clean. Very very happy with purchase!!!! Worked perfectly for years!! ... show more
